Forget the urban farming, eggs, or fertilizer. I just want chickens because I think they hare hilarious animals and I feel they could bring me joy. I think clipping their wings however, is like declawing a cat. If they live outside, it shouldn't be done. It might be their only escape mechanism.
@Zecfackler: If you need a 'licensed contractor' to build your coop, you have NO business urban homesteading. That's just a Yuppie playing at farming.
Holy ****! $500! You got ripped. My chicks cost $2 eachx4, the materials for my coop and pen maybe $100, and that was 4 years ago, they have made back that and more. Good luck, and welcome to the urban farmstead community!
@SunEDragon to make your own coop if your clever is like freaking $25 for what she is doing she is just buying what looks nice and gets it bran new installed by licensed contractors. she probably had the coops sent to her already built.
Nice Rhode Island Reds I have a few. Mine free range as well. They nice brown eggs. I have Rhode Island Rooster now.
You got the hard part done, the eggs will come. you can encourage their laying by giving them 20% protien "Layer" feed. and placing an egg or light bulb in their usual nest so they will lay their next egg beside it. just be patient. You'll get plenty of eggs and Chicken feed co$t is just "chicken feed" ;)
@CaliforniaFarmGirl It depends on what time of the year it is :) even if they are younger then or older then 7 months they might not lay till the days are long enough mine didnt start laying till like near a year old because the days were not long enough in the winter time ( when they were the usual laying age)
Well looking at this setup, it was a pretty expensive choice. I set up our coop for much less. It is cheap if you don't have to have the chicken version of a luxury condo.
solidsnake311117, I have to say that You are acting like cutting feathers off the wing hurts the chicken... It does not and is not comparable to cutting off a person's hand... I am not sure where you are from but it sounds like you prefer animals to people and are off balance...
I used to own 3 chickens here in Seattle. It was a great experience and I enjoyed them, however, they would cluck and squawk really loudly at 6am on Saturday mornings. My yard isnt big, and I guarantee that every neighbor within a 100 foot radius could hear them 'cause I definitely could. Mice were attracted to their feed, so I had a colony of mice living nearby. I would totally get chickens again, but I would need to have a bigger yard and a better coop and run. Fresh eggs are v. rewarding

the one thing i didnt like about this video is when that woman cut off that chickens wing, so what if they wont be able to fly she should just leave them the way they are, how would that woman like it if a chicken would cut her hand off she wouldnt like it its like doing the same to a chicken, and its not FUNNY she should get that through her head
well look here buddy were i come from we don't do that to chickens we never did, you see chickens are like my brothers and sisters and i love them with all my heart so how bout we just put this all behind us and become friends or enemies im fine with either one answer me back
lol clipping the feathers from a chicken is more comparable to cutting a persons hair then their hand there are no nerves in the feathers and they will grow back after the chickens molt im pretty sure a persons hand has nerves and dos not grow back so think about youre comparisons next time
Hey there, it is expensive initially but when the initial expense is done it is the cost of the food. I think long term chickens can be economical especially if you are feeding them vegetables and scraps from the home and garden. Eggs can be sold to compensate for the food buying as well to reduce cost. It is also enjoyable to have an animal around as well other than the normal pets that so not provide an income. Just my thoughts on positives with raising chickens :).
I was just laughing out loud. Give yourself credit for doing something uncomfortable. I'm sure many people can relate. I wish I could raise some chickens here in Orlando. The City restricts backyard poultry.
she's right chickens are good to raise they bring joy and food, well cause they are food and not just the food but the joy too their entertaining and sometimes funny i raise chickens myself and to be honest im happy i have chickens you guys should raise chickens too, think about it.
I also wanted to compliment you on the setup you have. ITS REALLY NICE.(looks like you got what you paid for)
I would imagine this is a long term investment more than short term. Your going to have to work on that immediate gratification, good things come to those who have patience/perseverance. o_-

It is a year later, do you still have your chickens?
Any recent videos?
How many hens do you feel can live comfortably in your set-up?

Hey Einstein,
Clipping wings is a part of maintenance and grooming...It's like cutting your hair. Doh!
You'd think you'd do a little research next time, before you go posting a remark like that. It's only makes you look very ignorant

Plus nothing beats knowing that there's no hormones and chemicals in your eggs. Plus you chickens aren't bred in little boxes in a huge building.
