I have heard that Clear Channel is selling a lot of stations, but can't get rid of them in some cases. They just need to get the hell out of radio though, and should have years ago. Anyone know what station in Michigan they first bought? I noticed they had a lot of them in Detroit in 2001, but the first one I heard about them owning is WOOD in Grand Rapids.
As far as Pirate/Satelite stations go, they may or may not servive due to emerging content providers. It could be that radio as we know it maybe on the way out for good. All this talk about good or bad my be pointless in the end. Do you have the Bell Telephone that used to hang on your wall at home. Look around their gone having been replaced by cell phones. It can also be said that the transsiter radio from 1954 created pop music anyway. Maybe its the radio that killed off good music after all.
I seem to remember somewere that our musical prefrence is pretty much locked down by age sixteen. Now without sounding like a smarty pants, it seems that those of us that are music lovers develop our bias in our teens. So of course a lot of the "todays music sucks" talk is just bias. There is good music out there, you just have to dig deeper. Technology has opened the flood gates and loaded the bottom level with a massive amount of content, now the big stations need to narrow their focus more.
Simply put, music is only truely enjoyed by a minority of people. Yes everyone ( a few exceptions) can and do enjoy listening to music but those of us how truely seek out and explore our music, are fewer than the majority. So of course the invisable hand of the market place will guide buyers and sellers to the equilibruim but capitism and bad taste aren't the sole problem. Independent and college radio play great music in most styles. These types of media outlets don't rely on mass appeal.
back in the 70's and 80's the New Wave genre was the weaker musical content but that also had it's own mood within the tune,it sounded like some sort of chamber pop, didn't pay attention to it too much but that how things used to be working,as for nowadays, there is apsolutely no feeling and talent to be found within this product called "music".The new wavers actually used their own vocal abilities,if I'm not mistaken
Radio was never really that good. I hardly heard any of my favorite songs on the radio. Radio was always marginal because they needed to play all the predictable popular music. College radio was always better and still is. This whole oh radio has gotten so bad routine is bullshit. I think it always sucked. It always relied on the Common Denominator = Advertising. The stations will always need to make money because thats why they exist. It's a business! You think NPR would do it better?
@ajatco I agree with you on the main part.True that's the way they would survive but you know not because of the sake of multiplieing their resources but on a more derivative sense, the audience. If peaple wouldn't be that narrow minded, they'd stop playing the masses's little game.Obviously, greed has taken almost entirely everything over.who's all behind it,the NWO.unfortunately we don't have the power to influence anything but I believe there will be a time when drastic changes will accure

There was a focus group in the eighties that voted to change kraft cheesewhiz into kraft microwavalbe cheesewhiz. Kraft change all bottles you couldn't buy the orignal, yes it was hell. No one enjoyed it, kraft couldn't understand and they changed it back. What I'm saying the same people who enjoy microwavable anything enjoy crappy music, if they want a focus group for cheese find people who like to eat and if you a focus group for music find people who care about.it.
I don't even bother listening to mainstream radio. They play the same old formulaic songs all day long, the songs are censored and that's lame as hell. CDs/MP3 players are the way to go! At least I will have control over my music instead of sitting through 15 generic pop songs.
clear channel isnt even about music. i tried to take a radio add out for my band to advertise it and the guy will not contact me back about it. but they always stated for years they support the locals. now they tossed that idea out the window.
It's all about money. They only play popular songs to have higher ratings, the higher the ratings, the more expensive it is for business owners to promote products. The more money is generated, the more greedy Clear Channel gets. The more greedy Clear Channel gets, the more controlling they'll be over music that is played. The more control over music that's played, the more the radio station suck. The commercials you hear on radio are really fast talking. Because each second costs lots of money
I couldn't be HAPPIER about the Cancer that Clear Channel has growing in it's Devil INFESTED body myself. They sold 2 of their stations in L.A. as well!
You guys have got to hear the song Top 40 Hit by Tsunami Bomb, a really good punk rock song about mainstream corporate music and the dumbification of America. 1:00-1:20 into the song is really true and completely hilarious, it had me cracking up. You can find it here on youtube. Tsunami Bomb - Top 40 Hit.
I think terrestrial radio will die in the next 10-20 years as the Internet becomes mainstream inside cars and people simply select satellite radio stations there. And I agree Top 40 has been dead for the past decade; the "good" songs often are big hits in other parts of the world but not in the US.
The reason why clear channel sux to you is because the ratings are through the roof and the subjects reflect the views of the majority and not the fringe. That is why they suck and most liberal stations do well right?
But the problem is they MADE the majority by not giving people the choice. ClearChannel is known for buying out faling radio stations. But the radio stations it buys don't fail because they suck. They fail because companies like ClearChannel buy rights to certain artists that ClearChannel has deemed "mainstream".
Only radio I ever listen are private internet radio stations. Only place where money is not important. I mean these playlist have only 1-100 listeners. You don't have to hear any gayboybands there.
Ironic that such a crappy band like DMB has the gall to appear in a movie about crappy music.
If he hates Clear Channel so much, why do I hear his awful music so much on 93.3 here in CO? He's got enough money and influence to have his music pulled off these CC stations.
LOL. WinchesterQDouche, not that I don't respect ur opinion, but why would any artist in their right mind choose 2 pull their music OUT of regular rotation?
That's my point. He's on a movie, complaining about Clear Channel, which is one of the ways people heard his music and bought his albums, and thus made him money, so why the fuck is he complaining about them? THEY MADE YOU MILLIONS! SHUT THE FUCK UP!
He's completely clueless about how radio and the music business work, I guess.
Well yeah, but at the same time he knows that 1) At any given moment they could pull the plug on him, and 2) He's probably taking up more 4 his artistic brethren. He knows it's not right 4 some of his friends in the industry 2 be struggling 2 get airtime and their work is so much better than what's being played.

Sorry Dave, your music, your fake singer voice, your violin and your gay black stagehand need to stop trying to be like the grateful dead or something. It's all lame shit, no metter how many Dave disciples try to force us to listen to it a "diferent way" or whatever. Erika your music sucks cocks too, a big bag of cocks, all fakers
Probably has 2 cover himself up because he's STILL working as an executive. Maybe some of the other things he says in the documentary aren't supposed 2 be talked about.
This is why I have the competance to actually look and research my own music, instead of having MTV and the radio brainwashing me what I want to like nd listen to. Clear Channel, major record labels, and payola are ruining music!
I don't listen to the radio besides news, and hardly watch tv. I was skeptical for years about being turned on to new music, but there ACTUALLY is some really good bands out there, just gotta keep going to shows, the chain effect will start, and you will find anything that fits your taste. Really people, dont give up on music :)
Mainstream radio plays the same 10-15 songs all day long. There is no variety, just the same old top 40 bullshit. This is reason #5800 why I don't like mainstream music.
This is why I am glad for my iPod. I have actual control over my music instead of listening to what the radio has to offer.
If you remember back in the 90s, the Hh stations and rock stations you would hear maybe close to 500 songs a day. Lots of Variety, the djs picked their own music or took request from consumers. Even TV, the Video Music Jukebox played a lot of videos (underground and Mianstream), they were bought out by CBS/MTV2 in the late 90s. MTV2 sux now, MTV and BET were bought out by Viacom, they hardly play videos now, when they do ists recycled JUNK. Everything is filtered in the mainstream, now.
As long as we don't go back to the days of soft angst/depressing late 90s dull rock that was on the radio that'd please me. It's one of the reasons I haven't listened to any rock stations that the FM radio provides in YEARS.
@khussett agreed. the 90's music was masterpieces i cannot name a bad song that came out in the 90's.and now the radio plays the same crappy today's music seven times in one day.
Totally agree. It's weird a song like "I Want It That Way" & "Hit Me Baby One More Time" are better songs than what Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, Jonas Brothers, Ke$ha, Will.I.Am. are singing today.. Today's songwriting & production are a disaster.
@khussett lmao dis is da truth!I have a old music vid tape wit some songs dat were shyt at da time but now lookin bak,I miss some of dem songs I considered 2 be shyt after hearin todays music lol
@rashadpwnzuall Yes but the dammage is done to the population already... people don't even explore music.... they will listen to the same few bands over and over and over.... even on their ipod.... music to most is simply like a confort food... it's like eating the same thing every second day.
Notice how most songs on the radio now are idiotic and brain dead anthems or dances. Think about it, hip hop is a powerful tool that can influence how you think and feel. The Golden Era of Hip Hop encouraged listeners to question authority and the state of the world. So it was followed by an assertive effort to dumb it down. Bill Clinton signed the 1996 Telecommunications Act which allowed the bigboys to buyup all the stations. Hence you have the same mind numbing programming nation wide.:)
It's as much about power & control as it is money. The whole world is being dumbed down & entire cultures are being homogenized. Evidenced by the economy, radio isn't the only evil empire .This is the new corporate communism. America manufactures more mental masturbation to numb the masses to spread throughout the world so (they) can have dominion over all. Will anybody dissent to stop it?..doubtful. If this country could sleep through eight years of Bush -- we are done.
WOW I hate Clear Channel. This is why music is degrading to the Jonas Brothers and stupid rap idiocy. Every stupid teenage fangirl that runs around listening only to Disney Channel-created songs screaming for Nick Jonas to marry them is a result of this. The scariest part is the comment about music for the masses. He is right. They are winning. But I won't give up. I don't need a station to tell me what music to like, I don't need to hear a song three million times to like it. Erykah Badu=Love.
Satallite radio is the way to go, only this time I wonder when Clear Channel will find some way to buy them out.
I can honestly say that The only time I hear the radio is when im changing CD's! It's really shame that no matter where you go the music is always the same.
Satellite radio has been sucking lately since the XM Sirius merger was approved by the FCC. The personalities on the music stations sucks and Howard is really loosing his touch since the move from regular radio. I listen to Live 365, MUCH cheaper than satellite radio!
thanks for posting this. I dj at a strip club now because I hate what radio has become. Clear Channel now owns my town. I worked at a rock station a while back and my PD wore a suit!
yeah, I was working at this "hip" rock station and I had to answer to come guy in a FUCKING SUIT!
the rushie neocons are sooo much like killers charlie manson and jefferie dahmer that i confuse the three ... it's sooo hard to relate to them ... one is making $400M ... such a guy would drive the largest hummer that you can imagine ... filling up its 100 gallon gasoline tanks twice a week then climbs into his personal 747 to get drugs ... scoffing at global warming ... insisting that burning 200 gigabarrels of oil every year does nothing to the environment ... and his minions eat it up
does anyone buy albums by mainstream artists? The only reason they get on billboard and stuff is because the record companies buy millions of their own albums to get on the charts. All the artists and record companies care about is money. Another reason why its so bad is cuz the song that has the best music video is popular. They suck live. You're supposed to play how you feel live(improv) Now 99% of mainstream artist don't improv. Almost all the good music nowadays is underground stuff
Lets just face reality. The majority of radio listeners (The Mainstream) have 0% taste in music because if that were not the case then we would hear more bands like Dream Theater, Pantera and Iced Earth on your local rock stations instead of shitty, no talent,no passion, overrated, overplayed bands like Linkin Park, Korn and All American Rejects. So it's not all of Clear Channels fault.
Pantera sux....... Dont care for Dream Theater ....and anyway some peoples taste isnt for the heavier version of rock anyway...so I'd rather listen to Korn and Linkin Park...screw AAR tho they suck too.
Your right peoples taste aren't usually for the heavier side of rock but all I am asking for is just a little bit of skill and heart in the music that gets played to death on mainstream radio. And Pantera does not suck retard.
Pan-fucking-tera does fucking suck you lint-licker....anyway yea I do agree with ya view on skill and heart that is something that is absent alot these days now...
haha man i hate all those bands but i would listen to Pantera over Linkin Park and Korn and fuking day. Pantera has some fat beats and riffs while Linkin Park makes some of the worst pussy rock music ive ever heard.
whatever band it maybe, most bands on the mainstream radio dont have heart in what they do cause its all about not having to go to a normal job.."if i can have someone else to write my riffs and i just gotta wank live and get paid fuck it"...thats why these bands are terrible
Take the most well known bands and play their top greatest hits over and over, for your demographic area. Throw in a crapload of commercials-Robot Radio!
Even though this documentary said that "people will tune off the station if songs aren't recognized", I used to frantically tune to frequencies for more serious reasons, because radio is just an utter teaser to get people to listen to lame shit!
Just remember that before Clear Channel become so rampant, Frank Zappa said the phrase "kill ugly radio".
Channel 955 (in Detroit) is a Clear Channel station. But before that, it used to play dance music (owing to the fact that dance used to be on the top 40).
Clear Channel also hires ACTORS to call into the shows they syndicate: Rush, Hannity, Michael Savage, Dave Ramsey, etc. Raw Story broke the news last year. Search it.

I was skeptical for years about being turned on to new music, but there ACTUALLY is some really good bands out there, just gotta keep going to shows, the chain effect will start, and you will find anything that fits your taste. Really people, dont give up on music :)

I don't touch the radio. Internet Radio and Ipod all the way, baby!
GDelva2003 2 years ago 3
Mainstream radio plays the same 10-15 songs all day long. There is no variety, just the same old top 40 bullshit. This is reason #5800 why I don't like mainstream music.
This is why I am glad for my iPod. I have actual control over my music instead of listening to what the radio has to offer.
rashadpwnzuall 2 years ago 28
If you remember back in the 90s, the Hh stations and rock stations you would hear maybe close to 500 songs a day. Lots of Variety, the djs picked their own music or took request from consumers. Even TV, the Video Music Jukebox played a lot of videos (underground and Mianstream), they were bought out by CBS/MTV2 in the late 90s. MTV2 sux now, MTV and BET were bought out by Viacom, they hardly play videos now, when they do ists recycled JUNK. Everything is filtered in the mainstream, now.

I wasn't old enough to have remember the 90s. I'm currently 15 years old.
rashadpwnzuall 2 years ago
I'm 16, and I still remember the 90s. The music industry sure as hell wasn't as corrupt back then.
Marlowann 2 years ago 9
There was shit music in the 90s; just the latter part of the decade (1997-99).
PeteGriffinPC 2 years ago 5
but even the shit music wasn't as bad as what's out today, today's music makes the 90's shit music sound like masterpieces

As long as we don't go back to the days of soft angst/depressing late 90s dull rock that was on the radio that'd please me. It's one of the reasons I haven't listened to any rock stations that the FM radio provides in YEARS.
PeteGriffinPC 2 years ago
@khussett
Yeah but 80's shit music is way worse then anyting we have today.
Elk4758 1 year ago
personally I'd listen to pre-21st century crap music than much of anything today
khussett 1 year ago
@khussett 90's music did have a lot of masterpieces
killwhitey88d 1 year ago
@killwhitey88d yea, there's very few of them today unfortunately
khussett 1 year ago
@khussett agreed. the 90's music was masterpieces i cannot name a bad song that came out in the 90's.and now the radio plays the same crappy today's music seven times in one day.
90zkid07 1 year ago 3
@khussett
Totally agree. It's weird a song like "I Want It That Way" & "Hit Me Baby One More Time" are better songs than what Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, Jonas Brothers, Ke$ha, Will.I.Am. are singing today.. Today's songwriting & production are a disaster.
blachubear 1 year ago 3
@khussett lmao dis is da truth!I have a old music vid tape wit some songs dat were shyt at da time but now lookin bak,I miss some of dem songs I considered 2 be shyt after hearin todays music lol
Netertaat 1 year ago
@khussett
So true.
I think it's because back then the people were not as desensialized as they are today.
But there is also a little bit of nostalgia, liking the old ones more than the new shit, which people hear on the radio nowadays^^

Erykah Badu=Love.
shark801 3 years ago 8
Satallite radio is the way to go, only this time I wonder when Clear Channel will find some way to buy them out.
I can honestly say that The only time I hear the radio is when im changing CD's! It's really shame that no matter where you go the music is always the same.
UserMaxius 3 years ago
Satellite radio has been sucking lately since the XM Sirius merger was approved by the FCC. The personalities on the music stations sucks and Howard is really loosing his touch since the move from regular radio. I listen to Live 365, MUCH cheaper than satellite radio!

satellite radio sux too

thanks for posting this. I dj at a strip club now because I hate what radio has become. Clear Channel now owns my town. I worked at a rock station a while back and my PD wore a suit!

the rushie neocons are sooo much like killers charlie manson and jefferie dahmer that i confuse the three ... it's sooo hard to relate to them ... one is making $400M ... such a guy would drive the largest hummer that you can imagine ... filling up its 100 gallon gasoline tanks twice a week then climbs into his personal 747 to get drugs ... scoffing at global warming ... insisting that burning 200 gigabarrels of oil every year does nothing to the environment ... and his minions eat it up

does anyone buy albums by mainstream artists? The only reason they get on billboard and stuff is because the record companies buy millions of their own albums to get on the charts. All the artists and record companies care about is money. Another reason why its so bad is cuz the song that has the best music video is popular. They suck live. You're supposed to play how you feel live(improv) Now 99% of mainstream artist don't improv. Almost all the good music nowadays is underground stuff
telecasterboy30 3 years ago 28
it's all about money these days... even more so than in the past
jonnystealth 4 years ago 9
Lets just face reality. The majority of radio listeners (The Mainstream) have 0% taste in music because if that were not the case then we would hear more bands like Dream Theater, Pantera and Iced Earth on your local rock stations instead of shitty, no talent,no passion, overrated, overplayed bands like Linkin Park, Korn and All American Rejects. So it's not all of Clear Channels fault.
cgvader 4 years ago 4
Pantera sux....... Dont care for Dream Theater ....and anyway some peoples taste isnt for the heavier version of rock anyway...so I'd rather listen to Korn and Linkin Park...screw AAR tho they suck too.
Chitenza 4 years ago
Your right peoples taste aren't usually for the heavier side of rock but all I am asking for is just a little bit of skill and heart in the music that gets played to death on mainstream radio. And Pantera does not suck retard.
cgvader 4 years ago
Pan-fucking-tera does fucking suck you lint-licker....anyway yea I do agree with ya view on skill and heart that is something that is absent alot these days now...
Chitenza 4 years ago
haha man i hate all those bands but i would listen to Pantera over Linkin Park and Korn and fuking day. Pantera has some fat beats and riffs while Linkin Park makes some of the worst pussy rock music ive ever heard.

whatever band it maybe, most bands on the mainstream radio dont have heart in what they do cause its all about not having to go to a normal job.."if i can have someone else to write my riffs and i just gotta wank live and get paid fuck it"...thats why these bands are terrible

anyway,
Even though this documentary said that "people will tune off the station if songs aren't recognized", I used to frantically tune to frequencies for more serious reasons, because radio is just an utter teaser to get people to listen to lame shit!
So, just use an MP3 player from now on!

Just remember that before Clear Channel become so rampant, Frank Zappa said the phrase "kill ugly radio".
Channel 955 (in Detroit) is a Clear Channel station. But before that, it used to play dance music (owing to the fact that dance used to be on the top 40).
