  • 5 lives and free guys at 20k is sort of lame.

  • sorry fella you cant play, i can still quite easily clock the game (at ten million) with ease, on hard and no cheats like i used to in the early 80´s. they have put one in tottenham court rd arcade along with defender and stargate but the configurations are all wrong and unplayable. shame

  • @robotronking1 Bollox

  • @robotronking1 What an odd thing to brag about.

  • How do you get infinite lives you bastard

  • HAHA! i remember playing this back around 1980 or 1981?? @ the local 7-11

  • everyone that wants to play this game on an arcade cabinet should check out Aurcade(dot)com. there are 31 arcades with Robotron cabs in the US. 40 if you include the Robotron/Joust Williams multi-cabs

  • This is one game I craved long ago & even now.. 20 years later go looking for the excitement of this 'simple' arcade game!

  • save the last family

  • HELL YA MY FAVORITE GAME EVER THE REASON I MADE AN ARCADE MACHINE !

  • In 1982 when this 1st came out I hit over a million on it in the arcade we would hang at. I LOVED this game!

  • Awsome game it was even if they shared same sounds with defender

  • i want to play this game it look awesome !

  • I love how it sounds like dubstep :)

  • Roborton is an absolute classic in every sense of the word. This game was the absolute pinnacle of arcade gaming - not even it's cousins, Smash TV and Total Carnage could replicate the balls-to-the-wall action of Robotron: 2084.

I've seen people actually break joysticks from the insane intensity of this game. This game was one of the rare games that caused players to sweat profusely while playing.

  • @Diskoboy1974 - Ab-so-lutely! Years after I'd grown tired of the old arcade games Robotron is still a thrill. No patterns, no tricks, you are on your own! I love it.

  • @Diskoboy1974 nice work hitting a million. 540k is my high score on Xbox live arcade. 440k on MAME. 486K on PS2. 510K on arcade cabinet.

I've ben playing alot of twin stick shooters on 360

    Zombie Apocalypse

    Alien breed

    Smash TV

    Warhammer 40K: Kill team

    JoyJoy

Robotron is still the funnest because I can never beat it and it is always random. sometimes I set the difficulty to 10 for some real fun. The enemies and AI are perfect and it makes Robotron the fastest game and most challenging.

  • zapierdala ostro

  • Sorry on The Ps3 or 2 platform

  • If u simultaneously press select and L2, twice u can select game options to set difficulty level and # of men.

  • i love the sound when you beat the level bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb oht ee oht ee

  • I spent many of 25¢ pieces in the arcade back in the day on this game. I have the Williams Brother classic arcade hits that includes my favorite "ROBOTRON"

  • It feels like I'm back in the mall arcade in high school. Awesome!

  • Also my dad loves this game. This was his favorite when he was a kid.

  • This is gonna sound crazy, but I'm converting the sound of this video as we speak to use in a song.

  • Smash TVs great grandad, god bless Midway!!!

  • Keep Mikie alive on the Brain Wave without killing any Brains and they won't shoot at you you can pick up all the Mommies for loads of points

  • I NEED HELP! I got a Hotrod joystick that I got 15yrs ago but now no longer work. It is because of windows and I need a driver? I got it when I had windows me, i now have windows xp.

  • @mrmrwilliebear Announcing your 'greatness' will only make God laugh. I have been close to finding you, oh 'robotron king the best of the best' and have banded you when you were sleeping (or rather passed out) at the local Denny's in any suburb of your choice. Joking, friend. My local Frogger Champ ass is a bumping towards your record....but it may take a while. PS: My reference is to my cousins Frogger Champ Greatness.

  • @KnowImillian You are correct. I think it was a spacial thing. It would be awesome to see a summary of all the Robotron Masters and see what they are doing today.

  • gayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

  • I used to dream this game back in the day...

and i have a standup Robotron/Defender/Joust game... in my living room!

  • Robotron 2084 for N64 GG

  • This guy is careless. I used to be very good at this game.

  • @TheSmoonge Who cares! I was a PacMan, Gravitar and Defender demi-god and this game completely horrified me! I just witnessed the first two levels on your post (PS: Thank you for the post) and I am already freaked out! We didn't have this game in my small home town, but I would see Robotron and Stargate at W.E.M. (West Edmonton Mall) and would stall in my high tops. ha ha ha. Just writing this makes me smile. Thank you Robotron!

  • im 26 and i love this game i didnt play it in the arcade but on ps1with a greatest his disk. but it is one of the hardest games evar

  • Peace and God's Blessings to you and yours....And, just for those who don't know, 10,000,1061 comes out to 400 Free Men!!!!!! Not as impressive as mrmrwiliebear, but impressive indeed.....Peace

  • Re: mrmrwilliebear.....Your Robotron exploits and accomplishments are impressive indeed!!! I was known in the Arcades of the erstwhile 42st as "Don Robotron Master" I started playing it back in 1984, and by 1988 i had mastered it. My highest score was 10,000,000,1061, The hand and eye coordination it takes to play has to be seen to be believed. I'm from that era and a True Fan of Robotron.....They should bring it back every year in the arcades. "Where Then Can Love Be Found?" is my vid..Peace

  • @Poetiqmaster Its true. To play Robotron, you would have the coordination of a feverish drummer whilst playing a game of slow pitch long lob ping pong. Most gamers played Robotron walking in one direction and farting on a mini-trampoline.

I think I just found the secret!!!!! Play Defender whilst strapped into The Zipper at the amusement park and you will soon find yourself in the Robotron world.

  • It looks like a precursor for Smash TV

  • Addicting and hard game. I become a spazzz around the tree level. Always have and probably always will. Got it on Mame and it great . The arcade version had double joystick with balls on top and it was much easier to manuever. Great game. Try it using the keyboard keys and its really spastic. LOL

  • Robotron and Stargate had some of the best sound effects ever for a video game. The pins Black Knight and Sorcerer had similar sounds! Williams rocked.

  • john connor it is...................time

  • In 1984, I played Robotron 2084 for 4 1/2 hours before the folks at Putt-Putt Golf in Silver Spring, MD sent me home. Ahh..., those were the days, 25-cent entertainment.

  • i mastered this game..It was the best video game ever.... Would be on the game for about an hour with a quarter..the game flips after 9,999,999. then goes back to zero... so if i wanted be #1 on top scores i would have to terminate game early trying not to flip it...lol...Also after awhile the owner of the game at the corner store turned it way up and it was hard to get 1,000,000 ...wasnt making any money....lol

  • That was intense.

  • I wonder why (in the bonus screens) all the 'bad guys' look like n*ggers banging the humans, turning them bad, making it necessary for me to kill them in order to survive so I can advance to the next level of.......................oh I guess the creators just had some insight in the '80s into what our future in 'america' will become.

  • I love this game, can play it for hours.

  • I got an adrenaline rush just watching this.

  • i used to be a hiperadicted to this game i didnt even eat for keeping the money to play... woau those 1985 days

  • SAVE THE LAST HUMAN FAMILY!!!

  • I played the arcade version....saw the N64 version too. But....wouldn't it just completely rule to have this game done in High-Def as a Survival Horror Shooter (identical gameplay--just the trimmings of your usual zombie games)?

  • i think stagga played this aswell

  • These sound fx are what mr zomby uses to make basslines

  • @souq zomby scored the music to robotron

  • The sound effects alone in this vid is what would happen if Daft Punk and The Crystal Method had sex.

  • this game is beyond fun. The winning screen was always my favorite part. I tried so hard to win just to see the colors.

  • If you like this game and you own an xbox 360, do yourself a favor and buy I made a game with zombies in it. It's a lot like this, but it doesn't look like shit.

  • this game needs a 10 minute cut-scene at the beginning like Metal Gear, then it'd be a great gaem!

  • What game is better than ROBOTRON: 2084?! NONE!!!!!!

  • Coin op from HELL! I flipped this game twice. After 365 levels it started over from level 1. I had to get some random dude to play for me when i had to pee and when I came back he was all like "I am sorry, I died like 50 times" lol no big I said it took me 25 minutes to kill off the rest of my extra men and I still leveled up 10 times.

  • you have WAAAAY too many guys.

    you are in fact cheating.

  • reminds me of Super Stardust HD for the PS3

  • SAVE THE LAST HUMAN FAMILY!!!

  • Greatest Arcade Game Ever Made

  • sounds like dubstep

  • BEST GAME EVER! Also liked Galaga, Rally-X, Pac-Man, Elevator Action, Tron, Space Invaders, Asteroids, and Pinball. I remember growing up in Chicago these games were everywhere includeing Jewel/Osco. We use to help old ladies to there car for tips to play games all day. Id still like to buy one of these machines for my living room. Looks like they go for $1600-ISH.

  • @CLOBBERINTIME1 Wow. Perfect. That should be put on a T-Shirt.

  • Best game ever! I always wanted to open a pizza place with all the old school video games and pinball.

  • I played this game for over 12 hours on 1 quarter back in 1983. I simply walked away at closing time with hundreds of men saved up. I was only 13 and I think that day alone broke my addiction to video games because it became so obvious how much of your life you could waste playing them. It's still the best video game ever (although Tetris is awfully close.)

  • @jradawson you're so full of shit its hilarious

  • @polkafrenzy666

Obviously you have no idea about this game. There are hundreds of people that have done this. My score at that time wasn't even close to the all-time high scores.

    So fuck off.

  • @jradawson this makes geometry wars look like childs play

  • He dies magnificently! Just like ET! XD

  • Ahhh, those "free man" and "death" sounds....SO familiar with the Williams games! I loved this one and Defender.

  • My friend and I used to play this when I was in college and nobody ever even got 20% of our dual player score, we were and unbeatable team and then it dissapeard for those stupid profile fight games!

  • I think this guy hacked the game and has unlimited lives and shit.

Cause he can't play worth shit.

  • @metemi So according to your logic, going to service mode (or the options menu for Midway arcade treasures) and changing the difficulty and starting lives is hacking the game? Nobody can hack this game for shit if they wanted to, because the game is so damn awesome.

  • @Missingno3000 Yes it's my fave game ever. I was just pointing out that this guy is cheating. There are people who have mastered this game though, can play pretty much indefinitely without cheating. I'm not one of them though lol

  • ah the good old days when everyobody had the name LSD or POT

  • I don't care how good the graphics are on the "new" games, or that they have THX surround sound, or you can play eachother on the web... there has NEVER been another game, before or since that matches Robotron for pure intensity. You have to become the game to do well at it. No bushitting with your friends when you play, no distractions, it's THAT intense. This game will teach you how to NOT focus on your player and conentrate on the rest of the screen. 26yrs old and still the king !!

  • The arcade version of this game is fun but incredibly difficult. Some sadistic bastards who designed this one.

  • Trippin balls. I need to get some shrooms and play this.

  • this is the best ,,jc penney used to see a mini version with the same adult size feel

  • Paranoia, stress, confusion, frustration: few games could evoke such emotions like Robotron.

  • @mygoatisdead

Lol, I was hooked like that on Stargate at one point when I was about 12. Wasted soooo much money.

  • This game is on a massive acid trip.

  • Thank you, Eugene Jarvis, for the awesome madness that is Robotron 2084.

  • Yeah sure, I'll stop playing Robotron one day...when they pry my cold dead hands from the joysticks. - Eugene Jarvis, creator of Robotron.

  • :o juego al más puro estilo del polybius. Se ve genial

  • I remember Llamatron on my ST. I never played Robotron; it looks awesome. I'd be tempted to abandon the last human family though, they keep putting themselves in danger and it's just not worth saving them.

  • Whenever I visit Gameworks, I head for the small old school section over in a remote corner with Donkey Kong, Frogger & Pac Man. Today's kids are so impressed with the gee-whiz wam-bam interactive 3D graphics that they are cluless about true gameplay, like with Robotron. Anyone who thought Berzerk & Frenzy took mad skills needed to try this! Sweated my ass off and loved it

  • I think Smash TV was a very good upgrading of this classic.

  • Dis Game was it for me!!!

Machine tipping left and right as you struggle in da battle!

Pure sweat from head to toe after 2 hours pure HELL.

But I did master in the end though, as I did with Galaxians, Gorph, Battlezone.

Call of Duty, Medal of Honor, Crysis, Tom Clancy, GAW.

None of those games ever made me sweat like Robotron Did!

  • This game is fucking crazy. Can any, I mean ANYBODY remotely my age (I'm 38) not say this game was stress and adrenalin on a stick? I was a coin-op game madman, but I this game was out of this world. It was fun, but I was afraid of it lol

  • Right there with you. I'm also 38 and this game drove me bonkers. Truly kick ass, hard and fun. None of the current games I know of get even close. Those were the days...

  • @mygoatisdead

I too had a mind numbing fear of this game in the early 80s.... A dark smoky arcade... I always had to get my Tempest fix before i could face ....2 SEPERATE STICKS FOR CONTROLS!! ONE TO MOVE & ONE TO FIRE WTF !!!!!! BrrrRRRRRII BLENKBLENBBLENK BLENK.

  • @Uglimusashi You sir, are not alone.

  • This is my all time favourite game EVER. If Robotron was a drug, it would be high grade Crack Cocaine! I have yet to find another game that produces the same ultra-addictive adrenaline buzz.

I played this so much, I even played it in my sleep. Got it on MAME now. Yes, a MASTERPIECE.

  • @Jhalander if you wanna play something that is just as fun play "i made a game with zombies in it" its just like robotron

  • @Jhalander Robotron is the greatest game ever in the history of mankind! I'm glad to see others share my passion for this masterpiece

  • there has never been a game before or since that required ABSOLUTE focus in order to really succeed. You honestly have to become part of this game to play it well. ANY outside thoughts or distractions and you die.. bang bang bang... especially up around level 19, the second "grunt wave"... there's you, about 10 "hulks" and about 150 grunts... intense doesn't even begin to describe this game. I have one in the man cave downstairs :)

  • i have the standup game in my backyard used to play it when i was 5-7 my dad is THE BOMB at that game

  • OMG...this was my favourite game! We used to hang around at a convenience store, typically sitting on top of a big green electrical box...and go into the store, buy junk food, and play Robotron - every night for years...thanks for posting.

  • yah it's hard and all, but you still died in this video way too many times

  • you can order a nintendo 64 from amazon and the "greatest hits of midway, vol 1" and use two controllers in the first two ports and use the joysticks...totally the same game!!!

  • The best way to play this masterpiece is on M.A.M.E. with an X-Arcade dual joystick controller panel. Buying an actual Williams stand up machine is not worth the trouble you will always have with it. The hardware will cause you hours of grief.

  • holy shit! i used to LOVE this game! is it online anywhere?

  • Comment removed

  • Mega classic 80`s game,i have it on the ps2.listen to the sound at the end!! The dude you control always reminded me of Brains from thunderbirds! If you havent heard of this....PLAY IT!!!!!

  • The games from Williamson Electronics had, hands down, the best sound effects of all the 1980's Arcade Machines: Robotron, Defender, SINISTER. Bad arse...

  • I played this game as a teenager.. I'm now in my thirties and i just recently bought the game and sarted to play... cunt! motherfucker!... bullshit fucking things not fucking firing properly.. fuck this game... aahhh Just the way I remember playing it... I sold it not so long ago...

  • Ever notice how FUK always had the high score.

  • "Ever notice how FUK always had the high score. "

He must have toured the whole country. :-O

  • lmfao love dis game me n my sis is playin it rite now n shes kickn ass like usual

  • i love this game. well, actually i like all the Williams brand arcade games. defender, joust, & robotron. They all have great sound effects, great gameplay and they are all pretty challenging.

i cant find any arcade games like this but i play the Williams games on Xbox live quite a bit. they are more challenging and fun than 99%of the games made nowadays.

  • there are 250 different screens....i turned it over....then it went back to screen #1....i played for about 3 hours....died cause my eyes hurt and my hands were tired....

  • At a million points the game would turn over and you start at the beginning. This was as good as it gets and Id still be playing it today if I had one. Yes, I can turn it over.

  • This game accounts for a lot of my time as a teenager. I couldn't get into defender with all its many buttons but this one had just a couple of controls and was extremely addictive. I managed to spend an entire day (from when the arcade opened until it closed again in the evening) on a single game. Those were the days.

  • The sound effects are just amazing and measure up to anything

  • This is one of my fav video games from an era that was THE BEST time for video gaming.A lot of the games nowadays aren't a patch on this for addictiveness and full on pure gameplay. This is when arcades WERE arcades and shit i wish i could jump in the TARDIS and piss off back there LOL

  • I can't imagine how many quarters I dropped in this thing. This and defender. Good times.

  • I always wanted to be good at this game, but couldn't get into it. I was just average I guess.

  • Brings back memories. Where the heck can I get the old school arcade game. I used to kick butt but Gary Penza was Robotron Champ. Had to wait hours for him to finish one game! God Bless the Robotron!

  • I remember this game but my all time fav was called tempest.

  • This game had xlt special effects and sound.Sad to say its the only one I could not master grrr ! I mastered Missile Command,Defender and Star Castle. Good ol' days !!!! Drugs, sex and heavy metal,,and of course Arcades :)

  • The only way to play this game is on the ORIGINAL arcade...u cant duplicate the two independent joysticks on original version..

  • I think this game was the inspiration behind current gen "dual analog controllers"

which this works well with in MAME.

  • Brains!!!!

  • My favorite game of all time, and im 24, first played it in 96 and havent stopped since. Its just so intense

  • how com you got that many mans?

  • I'm sorry; but this guys sucks. I will eat you alive in this game. You should seriously read the manual on this game.

  • sinistar far more fucking annoying!!!

  • this dude who playing sucks, he is losing allllllll the humanoids, collecting them is the key...

  • I never played robotron before but it looks pretty nice. All that shooting and quick action makes it perferct game to play when you are drunk ;) I must try this one...

  • Wow, that looks pretty cool. I'm suprised that the old arcade machines could process that much crap on screen at once.

  • The arcade machines could only barely keep up and on busy screens sometimes they couldn't. That was one of the difficulties of playing the game, the animation would slow down and speed up and your man wouldn't be quite where you anticipated it to be, leading to deaths. i can see a few examples of that in the above game.

  • lol at dfelts2323, donkey kong on a Microsoft system.

  • It's the only system I got...

  • I've gone back to the coin-op classics. I download from xbox live marketplace.. This is a tuff game! I'm waiting for a Donkey Kong.

  • My dad and I use to play this when I was ten :) great great memories!! Brain wave was always our favorite :) Anyone know where I can download this game?

  • Now I know where Spheres of Chaos got inspiration besides Asteroids.

  • OMG, I remember playing this game for hours at Back Room Records. There was always a line for this game. I have been looking for this game for years. My girlfriend and I used to kick ass twenty three years ago. Robotron and Tempest rocked. Thanks for bringing back good memories:)

  • To me, this is the best example of a pure video gave ever made. No complicated rules or ridiculous 34-button joystick/buttom combinations to remember. No silly 4-minute film intros. Just two joysticks, your reflexes and still the hands-down BEST sound effects EVER. Kids nowadays should play this game and then see what they've been missing all these years.

  • The gameplay is insanely addictive and the sound effects rock

  • OMG! This is my all time favorate arcade game. I know many people who have spent a fortune on playing this game in a evening out. I placed my quarter in the machine at about 9:00 PM Friday evening, and I still had a full line, about 1,000 extra men when the bar owner unplugged the game on me at 5:00 AM, all on 1 single quarter. Greatest Game of ALL time. BTW, Who played in this video? I do over 10 million easily on my first man (well, used to, that was 25 + years ago.)

  • ummm looks like a faster version of Bezerk with a hint of SMASH TV

  • This was before Smash TV.

  • This game is awesome because it looks and sounds like it's broken and glitching out when its working just fine.

  • nice save at 45 secs

  • This must be Crimsonland's great great great grandpa.

  • In High School I spent enough quarters on this to almost cure the US subprime mortgage crisis. No other game then or since could get my pulse up like this game - it was shere intensity! Just watching this video reminded me of how much fun I used to have playing this. I gotta find a full sized version somehow.

  • Divorce your mind from conscious control. Feel, dont think. May the Force be with you. ;)

  • I know what you're saying. You have to force yourself to get into the zone and the best way to play is to forget playing. It's no longer about playing a video game; it's about controlling your mind while losing control of it. SAVE THE LAST HUMAN FAMILY!

  • crazy your good

  • It's like your stuck in a giant BLENDER!!!!!!!!

  • Such a great game. Played it for ever. So simple yet so tough. Never the same game twice either.....thanks for posting!

  • Obviously you've never played this game.......

  • Yeah, but crazier

  • infinite lives.... probably from a collection. But still its coo lo explore harder levels.

  • Hold the phone-- how did you start off with 7 lives?? No wonder you went so far; the game normally starts off with 3....

  • The game is so damn hard playing on Gamecube that it is only fair to start with 7 lives. Once I find a decent full size arcade version then I will really show you how 40 year olds play Robotron.

  • haha! Robotron is one classic arcade game where having a full-size cabinet and standard joysticks makes ALL the difference. It's nearly impossible to acheive the same accuracy and maneuverability with a modern "joystick".

  • @dmata10,

This is my favorite arcade game, and, on the right setting, I could play for hrs on one quarter. How did you do the video-capture to post on youtube?

  • @dmata10 so how they play it is by dieing repeatedly?

  • Brings back memories of my teenage years. I attained a high score of 25million.

  • Love this game, and indeed wrote my own version of it, that I haven't got round to completing - check my videos :)

Eugene Jarvis + his team are geniuses to fit all that into 64K, mark my words

  • The exact name is Robotron 2084.

  • I used to turn this game over.

If I wanted to record my high scores I had to sit there for 5 minutes intentionally killing my lives.

  • one of my favourite games of all time , shares 1'st place with Berzerk :3 , 2'd place is Blaster (also by william electronics) and 3'd is Defender (OFC also by william electronics) , simply because the sound and graphics fills me with nostalgia :D

  • Is that a bad graphics robot shooting lasers out of its face?

    That game is BADASS.

  • I know a guy named Robotron. He's got this game in his house. Big surprise.

  • Damn that's funny! Some people called me Hobotron 5 years ago because I wore ratty clothes and they couldn't understand this was the only game I played in aa pizza shop.

  • lol hahaha
