I never could make out that first line until I saw it in print. I can't tell you how many years I went around scratching my head and interpreting what he was saying.
i'm leaning towards pat boone. he hits some notes i don't expect from him,,,like a little more oomph instead of vanilla. they're both real similar, though.
Check the version of John Fogerty (on The Blue Ridge Rangers - Rides Again), it's far better than this one. Nevertheless the tune is great and catchy, keeps a-haunting my brain even in situations where this is not appropriate ....
Strange - I was listening to Pat Boone's version in my car this teatime. I think Pat has by far the better voice but JB does a good job here - tricky decison, indeed.
I like Pat Boone's version a little better But Johnnys isn't half bad.

Excellent version-but Pat Boone's is even better including the background music.

Of course, this version is better than Pat Boone's. Anything Johnny or Dorsey Burnette did was necessarily better Pat Boone's best effort.

Tricky decision.

Believe it or not, Johnny's unlit fishing boat was struck at a California lake in 1964 and he did indeed drown...
how strange...and sad, he was only 30.
great version...thanks for posting.

The sad irony did occur to me when I posted.

I remember reading about this in the newspaper when it happened. I was 12 years old at the time but I was a big fan of his. So sad!
