  • On ya OldFella... Great vid.. However I reckon the hardest part is getting the driveshaft out in the first place?

  • Thumbs up for Aussie mechanics

  • This guy is the man :D

  • Just saved me $150, thank you!

  • Thanks alot mate. Just did this job on my wifes car and your video was very helpful.

  • An instructional video without the bullshit. Good stuff

  • my cv joint has been broken for years... its been clicking like hell and iv just decided to ride it untill it locks up on me and kills me :). lol jk ... well... not really >_>... ill get it fixed some time... lol

  • good vid m8

  • (Australian accent) That's not a banding tool, this is a banding tool...

  • Buy a high quality reman instead saving you time.Chances dirt and garbage got in and ruined the joint

  • haha im doing this tomorrow and i know its not gona take me 3 mins and 27 seconds haha

  • I love how you Australian people talk. It's so cute!

  • where did u get that vice from?

  • My god!

I just got quoted $325 dollars for a boot job!

I know engines, non of this axle CV stuff.

How do i get the axle out of the engine?

  • If you mean how does it pop out the trans... Sometimes you gotta stick a long prybar between the housing and the cv and pop it out.

  • @Sirrom0206 you just remove the bolts on the strut arms, and unbolt the cv joint going into the tranny/diff. slide them out.

  • how many times you think he has done this? Awesome video

  • great job ,,,,,,i cant believe ,,,,in just 3 minutes and 26 second,,,,,,he did it ..thanx a lot

  • Brilliant job. Brilliant video. Top marks to all involved. I bent the shaft on my cv joint a while ago. Didn no it was possible but its causin my spindle to wobble along with the disk causin a very annoyin churp in the brakes even when i wasn applyin pressure to the brake peddle. Its a bigger job gettin to the cv joint than it is to replace it after followin your advice. Im only 23 so advice like that will stay with me forever. Crued but effective. Glad you could help. Thanks oldfella.

  • an axel on an atv is $300 boots are $20 so if theres no clicking replace the boot!

  • i like his voice.

  • well done !!!great video!! very helpful.. thanks!!!

  • DONT REPLACE JUST THE BOOT ALWAYS THE WHOLE AXLES THE CLICKING WILL STILL BE THERE

  • Thank you so much for people like you who can show us an honest way for those that are not in the know about mechanicals.I have booked my car in to get both the left and right cv boots and the cv joint to get fixed an was given a pricing of about $150-$200 get the boots and the joints fixed..You made it look so easy.I found your information really helpful...

  • Love the no nonsense video! Does not waste time with long boring talk and does the job fast. Saved me a lot of money. Thought I had to replace the whole axle, according to the other advice I was getting. I also though it would have been an extremely complex task that requires special tools and a lot of work, meaning high labour cost. This part was simple. The hardest part was really getting the axle out from the vehicle. Was able to do this myself and save cost on parts and labour. Thanks a lot!

  • Make sure that boot is noice and toight...

  • i went mudding today and snapped my u joint :(

  • lol at 0:56, look at all of those CV shafts

  • Comment removed

  • Great video aand extremely helpful...well done cobber!

  • great effin video. i have to do this to my car tomorrow!

  • Great video.

    No bullshit

  • Mechanics Freak out about these CV JOINT Jobs. One mechanic wanted me to buy the complete axle already assembled. Its tough to find reliable people like you tube. That vid was awesome. Toyota parts are INSANELY HIGH COST. MY outer joint started clicking. This is the 4th time IVE tried to put a universal joint on it. Once the joint gets greased, clicking goes away. I dont know why everyone says replacing the whole joint just cuz of clickig? I would rather rebuild the old axle any day.

  • I just had my CV Axles replaced with new ones in my 86 Toyota 4wd truck, I was told they are a sealed unit and incased with grease from the factory, as long as the boots remain intact, it does not need greasing right? There's no way to inject grease into them without taking the boot off, I was told they would last many many years if I stayed off rough terrain, I paid 370.00 labor to have the CV axles and inner/outer wheel bearings replaced , everyone else wanted between 550.00-to-700.00 labor

  • thank you very much, superb teaching well done indeed.

  • substancially - one of the best video on youtube.

  • great vid. extremely helpful.

  • what is the tool he use to tight the band call? can some one help

  • good video- no fluff. answered my problem. done. thanks

  • Would a failed CV Axel bushings cause front wheels to "shake" ????

it is very noticeable when making turns or trying to accelerate, the wheels just "shake" .. no loud noises though, so not bearings..

  • sounds like a bearing/ball joint/tie-rod problem the cv axel makes a clicking sound

  • Thanks very much for your quick and responsive reply

(I didn't know CV axle makes a clicking noise, so thanks for sharing).

The car is 2000 Chevy Impala 3.6L 248,000 KM.

Those cars seemed to be built NOT to last. The engine is leaking oil heavily from teh bottom. I was told by a mechanic is the crank shaft seal or whatever (something MAJOR and requires 1/2 engine rebuild).

Shouldn't the Impalas be durable? They are used as police cars and taxis, yet they are so horribly unreliable!!

  • If it is the crank seal then no way is it an engine rebuild, take of the harmonic balencer pulley the timing belt and then the crank sproket then take the seal out with a screwdriver covered in tape, the rear main seal you have to drop the trans. Those cars are the biggest hunks of crap ive ever seem the cops are always breaking down and having to go back to the crown vics that are in storage here.

  • Thanks again for the reply.

That doesn't sount too bad then, a lot more affordable!

Lastly, regarding a 2002 Alero (less reliable than the unreliable Impala!!!), it is burning coolant (no visible leaks anywhere but coolant keeps disappearing), and leaking oil from the top of the engine (along the sides, there is heavy leak).

Is it BOTH the intake manifold gasket AND the head gasket?

Apparently, GM has a recall on the head gaskets on this engine cuz it is made of plastic!

    The new kit is $200

  • Is the oil leaking from the valve cover? If so that's not a big deal, they would have to take the valve cover off anyway to fix the head gasket. If you had a leaking intake manifold I'd expect an eratic idle.

This is why GM is bankrupt.

  • yes or could be your stabilizer joint

  • Sometimes there is no point trying to fix GM Cars...

Their cars break down in a vicious cycle!

Fix this, and suddenly "that" breaks!

Thanks for your reply though.. Much appreciated..

  • I absolutely agree with you

  • Sounds like my Toyota hahah

  • Toyota should be a lot more reliable than GM

  • thank you for this video, this really helped a lot and made our day easier,we were able to remove that part off and easily slipped on the new boot, very big help with our jetta, no need for expensive tools.thanks again

  • State8citizen Toyotas and honda are ridicously hard to do.You are right this video does not apply to toyota or honda easiest to use a boot slider on hondas or toyota alternatively remove to drive take off the inner joint (way easier) and then slide on you new boot and replace inner joint.Pop it back in job done.

"UKJnr can you really just knock the joint off like that on any driveshaft?! "

After one year of waiting I will answer your question.

NO, at least not on the outer right of a Toyota Celica 1990-93. Haynes guide book (falsely labeled manual ) does not tell you this in fact they describe the methods given in this video stressing on accuracy and a brass punch. Toyota factory service manual says it cannot be done and I proved it very quickly.

    VIDEO LACKS VALUABLE INFORMATION!!

  • I beat the living hell out of it and nothing. Well there was something that came out of it I ruined a completly good cv joint.

  • so did i...i beat the crap out of it and after the third try the thing goes in the trash and i return my boot kit and just get the damn new cv shaft for 60 bucks.

  • HELP!!! I have to replace a CV shaft or half shaft on an 02 Impala plz message me with any advice. PLZ!

  • lovin the aussie accent, good on ya boys!

  • Good video and he was fast as well but the job is a bit more difficult if the shaft is still on the car as on front wheel drive cars there's often unequal length driveshafts with the longer shaft running in an intermediate bearing. Plus you could lose transmission oil if the shaft pops out as the cv joint is hammered in an attempt to split it from the shaft. Often the joint retaining circlip or simple spring clip will distort and won't snap back in place without causing damage to splines.

  • I use a 3-arm pulley to get the CV joint out. I believe that method prevents the shaft from popping out as the central spine pushes the shaft inward while the arms pull the joint out at equal force. With this method there's no hammering and no problem in getting the shaft out if you're doing this with the shaft still connected to the car.

  • Depends how long the boots have been wide open to sand.

You would never pack grease over old contaminated grease.

If the joint is already noisy, then you need to replace entire shaft or outer CV joint. They run about 150 a side and you return old ones for core.

These joints are a precision fit device. Check them often.

  • pretty handy.. i need to replace cv boots an brake pads on my old corolla SR, i wonder if i can do this..

  • Fast that's not the way any mechanics do it, especially on the clock.

This guy was fast...only on YouTube;))

    How much would that cost?

What would a reasonable price be to replace a cv joint or two in a Ford Explorer?

  • more credit goes to the oldfella with the hammer than the mike

  • you an ozzie

  • Works ok if the shaft is out of the vehicle. However, if the other end is still attached to the transmission, I wouldn't try knocking the cv joint out. Best bet would be to leave the joint intact and use a fitting cone and lubricant as shown in other YouTube videos.

  • can you really just knock the joint off like that on any driveshaft?!

  • iv got a broken cv boots on both sides and there quoting me 300$ + labor costs is this over priced?

  • Sure is over priced. They'll be quoting on replacing the CV joints themselves not the boots only

  • they said it would cost less and be less work to just replace the entire Axel is that true?

  • If your joints and axles have no problem then why replace them. As you can see from the video its that easy. They are just trying to get extra money out of you.

  • ok thx you have been a big help

  • @Exotictuner i done all four of mine 60euro incl vat

  • Very good lesson and thank you very much. hope you can teach us more in the future.
