Australia is one of the few places, including parts of Europe, NZ, that are free from rabies in terrestrial animals. There have been some reported cases in bats. NZ and Scandinavia are completely free of the disease including bats.
So, its not 'rare'. its unheard of for rabies to be an issue is Australia, you get bit here, you're gonna be worried about the damn thing being poisonous, not so much diseased.

I lived in Arizona, up in a small mountain town, and we had an outbreak of rabies amongst the skunks and foxes once a year or so. Very odd. I think one year they raided an elementary school playground (the skunks) and might have bit some kid...I remember that no one could go out to play on their school grounds for quite awhile. They set out a bunch of traps, but not only did they catch skunks, but a bunch of other animals...it was an interesting summer that year >.<
