Just had this racket in mine and neighbouring gardens at about 1 am, it went on for over 25 minutes.
Quite blood curdling to hear that in the dead of night when you don't know what it is.
I had no idea they screamed like that or were so loud but the mystery was revealed when I finally caught a glimpse of it as it dashing through my fence before it disappeared.

They moved into our area a few months ago, and I wish they were gone. They've already killed one neighbors cat, and seriously maimed another. That cost them a lot of money for her surgery.

That sounds like an extremely upset young red fox who is in big trouble, probably calling his mother. Sounds like he's pretty desperate too. But, sometimes they do have a tendoncy to sound desperate when they are just searching. =) That's a pretty interesting catch. It's possible what that is actually a grey fox though, they sound sorta similar, but have that much gruffer tone. They also like to live in trees. =) They wont hurt you if you leave them be. They'd rather make scary sounds and flee.

True, calling a jack russell terrier a canine is far more accurate, but foxes are not like, say, hyenas who are constantly being thrown into the canine family despite the fact they are not related.

I heard a sound kind of like that last night. I was scared shitless and still kind of am because I never found out what it was. What I heard was more like an ongoing scream type thing, like something dying but it made a sound and then didn't for about an hour and then made a really long sound and then 15 minutes later did it again. So freaked out.

We have a fox living somewhere nearby our house, by we've never heard it scream that badly (it's done some loud noises, but nothing like that!)
Boy, foxes are some of the cutest canines going around, but some of their sounds really are unbelievable.

there are species of owls and hawks that scream kinda like this during mating season cause it does seem to come from the trees

@Yes it is. I heard it last night and it freaked me out. I thought it was my ferrets crying until I looked out my window. There was a red fow sitting infront of my driveway. And when My dog saw it and barked, the fox limped away. It was hurt!!

It's a territorial call from a male fox, OR,
If it's a female, then she has kits and she's warning others away as well.
During July... it'd be a mother with kits most likely. Or it's mate sending out a warning call to other males.
I think the call is really neat, we usually don't hear foxes in my area since the police shoot them on site basically =3=

We have one right now. We heard last night and it scared the bajeebies out of us. Then I actually heard it tonight (same time as last night, 10pm) and I went on a hunt for the sound. And found it. I want to see the fox, but it's still creepy.

exactly, the window to my room is wide open and i wake up to a screaming sound every other night. i came across this because it just happened and my cat was scared to death on the deck. its really creepy and chilling when its pitch black.

Ugh, when you first hear that noise not knowing what it is, it scares the hell out of you. Worst, this is a mating call. So I had 2 or three foxes screaming in the hills. It was dusk, so it was even creepier. I was only a year later that I discovered what had scared me that night :)
