I followed these instructions and my phone worked for 4 months. The first of August motorola downloaded new software for the atrix. Since the download, I get an error message saying, account not set up.

Couldn't believe it until I took my laptop and drove away from the house and tried. It actually works. At first it didn't but you have to check each and every setting. I put an @ symbol instead of a period. It's half the speed of broadband but it's free tethering to share. Thanks MobileTechvideos. Great job! P.S. You don't have to ROOT your phone either. I was gonna do that but got this method to work. One mistake while ROOTING and bye bye phone. You'll have an $800 paperweight.

@anonymousaccount: It seems you do not have the updated Gingerbread update as the rest of us. According to the reflected version on your screen via ingur.com/a/3ZzVW, that is the older version and yes what you are giving works for that version. The new version changes the tool bar color. All of the settings are the same it seems. Is your APN set as wap.cingular? If so, and if there are no other settings differences, what you are doing is totally void here. Thanks but real results please!

"APN Type" needs to have "tether". I have copied original string from my regular connection and added ",thether" at the end.

After you modify "APN Type" make sure to press options button and select "Save". Going back does not automatically save your new settings. Also, make sure you select your newly created access point by selecting circle/dot on the right (in the APN list)

Also noticed that when I set up the apn that it defaults to: AT&T US HSDPA, no matter what I do.

One more wrinkle that wasn't there before is something called and APN protocol, has codes that cannot be deleted.

My phone just downloaded an update and now the hotspot feature has changed. It's not allowing me to make my phone a hotspot anymore. And when I try to change it....the function says "TETHERING AND HOTSPOT"....instead of just hotspot. Any advice on how to change it to where I can get it free again? APN type needs to be changed. It no longer works with blank/default value. It needs to have at least "tether" in it. I put value "default,agps,fota,supl,tether­", and it finally "validated" my account.

I'm having a problem with this. I followed all the steps but when I go to enable Wi-Fi hotspot it is greyed out and will not change. Is this because I have it tethered to my laptop by a USB cable or for some other reason? I have made no other changes aside from what the steps said to do.

Thank you man. it works just fine. I will save 20 bucks a month for NOT getting mobile hotspot from att, and another 25 bucks for my ipad data plan. thats 45 bucks a month. and on top of that, i have had a 30 dollar unlimited plan on my line, so that makes my ipad run on unlimited data plan!!!!

This doesn't work anymore. Motorola pushed out an update that fixed this and prevents you from doing any free tethering anymore. Nobody has a workaround that I know of.

I rooted mine and it can access mobile hot spots without any of these steps. just click mobile hot spot and create a name and password and click save and then just connect your laptop like any wireless network. if want to root yours just google one click, motorola atrix and follow the steps

Help!! i puchased atrix from radio shack (full price). i want to test out this phone within the 30 days window. However, I'm unable to go on the internet. The message I'm getting is "SIM card removed or changed. Log in to your Motoblur account to unlock"?

I didn't have a problem with HTC inspired and was able to test , go online with no problem. It didn't ask for a sim card.

UPDATE: It forever(3minutes or so) for it to "set up data link", but it eventually worked. Infact I went to switch back to my factory APN, but the second I clicked on my original APN, my hotspot turned blue and connected...... I don't know if it just took forever, or if me clicking on my original APN had something to do with it? I am know using the New APN shown here in the video and it is working great. Thanks! QUESTION: can AT&T see this in anyway?

One note on this though: I then rebooted and tried it again, and I found that I had to go through the selecting and re-selecting thing again. Anyway, thanks you guys!

It works with HD dock and NOT laptop dock. Also if you have a wifi connection at your home of office the HD dock it will work WITHOUT tethering.
