  • Im 22 yrz old and think Wigan is the best town in the world therez no place better, but like other people have said its going downhill, i mean look at the last 3 pictures of the building at the bottom of king street, first on looks new, second one looks clean and tidy, but then on the third u get the boarded up windows and messed up posters on the walls but worst of all is the CCTV cameras that are everywhere

  • @Meansnare .... BOLLOCKS is Wigan the best town ever my arse.

  • Wigan baths are no longer standing as shown at 2mins 45secs.

  • Ive lived all over the north west but always find myself back in wigan, this video has convinced me that i really dont want to live anywhere else,im a wiganer born and bred (Aspull) and proud of it.

  • Sad at how much history we have lost in Wigan.

Hate the fact we have these nice shiny new building yet the ones they have moved from are empty and eye sores (Police Station & Town Hall). & to make it worse we still have the monsters from the 70's, the Council building @ the bottom of King Street, the North Western Station & the Council building on Millgate.

& whilst I'm on the Grand Arcade when Makinson Arcade is empty...

  • I come from here, I love it

  • An amazing piece of work about an amazing little town. I now live in Crete but it ain't a patch of Wigan. Hopefully I will be back home soon...................

  • @nigelnw I feel like that sometimes, I say I need to get out of Wigan then when I`m out of town in Toddmorden, Leeds ect... I become proud of my lil town and can`t wait to return... no place like home!

  • @TrilogyofC This is so true.. I never thought I'd miss it, but as soon as you move away you realise theres no place like home! :)

  • Ah. I live in Mexico city now and I wish I was back in Wigan tonight, sinking a few in the John Bull and going for an Indian afterwards

  • @PlazaMoon im going to the john bull tonight for a few. its one of the oldest buildings in britain

  • I know. I first went there when I was 18 (20 yrs ago) I miss home so much at this time of year. Sink one for me mate!

  • you always know where home is, somethings never leave you mate once a wiganer always a wiganer

  • wigan town is a shithole , don't even deny it. Nothing against the people but every time i visit there the place looks like shit lol

  • @Freebird21x Don't visit then.

  • What a song to accompany those photographs! Now I'm all bleary eyed and emotional!!! Excellent.

  • i feel the same its a real shame that wigan council feels the need to change everything just to keep up with other towns and citys

  • I grew up in wigan from 1969 till the family left for Scotland in 1983. This brought back some memories. I loved Wigan and still do.

  • Could u tell me the tittle of the song? Its excellent!! Thanks!

  • It's Hine e Hine off Hayley Westenra's Pure album. :-)

  • Thanks very much... u are very kind!

  • Wigan is crap! I'm from Ashton in Makerfield, not too far away, but I never go to Wigan if I can avoid it. I much prefer other towns, like Warrington, St.Helens or Bolton. They have far more going for them.

  • Wigan is pretty crappy, you should know all about crap coming from that shithole `Ash-Vegas`,

Lets face it Ashton is one grade one shit-pit!

  • top video , but the wigan baths bit is annoying !!!! frigging imigrants !!!!!!!!!!! .

  • wigan rules wether old buildings are crushed or new ones are built, wigan owns! hey guys theres a water festival at scottmans flash on 7th august, everythings free!! free bbq, sailing, wind surfing, kayaking and other water sports. every1 welcome :)

  • very nostalgic.....quite moving...

  • Ashame to see some beautiful buildings disappear, and ashame I was born in the mid-80's, so I never got to see some of them :(

Too much glass and steel now, and ugly architecture :(

  • brilliant video really great but upsetting to see how things were especially the old town hall

  • nice vid mate

  • Great piece of nostalgia. I've lived abroad in one of the (so-called) 'richest' countries in the world for 22 years, but never a day goes by when I don't think of my roots in Wigan. Scruffy old northern town but I love it. Looking forward to coming home again soon.

  • Labour should be required to have a warning attached: "Towns that vote Labour die an early and painful death".

  • Does anyone remember gores.Dont think wigan has changed for the better.

  • Born n bred in Wigan - now fckd off to France. Pity there's no dates on the pics, when is then and when is now. Af fo' seh, like - still a shitole nthat

  • hey man home is where the heart is wouldnt change anything about wigan i love it through and through there is no place like it in the world and im proud to be from wigan

  • here here!

  • haha sik ive jus bin at bus station x

  • Can't help but think how much the town has gone downhill whilst trying to update itself. Everything now is plastic and tacky

  • excellent post. have you got any pics of the new arcade? (relax i dont mean the grand arcade i,m sure you know what i mean ;) ...)circa 1976 onwards. looking forward to your reply :}

  • really enjoyed this vid!

  • good pics

  • Would have been better to get the before and now pictures to match exactly... Good work though.

  • Gibber

  • that was great mate, from an old pie eater now livin' in north wales

  • Would love to know how you did this, its great!

  • It was a sh!t ole then and it's a sh!t ole now -- only it should be called Wig'danstki.

Like mi owd Grandpa sed "Th'i can't polish a turd"

  • aaah nostalgia! i was born and bred in Wigan(Pemberton to be precise)Have you any pics of Pemps or the beachcomber? lovely video.Great to see some of those old familiar sights.

  • i lived in whelley from birth to 1988 and moved on. the place as changed somewhat. Whenever I come back it feels very sad and not what it was. Can't wait to get away from the place when i come back. Im not dissing wigan but I don't like what it as become. too many skegs and scallies, druggies and immigrants. maybe it's just nostalgia but I recall rumbelows record shop - mooching around for 7''. I recall when the Pier was great as opposed to the sh*thole it is now.

  • Wonderful video and a great town built on the hard work of countless generations of Wiganers. The salt of the earth and deserving of far better than the likes of Jimmy O'Neill, Chippyfish, Clagfest and the scum who now seem to think they represent the area. Take it back Wiganers its yours.

  • Thank you very good indeed

  • Superb. So much history and good memories. Thank you for putting the video together, your work is very much appreciated.

  • soem of this video makes em really sad.

the council doesn't respect the cities heritage and culture enough.

too preoccupied with keeping the town 'up-to-date' by building new things, rather than looking after the odler more itneresting buildings.

im only 19 years old and i prefer the older buildings to places such as 'the grande arcade' anyday.

so much more interesting & beautiful.

  • you hit the nail on the head, im only 21 and i cant beleive how much we have lost just by making changes to try to keep up with other towns, people destroying beauty and culture because they want to line there pockets so sad whats happening to a town that is a part of me and most of our generation dont care its tragic

  • @xSkaLaurax Wigan council are not happy unless they are demolishing some building altering Wigans landscape and making it look like Beirut!

  • Great vid ov ma home town

  • Send this to the council, it would go way over their heads.

More logic in a game of lego.

  • wow you dont realise something has gone till its gone i was only thinking about kays military store the other day where i used to look in the window when i was going past on a Raleigh chopper in the mid - late 70`s

do you have any photos of kays it was quite a

big shop also anyone remember the old army base near maximes its now the car park

  • Excellent Video mate, can't wait for the next one!

  • All those beautiful buildings gone, how sad, fantastic video a real piece of local history.

  • What an excellent video, well done mate

  • How rich in its Victorian architecture it once looked, and how bleak it looks now in its plastic modernity!

    How sad!

  • Makes me weep,soppy sod.

  • Fantastic. Puts in to perspective the crappy town we live in now. Most of us look at the older photo's with great fondness.

  • Very very good
