I was just wondering is a headphone amp needed for these cans? For instance is the headphone amp used to obtain high SPL's or does it change the sonic qualities of the sound. I dont think I would be listening to very loud music to be honest (85dB max) and they would probably be plugged into an mbox for mixing purposes most of the time. Would an mbox suffice?
Deutschland - Ireland ----- China. I wish they'd all still be made in Germany, though I have to say Sennheisers mich products feel of better quality than akgs mich products. I love AKG but I wouldnt buy any more of their mich models after the k540s... pretty flimsy. My older k270s made in Austia were of much better build quality.
Seriously, why do the people in unboxing videos always talk about the packaging,"Oh, the box is a very nice box...doesn't feel cheap" ;P, watch any unboxing video, same shit. lol.
@sbutya Audio Technica ATH M-50's...BUT only if you're wanting to use them for studio referencing/mixing/recording. These are pretty much "flat" meaning they don't have any enhancements to make the bass or treble more pronounced. If you're looking for some headphones for like an ipod or pc then beats by Dre come with factory enhanced settings to make them sound okay. Sony, Sure, Sennheiser, Beyer's are good too. But as far as value & bang for your buck for studio production the Audio Tech m50...
I want to upgrade my beats by dr dre. i was looking at the Sennhieser HD598, and HD650. I am primarily going to listening to these on my iphone. Will i need an Amp to listen to them? any other help is appreciated.
@sbutya You might not need one for HD598, but you will definitely need an amp for HD650. These headphones aren't really suited for portable use, though, due to the open design.
@hikinguphigh give me a break, if you buy the beats you will be buying a $100 headphone for $300+ dollars. If you like being ripped off for poor quality products, buy the beats.
@AlteredVisionz ok that definatley put me of the beats lol. im in the uk so looking to spend around 300£ are these the best headphones for that price and can you name a few other models so i can have a compare and see what best suits me. i want something that has really good mids and highs but with a clean bass thats not to overpowering.
@hikinguphigh actually the hd 650;s right here do that perfectly. They have a detailed yet not harsh or sibilant high end, a LUSH and forward midrange that sounds beautiful for voices and percussion and guitars, and a strong and affirmative low frequency range for strong bass reproduction, although not overpowering, just enough to add a coloration of warmth. However, they also scale well with an amp, so buying an external headphone amp will make these headphones sound even better
@AlteredVisionz sorry to keep asking questions lol but i narrowed my choice down to these and the akg k702's have you had any expieriance with the phones if so what are they like. also can you reccomend a good amp that is around the £150 price range i think thats around 230$.
@hikinguphigh akg 701's and 702's are both sterile and cold headphones. They are very bright which simulates a lot of detail but are lacking in bass, literally to the point where you are wondering, wheres the bass? Most people who like the 701's are analytical listeners, because they have a wide sound stage and can pick apart detail. Mostly good for acoustic and soft jazz. Anything with a beat will sound poor. Little dot mk3 is a perfect amp. Join headfi and all your questions will be answered.
@AlteredVisionz would you say the hd650 are better for just all around good sounding music. and could you get a decent bass out of the 702 at all if i used a decent equalizer. thanks for the help
@hikinguphigh the mk 5 is a significant bit better, however you are going to pay for those improvements. The land of audiophilia is foundated on the theory of "diminishing returns" meaning you usually get the most for your money in low to mid-tier costing products, and then the improvements get smaller and smaller as the price gets bigger. The mk 4 might be something to check out, i think its just a slightly more refined and powerful mk3. Although, in cost to performance, i think the mk3 is fine
@AlteredVisionz i decided im going to get the hd650s and the little dot mk v reason being the cheapest price i can get the mk v is 220£ which is actually 9£ cheaper than what i can get the mk 3 for in the uk
@hikinguphigh nice set up indeed! the mk5 ought to be really nice, its actually a higher end amp then the mk3's and mk4's, although its solid state, not tubes, which is still awesome. You ought to really love that set up and the mk v will make your hd 650's sing!
@hikinguphigh tubes are rumored to give a more lush and warm midrange and work well with timbres of guitars and commonly choesn for open back headphones, SS amps are chosen for both open and closed but sound better for closed headphones, there really isnt a huge difference other than each amp has its own sound qualities, just like each headphone does

Count the clicks? Are you a bit blind, or just stupid? You can clearly see if one side is more extended than another, no need for numbering. Gawd you americans are no match for germans.
@MihaiLatYoutuba don't be so mean. He's just saying on his own opinion nothing else. If someone could see any marks or something less hassle than you check both extensions. He even said he'll count that's way easier than looking on both sides.
@DeathToTheseWalls They're not necessarily better, they're different. HD595 are very bright, airy and bass light, while HD650 are very dark, smooth, full, and bass heavy.
To make it more clear....lets say that HD595 sound feels like water, while HD650 sound feel like pudding. :P
I've heard some people say they are WAY better. I've heard some people say there is no difference. I have the HD595s and I think they leave something to be desired, even when amped with lossless input.
:) Im one of those people with "severe OCD" too...i watched this video just so I knew that everything that I got with my HD 650 was correct. It was. I also noticed how the foam in the upper compartment of the box doesn't fit flush, as does mine. May just trim it so it does. Yay perfection!
@cmtriplecageipod High quality headphones require a lot of power to be driven to their full potential. Furthermore, high quality files (at least FLAC or other lossless, but better yet FLAC in 24bit/192kHz is optimal) decoded through a high quality DAC (digital --> analog converter) and then sent through a high quality and powerful amp will lead to the best listening experience. These headphones are NOT made for iPod's, etc. They're made for the critical listener.
After a few days of burn-in, I like the sound it makes with my Lehmann Audio BCL amp. However, the headband is a bit too tight. Too much clamping pressure but the ear pads are soft and well padded enough to make it bearable. The sound is not as crisp as the HD800 and IMO it's a bit warm. Of the amps I've tried, the Lehmann BCL is neutral enough that the HD650 is not too warm sounding. I now wonder if the HD600 would suit my taste better since it has a flatter FQ response.
