Such a gracious and gentle man. Even when interviewers would ask damn awful questions he responded like a true gent. True what they say about the best die young. Much missed and loved.
I hardly recognized him :( And the ending makes me sad because we all know what really ended up happening. At least he was very optimistic until the end.
Even while he was sick, he was showing some humor probably to enlighten the seriousness of what he was going through. It's a shame he, and others who, died so young. But I'm sure he's continuing making people laugh in heaven. Rest In Peace Mr. Chapman, we miss you!

His optimism is incredibly admirable, and it was the very best attitude he could have with the situation. Think about it, you can either be optimistic and try your best no matter what, or you can just give up. This is true for anything in life, whether it is cancer or a mundane daily issue.
It's very sad ... I almost did not even know .. so bad that out of the burly, healthy people such a thin, almost powerless people ... it was very sad ...:((
@HTprods It's not so sad. It would have been sadder if he hadn't been happy and facing life with some amount of joy. He'd likely have lived just as long and been miserable for all of it. This way, phis family, his friends, everyone he worked and dealt with have wonderful memories and he had joy while he was here.
about 'two inches to the right' is really clever. It sums up a Python theme - getting cross about something that would be inconsequential to many. Also that , even when something seems perfect , it is not necessarily perfect to everyone. And that a seemingly minor individual requirement can actually require a huge difference. It epitomises the analytical comedy of Chapman. The Northern Playwright and Tinny Woody sketches are 2 of my favourites. He also did physical comedy e.g. the self wrestler.
weary traveller indeed who did not pause to think "Why the **** didn't they build the whole town two inches to the right?"
It sounds like an endearing tribute- about the architecture anyway - and it probably is but then you realise that there are no such words as 'pauntliness' or 'pauntley'. They sound real- they seem to suggest large and impressive - but he's made them up. And re-using the same adjectives also suggests that he's deliberately using guidebook cliches at that part. But the bit
The Pythons have spoken at length about their fond memories of Oxbridge. Chapman's quote stands out the most to me: 'Cambridge. a university town built in a featureless flat landscape - so featureless and flat you wonder why anyone chose it as a location for anything. The magnificence of St John's, the noteworthy splendour of Trinity, the sheer pauntliness of "The Backs"... and gazing at the magnificence , noteworthy , sheer splendour of the pauntley King's College Chapel, it would be a world
It's the oddest thing, even though he's so much older than I'm used to seeing him, he seems so young, in the way he speaks, both the words and the voice. Perhaps it's because he played so many pompous old farts on the show and here he's wide-eyed and frank. What a sweet guy...
"And then, throw the sticks away and play squash."
It is terrible that we lost this genius so young. His awkward constable contributions was the glue to the whole event. And in the Holy Grail when he was writing his penance on the wall I thought I would die of laughter. I am a better man for his work.
I'm not one who's prone to feeling many emotions, especially sadness, but I do get teary eyed watching this interview ... especially after watching a bunch of Monty Python shows before-hand, back when he was young and healthy.
Watch a Flying Circus episode and then watch this. It's very, very sad.
rip Graham , you are a great Englishman , laughing at ourselves is what made us the people we are , the rest of the world will never understand . god bless you .
I remember seeing this when it was first broadcast. I was devastated to learn of his death. It's frustrating to see the good ones die young, while the ones you'd rather see go in their stead just keep hanging on...
to get some bits and bobs in a well know health food shop of the time, i sat on a brick wall with a funny sort of maypole thing in the middle with coloured streamers and such, i just happened to look a bit closer at it as it was covered with the usual graffiti, phone numbers, business cards, man and a van etc: right in the middle of this someone had scratched in tiny letters............RIP Graham Chapman, I loved you...................... made me cry that did.
This is a simple thing really but one that has always stuck in my mind and i never really shared it with anyone, I was bought up on Python, the right age etc: knew most of the sketches and bantered them around with like minded friends like many of us, the morning Graham died i heard it on the radio shortly before going to London with my girlfriend (now wife) thought it very sad and it was on my mind on the way into town, went into Neal's Yard in Covent Garden and while waiting for my girlfriend
Remarkable person. I love Graham because he dares to be different and is very optimistic about it. R.I.P Graham. I regret not being born earlier to see you. :'(
Is it just me or all of you who watched the video are more interested in discussing his sex life, rather than mourn his loss? Our loss, in fact. I'll never forget him.
Don't forget he was also a raging alcoholic for many years John Cleese told of the story while they were getting Python going in the early years. He was a doctor and couldn't stand his job and turned to drinking to numb the pain. Also the smoking didn't help either!!!
@fairhillnorrie I believe you meant to spell `angel` unless you meant about having a nice shrubbery with a 90 degree `angle` cut down at that degree with a herring ^.^
I don't think he was that naive to think he's getting better nice and fast. He was a doctor, a proper one, and I bet he realized he couldn't fight the thing, but just didn't upset the others beforehand. I bet he wouldn't stand someone pitying him and all the people coming to his "deathbed" in tears.
A great man and a sad way to go... Graham Chapman is one of my life's inspirations. His attitude to homosexuality and his outlook on his addictions opened my eyes and made me realise that even being gay and alcoholic, it's possible to have a good life.
A combination of a very inspiring and a very sad piece of film: RIP Graham.
Having seen some of the daft comments from earlier years: Chapman died of pneumonia and haemorrhage associated with the spinal cancer that had spread from his original throat cancer. Graham himself rubbished the rumours that he had AIDS, and was annoyed that idiots at the time made the association gay + poorly = aids. RIP to a special man.
@EnragedPantoGoose I know, right? I mean, everything I've read pretty much sums it up as that Graham would have had no problem admitting he had AIDS if that is indeed what he had.
He sounds and looks kind of younger because he is so thin and worn... I hope if I'm ever a cancer patient that I will have the attitude he did, and not be the whinging nuisance I probably am now :)
@longfootbuddy Thing about Python was that it was best because of ALL its contributors ; Michael, John, Eric and the two Terrys all brought unique stuff to the table
It's sad to see him in that state, knowing how athletic he could be. Like when he wrestled with himself in 'Monty Python live at the Hollywood Bowl'. Truly amazing. RIP Graham.
Gorgeous person. Heartbreaking to say the least. Never a better King Arthur, ever.
One of the best scenes ever was in "The Holy Grail". After he chops the arms off the Black Knight and kneels to pray and give thanks to the Lord. Then comes the swift kick to the head from the undying adversary.
What a great guy he was, "eventually throw away walking sticks and play squash"! :)) It's like he's going to say - Stop this interview, I think it's silly! Get on with it... Get on with it! :)
He was so thin compared to interviews just a year or two before. Cancer is such a hideous thing. It's amazing and sad that here we are in the 21st century and there is still no cure for the common cold and cancer.
@pauswa1966 there are genetic cures we can splice into DNA... but religious greedy powerholders dont care about that... stem cells looked promiseing and conservatives in my country are still banning them with the conservative supreme court... this is so sad, he was REALLY optimistic :(... my dad also died of cancer... it time we quit mucking around and spent some real money on medical research
These amazing men changed my life as a child - they taught me as a child of the 70's that humor heals all wounds - my mother was dying from cancer back then and the only respite I had was losing myself during their shows - they lifted me from the abyss into the light of day - God Bless you Graham and I know that Heaven is so much more fun now that you have arrived....
''I'm never better!'' The irony is so saddening. Graham Chapman will always be one of comedy's worst tragedies, yet one of it's golden memories. Rest well King Arthur.
oh my god, that is so sad, especially when he is talking about walking and eventually throwing away his walking stick and going to play squash! we love you, graham! wow, im tearing up.. he was kinda beautiful in the mollusks live documentary sketch. RIP
GRAHAM: So I'z goes to Dinsdales and he said you'd been a bad boy Clemens and he rips me nostrils open and he saw me leg off and he pulled me liver out...And I say I'M NOT CLEMENS!? only you Gray...Only you :)
i see nothing sad here..he faced mortality with good humor and grace i just hope when its my time i can do the same. huzzah my friend i hope you are at peace
my mums friend was his god daughter and she gave me a signed pic of him and said that he was the funniest man and most loving beside his condition, i found it very sad that she said that he could not hug her anymore due to his illnes RIP Graham Chapman
i love graham chapman. he fooled everyone so his family could get the money from the interview, and then he died! a pure guinios.... why did you leave?
he could defenitely make some of the funniest facial expressions I've seen. he defenitely doesn't look like himself. terrible. I don't think I can finish this! He should be out there doing other things like the other pythons. I mean Jones writes, hosts and writes documenteries. Palin does travel showes etc., Cleese acts in films and not sure what Gilliam's up to, but geez! it isn't fair at all!
Another victim of the tobacco pushers and their ILLEGAL weapon of mass destruction. Those who still grow, manufacture, distribute and sell the tobacco drug should be prosecuted for murder and genocide of the human race!
I'd guess it's some kind of brace related to the loss of motor control and musculoskeletal stability that he experienced as a result of the spinal tumors. A relative of mine had a similar rig due to cancer complications.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@shivercanada chapman's cancer was actually brought on by HIV. He did not disclose this information till close to his death. It was not public knowledge till after his death.
@colbour This is typical anti-gay rubbish. Chapman was NOT HIV positive, did NOT have AIDS, and had remained with the same partner for twenty years. His cancer was caused by near-continuous pipe smoking. Really!!
@hardylane: though the idiot colbour above did say the stupidest bit of tripe i've seen on youtube lately (and that is something!), ummmmm.....did you read the python biography? yes, he was with sherlock for decades, but it wasn't precisely monogamous........ i think it was blind luck that he *didn't* get aids
That's true. Neither Graham nor David Sherlock were monogamous, if Graham's autobiography is true, and of course, the Python biography. Perhaps it was an open relationship. As long as both knew about it didn't seem to care, who are we to judge?
@hardylane No, not twenty years. He would frequently disappear with male companions, being hard to find again, and dated profusely during the BBC years
I guess that explains why his friends called him Gray. I was thinking, "How in the world do you get Gray out of Graham? That's just weird." But if it's actually pronounced "Grey-um" that makes more sense. As an American, I've always said "Gram."
Rest in peac.. nvm that, better come back ASAP and entertain us you TIT

And it's still a massive killer now. What are those bloomin scientists doing!? FInd a bloody cure! Don't mean to sound like I'm rushing you.

I love Gray to bits! He was my second favorite Python. I'm just shocked at how he doesn't really look like the Gray I know.

Listen; if you are a genius that I happen to be a fan of, DO NOT MAKE a "I'm getting better" interview on ET.
Ronnie James Dio did one just like this, and he's gone too. Don't jinx it, guys.

He was amazing and one of the best comedians in the world

he could defenitely make some of the funniest facial expressions I've seen. he defenitely doesn't look like himself.

My grandmother had breast cancer in her 40's or 50's. She is now alive at 92.

@timtak1 Rare and great that she is living. However, the survival rate for breast cancer has not changed since 1955.

This would be about six weeks before he died.

Can anyone tell me what that orange vest he's wearing is?
lisambofoh 1 year ago
@lisambofoh
I'd guess it's some kind of brace related to the loss of motor control and musculoskeletal stability that he experienced as a result of the spinal tumors. A relative of mine had a similar rig due to cancer complications.

Oh God, that optimism! He certainly is an embodiment of that Monty Python adage, 'Always Look at the Bright Side of Life'.

chapman died of complications brought on by advanced HIV. he felt it was better to keep the truth from the puiblic intill after his death

reminds me of what happened with Patrick Swayze, things looking better then gone.
Too bad e-cigarettes weren't invented then, he'd probably still be around. :(

@shivercanada chapman's cancer was actually brought on by HIV. He did not disclose this information till close to his death. It was not public knowledge till after his death.
colbour 1 year ago
@colbour Not true. He got cancer from smoking a pipe for over 20 years. He was never even tested for HIV.
lisambofoh 1 year ago 13
@lisambofoh smoking a pipe and drinking heavily. esophageal cancer is common among long time heavy drinkers
MagellansUnderwear 1 year ago
@colbour This is typical anti-gay rubbish. Chapman was NOT HIV positive, did NOT have AIDS, and had remained with the same partner for twenty years. His cancer was caused by near-continuous pipe smoking. Really!!
hardylane 1 year ago 15
@hardylane: though the idiot colbour above did say the stupidest bit of tripe i've seen on youtube lately (and that is something!), ummmmm.....did you read the python biography? yes, he was with sherlock for decades, but it wasn't precisely monogamous........ i think it was blind luck that he *didn't* get aids
vclchatte 1 year ago
That's true. Neither Graham nor David Sherlock were monogamous, if Graham's autobiography is true, and of course, the Python biography. Perhaps it was an open relationship. As long as both knew about it didn't seem to care, who are we to judge?
lisambofoh 1 year ago
@hardylane No, not twenty years. He would frequently disappear with male companions, being hard to find again, and dated profusely during the BBC years

Why do Americans say "Gram" instead of "Graham"? (In Canada it's Grey-um).
alukuhito 2 years ago
I guess that explains why his friends called him Gray. I was thinking, "How in the world do you get Gray out of Graham? That's just weird." But if it's actually pronounced "Grey-um" that makes more sense. As an American, I've always said "Gram."
