  • There will always be songs that bring you back to a certain time and many on this album do that for me every time I hear them. Such good times filled with the hope and possibility that come with the naiveté of being young. Now things are so hard, soulless and final. Compassion and good will come but once or twice a year. I wish I could have banked some of those days. I'd be a better man for it now.

  • does anybody remember seeing marjo gortner sing this on buddy ebson's tv detective show?

  • Can't hear it

  • Turn it up!

  • Ian has always hated people who label Aqualung a concept album.

    However, by definition,it is.

  • ADVERTS FUCK OFF

  • "As you lick the boots of death, borne out of fear........"

Sweeping comment on the human condition.

  • truly original artists

  • I dont know why this song is not as popular as the most popular songs of Tull. For me it's one of the best without any doubt, the chord sucesion is so beautiful...

  • I heard an interview once where Ian Anderson was asked to label Jethro Tull's music. He called it "Art Rock". And it is. Tull was not really interested in commercial success. They toured more than any band, and they did it to bring the music live to the people. It was about the music. And it might have been rock or folk, but who really cares? They had so many great songs!

  • when they sang // a million generations removed// You know the HUMAN CREATOR SYSTEM,and great grand parent numbers ,should prove a Prophet can make a gain.

  • um abraço a todos os que desfrutam da verdadeira música!

  • I've seen Tull well over 40 times--this was the very first song I ever saw them play...they opened with it on the 1975 Warchild tour show at the Oakland Coliseum. The show actually started with a string quartet and a Martin Barre guitar solo, but this was the first full song. And when Ian (literally) exploded out of nowhere on the first big downbeat of the uptempo section my jaw hit the floor, and it's been there ever since.

  • When Aqualung first came out it was released in UK before USA. I had to place an order to have one of the Brit LPs held for me about 10 miles from where I lived (in Chicago) coz I COULD NOT WAIT for the US release. Remember it well. And even that LP did indeed have this song recorded considerably less loud than the rest of the LP. I always felt it was no accident but a device to make me/the world move in closer to the speaker like: "listen up here, I'm going to tell you something important".

  • Ian Got It Right The Book Of Rules=Bullshit!

  • @vstar152004 I don't think that's what he's saying. I think he's saying that the church is bullshit, and he doesn't need their condescending asses. I'm pretty sure he's religious, but in his own way.

  • it was on purpose!!! its supposed to be played softly!

  • i seen tull front row in the early 70, and again in 80, going again in june 2011, god bless tull

  • the LP is in serious need of re-mixing / re-mastering. this is an amazing song

  • GREAT SONG,GREAT BAND,GREAT PICS!!!

  • I dont believe you, youve got the whole damn thing all wrong...

Ian Knew back in the seventies

... a masterwork, shivers down me backbone.

  • well Ian, who is that kind?

  • This song is fantastic, and pics are really nice. Thanks Aqualung71!

  • I'm almost certain, that if there is a god, this is one of her favourite songs.

  • @bobbie4 Her?

  • so i left there in the morning, with our god tucked underneath my arm, a half assed smile, and the book of rules.

really, so evocative of real life, it brings back the memory of watching the catholic kids headed off to school to learn the pollyanna view that would destroy so many of them in their latter lives. sooooo glad my parents decided not to raise me in that repressive and deceptive manner.

He's not the kind that you have to wind up, on sunday's......

  • You know, being a christian myself, I met some christians (including priests) that really scared me. It's sad if someone makes a picture of christianity based on such people.

Sunday masses are about something different than winding up God, but in various protestant churches and in Anglican church, their true meaning is repressed. I'm talking about Eucharist, wich is, as we catholics believe, turning bread and wine into Jesus Christ himself. Without it, mass turns just into a ritual and prayer.

  • a true forgotten gem..thanx aqua

  • This was a song that helped me keep my sanity as I was growing up. It reminded me I wasn't the only one in the world who felt as I did about the religion I was raised with. Being the only non-believer in a big christian family was not an easy thing. It was years before I developed the confidence that I wasn't the crazy one.

  • When I was young and they packed me off to school. How awesome Ian Andeson is. A flute? Really. A flute?

  • Zero Dislikes...Gotta Be a Hell of a Precious Vid !!!

    Dont think So Dudes !

  • A million thanks for the pictures

  • La escucho y no puedo dejar de ver a la pequeña Lulú en estampida con todos sus amiguitos de la escuela. Es una canción de niños.

  • I love Jethro Tull and his voice. Wind up reminds me When I was young.

    Sorry. My English. Im German

  • When I saw Tull in 75 they open the concert with this song and closed it with Locomotive Breath. One of the best concerts I ever saw.

  • This song and the album it comes from take me back and reminds me of a good friend, who is no longer with us. He LOVED this song, particularly the part towards the end where Ian sings "eecch!" after "they groomed me for success".

RIP Tom, your friends in Jefferson Park miss you.

  • great job

  • I was fortunate enough to see Tull in concert several times in the 70's and each concert seemed to just get better than the one before. Without a doubt, Ian Anderson was one of the top frontmen (and flute players) in rock n; roll. This song said more to me about God than so many chuch sermins ever had...no, he's not the kind you have to ''wind up'' on Sundays. Excellent song...thanks for posting it.

  • I love this song

Their half asses smiles and thier book of rules... oh my... such exubuarance in my soul.

  • vintage the best!

  • This song always reminds me of my chidhood school ! (St.Francis)

  • Always loved this song....

  • thay have played at least 5 times here in Chile, and

  • Thank you so much for this video. I will never forget seeing this band live 4 times during their progressive peak years. All at filled houses in the old Chicago Stadium. Wonderful concerts!

  • OMG....Thank you for this video........It is the best I have seen.....Tull got me to think, and if you REALLY listen the alll the lrycs.....well you would understand.......Peace all..............

  • One of my top ten albums!!!!

    Wore the record out!!!!

All songs are good if not Great!

"And have all the Bishops harmonize these lines......HA HA HA"

  • "He's not the kind you have to wind up on Sunday" I love this song along with about every other JT song. What can I say, but this is my favorite group of all time. Thanks JT.

  • One of the greatest rock bands of all time and certainly one that had a singular vision that in hindsight is even more remarkable today that it was 40 years ago. Brilliant lyricist, composer and master craftsman. Oh yes, and one of the most stunning performers and showmen to grace a stage! All hail the MIGHTY JETHRO TIULL!!! Now and forever!

  • 5:04 What other performer/lead singer sings like this: "I didn't mind, if they groomed me for success . . yech . ."

    Precious.

  • I like the angry bite in his voice on this album. I wish he did more of stuff with the short stacatto, and less vibratoed style that he does here.

  • I dont think he had the same voice... at all. Physically his voice was very different and this sound lasted a decade at best. I am not being critical but thats seems like the case exactly. I saw him at MSG in 78 and he was great..... but not the same tone or ability to duplicate that haunting, angry sound that was alive on Aqualung.

  • I saw Tull in 74 and they the opened with this song,. It one one of the the best cocerts I ever saw!

  • one of my favorite Tull tunes... thanks for posting

  • The original Jethro Tull taught that you should plant seed in good ground rather than scattering it - this is everyone who loves Jethro Tull's songs

  • is this track mysteriously quieter (overall level-wise) on the album for everyone or just me?

  • I'm not sure, it could be. Or maybe its just you.

  • @Aqualung71 yea no HISS... the remaster is SO MUCH BETER

  • @Aqualung71 Hey do you think you could upload all these images somewhere? For some reason i find it hard to find good tull images form back in the day.

  • yes. you have to turn the volume way way up to hear the beginning of the song.

  • @radishrose The beginning IS noticably quieter indeed, but it zooms right back at the 2 minute mark when the electric guitar kicks in. It just serves to create a greater contrast between the two bits, dynamics wise. It works, you push the volume in the start, and then it explodes just fine :)

    Kind regards,

    Rael

  • @radishrose At the start it's quieter but it gets louder.

  • @radishrose ,

Yes, I believe it is quieter.

  • @radishrose That's due to the remastering..You are not paranoid.LOL

  • @radishrose Nope.... it's quieter on both my LP and CD versions. It's always bugged the heck out of me!

  • @ukecycle I think they wanted to make it sound like it was coming out of a radio at the beginning of the song. That is what I think that is not what I know. You notice it gets louder thru the rest of the song?

  • @radishrose just at the beginning. i think it was meant to be this way.

  • @radishrose IT's the way they recorded the whole album. Some of their older albums were mastered poorly

  • @radishrose it is decidedly quieter. I don't know why. But its also quiet on the the 25th anniversary release as well...

  • @radishrose I know whenever I listen to Wind Up on the CD, I always have to turn the volume way up. haha, it's not so bad, though.

  • @radishrose It is for everyone.

  • @radishrose Odd you say that. I just DLed from iTunes and put on my iPod. Listening in on a recent trip I had to crank the iPod to hear the beautiful subteties of this song, one of the very best ever.

  • @radishrose Its true

  • Just sent it to you !!

  • Thanks!!

  • Bah Humbug !!

  • Thanks!

  • I was meaning the merry christmas bit, not the song ! But you've no doubt worked that out already...

Now did I ever send you that christmas punk song...?
