  • Can everybody STFU about anime? Yes, there are fantastic anime shows and movies, and I am a fan some some myself. However, while LastestUFOSightings worded it poorly, he/she may have on point that anime in some ways has eclipsed and blinded people to other countries that produce animation, like Russia. So please, just enjoy this short film.

  • I love how at 3:13 he puts the leaf down like, "Oh crap, soooorry." :D

  • one of my favourite when i was a child

  • I just love the music in this.

  • The owl kinda looks like one of my toy owls on my shelf :3

I like the artstyle. You don't see much stuff like this anymore...

  • Really nice work, and original atmosphere!

We can really feel the personality of the hedgehog, it's funny! Merci!

  • What a lovely story :)

  • The Horse is dead, the end!

  • @Zevyezda Why?

  • Book “Hedgehog in the Fog” in English and Russian is available at Norstein Collection at Amazon

    Great animation

  • This film is not based on a Russian fairytale but on a story by a wonderful Russian writer Sergey Kozlov. For those who are interested there is a Wiki article in Russian

  • @MsButterflyyyyyy

Yes, that's right. He also wrote books about the Lion-cub and the Turtle.

  • @MsButterflyyyyyy

that's right. Him fairytale is very touching. especially about bear and hedgehog, when little bear was die... hedgehog assuaged him and promised, than will be pour him and in spring he restore to life, like tree after winter...

    Best cartoon...

By the way, Hayao Myazaki likes this cartoon)

  • We all spend our lives in the fog searching for this horse (our hopes and dreams) but he only found fear and despair. But we should just let the river (life) carry us along. The thing in the pond represents the kind strangers in our lives who help us so much but remain anonymous. Even when the hedgehog is with his friend which cares about him so much, he cant stop thinking about the horse in the fog. The hedgehogs little adventure represents our lives. But then im only 16, wat do i know of life?

    Rest in peace...

  • This is amazing.

In spite of the fact that I saw many times, I didn't understand it completely. Anyway, I think It's MASTERPIECE.

  • And only as I reach 25, I FINALLY got enough brains to comprehend this toon. This is GENIOUS...I never saw it the way I saw it today, maybe I finally got what the real animation is about....

  • One episode of Smeshariki was made after this animation:

    /watch?v=QFsm6HLKr94&feature=related

  • This is what real animation is about, not the shit anime kids watch now-a-days

  • @LatestUFOSightings

Anime is also a work of art. There are anime out there that is great and deep and moving (and there're also some shit animes...) Of course there are few true masterpieces compared to the number of average or bad things in any sort of genre/media. But calling an entire genre "shit" is rather wrong.

Also, the difference between this and most anime is that this is like a short story and anime is like a novel (or a series of them). Different, but each with its own charm.

  • @anaelyssa Hahahahahaha, WORK OF ART = ANIME. Lol weeaboo fag detected, go eat some pocky fag.

  • @LatestUFOSightings Lol. Please call every single of Miyazaki's works total crap.

Then please insult 5cm per second.

Then I'll convince myself that you're an ingnorant idiot and stop talking to you.

  • @anaelyssa I don't know who that faggot is.

  • @LatestUFOSightings

And you did not know that Hayao Miyazaki practice at Mosfilm?

  • It really best cartoon film on the earth. In the childhood I always cried, when looked.

  • 5 great animated work beautiful vid ,,,thank ionesky for sharing ,,,

  • Rest in peace,

  • Absolutely Beautiful!!! Thank you for sharing this gem with us!!!!

  • It is a philosophical little tale. Don't you feel sometimes like a lost hedgehog wondering through fog? And then "Someone" helps you to find your way home, and you are happy to share a simple joy (like raspberry jam) with your best friend, who truly worries about you and needs you. It is touching, really. The author of this tale Serge Kozlov died today. Rest in peace.

  • love this video had to listen to it three times thanks bryanoverturf1 for the share

  • who knew id find such a beautiful little animation by watching Family Guy!

  • was there a reference to this in family guy or something? what episode, I don't remember :s

  • yea there was a small joke in an episode that aired like 2 weeks ago its on hulu i think

  • ah right, cool. can't get hulu in my country, but cheers anyway!

  • oh its actually here on youtube just look up family guy russian gag

  • haha quite an ambiguous reference, but I'm sure I'd find it hilarious if it surprised me mid-episode lol. cheers man!

  • beautiful!!! thanks for the subtitle

  • The thing I was most astonished by was the way Yuri Norstein was able to utilise water so well in this film! Simply breathtaking!

  • thats cool kinda didnt get it though??? you want to trip out though watch that boogie boogie hedge hog not thats some crazy schizer!

  • Gave me chills

  • - What a weirdo.

  • Well, to understand that cartoon you should feel it.

Don't try to understand it with your mind, but with your heart.

Sometimes i think this is the allegory of our life. We dwell in the fog, and sometimes find something beautiful or scary or find someone who help us.

Btw, I wonder what about that elephant there?

  • elephant is a symbol of wisdom, patience and strength... I think, that's a point

  • a great piece of art

  • Now I know where from did Staphen King take the inspiration for "The Mist" )))))

Music is great in fact !!!

  • Aaaa!! It's take away my brain! *WALL*

  • Aaaaa)))It's the best cartoon I've ever seen)Eveningmare in the fog)

  • I love 3:41 - 3:46!!!!!!!

  • 2003—Tokyo All time animation best 150 in Japan and Worldwide: Hedgehog in the Fog "№1 Animated film of all the time"

U can check it on wiki.

I dont know how but this cartoon has some magic power.

I guess it back us to the time when we were young and felt this world same independently of country

  • Thanks!

This film is very popular in Japan. They even have some toys of Hedgehog and Bear on Japanese Amazon website (but won't ship them elsewhere).

  • Yes, they won't, but I still managed to get one for my wife. :) She was happy. The "big" hedgehog toy is actually extremely cute.

  • We "felt this world the same" is so very true. Miyazaki films like "My Neighbor Totoro" make me feel that way too

  • No wonder that this cartoon is especially popular in Japan... :)

  • what do you mean by that....and by the way i live in japan...people don't know about this cartoon so much, saddd

  • thank you so much for the subbed version... it's really great to be able to share something like this with non-russian speaking folk..

  • My pleasure.

  • mind goes bang.

    so good

  • Good joke

  • This is beautiful, but I don't get the horse thing...

  • Za4etniy myl'tik :) ya gdet opisanie na nego nakopala... na 10 straniz. 4ego tam tolko nebilo :) mne o4 ponravilos' kogda ezik na pole sovy psihom obozval, eto bilo tak neoshidanno O_o

  • beyond beautiful..

  • what a great cartoon! and what a great dog for giving the jam back! greatest post ever!

  • man this is so beautiful...

  • The best cartoon i've seen ever

  • cute.

  • thank you for your work translating the ezik v tumane cartoon! I think you did a great job. Your choice of words really does convey the meaning very well. For example, I like that you chose "what a weirdo" and not "psycho" which would have been a direct translation, but really sounds a lot more harsh in english...

  • It was in fact not me; it was the translation of the official festival copy. :)

  • This was the official English translation, it was not done by me. :)

  • The English department showed this at an animation night we had at school, everybody loved it. ^^

  • This is my 1st time seeing this, I loved it! So dark & mysterious o.o

  • more than 6,000,000 European Jews was killed in WW2, about a million Russian Jews was Killed or displaced between WW1 and WW2. How many like the genius Yuri Norstein where among them?

  • yeah, very tragic. Americans arn´t allowed to speak like they know something about it though.

    becaus they don´t.

  • nu eto je prosto klass

  • I find the hedgehogs voice quite soothing for some reason.

  • Classic story from Russia with love. One of the best of mankind.

  • Very good, is there more stuff like this out there?

  • Sure. Watch Soyuzmultfilm. :)

  • The definitive creepy cartoon of my childhood; totally folklorised nowadays too.

"He sighed deeply" should be "he took as deep a breath as he could"

"said someone quietly" -> "someone said without sound"

  • it's not creepy, it's brilliant!!! how is it folklorised? there's nothing *russian* about it. Is folklorised a word?

btw, the way it's translated, maybe not perfectly, but still, is FINE."sighed deeply" sounds more compact and not as clumsy as "he took as deep a breath as he could". "said someone quietly serves here better than "said without sound." the latter is too complex and confusing. Maybe "said someone silently"?

THANK YOU SOYUZMULTFILM FOR SHARING IT WITH THE WORLD!

  • Of course, it's brilliant. Besides, it does creep children out, qed.

It's an idiomatically incorrect translation, so it's not all fine. My attempt sounds clumsy because I'm not a professional translator, but I just tried to give the actual meaning. Do you prefer characters in movies speak random stuff as long as it's compact? :D

Sorry, I didn't know "folklorised" was not a word :) I mean it has become folklore, in the sense that people quote the passages all over the place.

  • "Sighed deeply" would sound like becoming frustrated. Nothing similar in the original. The author uses four words, to essentially keep to the style that the hedgehog stays amusingly phlegmatic all the way, indifferent to danger.

Also in Russian "said quietly" would be shorter than "said without sound" - but it's the latter that is being narrated! Adding the uncanny, fantasizing how rich communication the animals possess.

  • yes, perhaps you're right. translating somebody's work isn't as easy as it seems. It got me thinking about how to translate it right, LOL. Can't get my mind off it! I'm not sure about it being creepy, when i was little it used to make me feel melancholic rather than "creeped out" (not a word either). Thanks for your reply! :)

  • soooo cute <3

  • takoi trogatelniy multik, pryam serdechko sjimayetsya kogda smotryu, very sincere and kind cartoon

  • Tenderly crafted. A delight.

  • ...If Chekhov was furry and left-handed. lol.

  • Shouldn't the last line be translated as: He thought about the horse, and how she was there, in the fog. My Russian isn't very strong so I'm not sure. Can anyone help me out?

  • no actually subtitles are totally correct in that line :))

  • Sorry matey, the final line's not correct in English, so it can't be correctly translated. As it's written without "", it must be reported thought, so HOW SHE IS, would have to be HOW SHE WAS (in keeping with the rules of reported language). If it's meant to be HOW SHE IS, then there should be "" around it.

  • Sorry matey, the English isn't correct so the translation can't be correct either. There are no "" around the final line, so it must be reported thought. HOW SHE IS would have to change to HOW SHE WAS in keeping with the rules of reported language. If it's meant to read HOW SHE IS, then there needs to be "".

  • Excellent job Yuriy Norshteyn! Such a fine piece of work.

  • its one of the most Beautiful pieces of film i have ever seen

  • Genial!

  • This is a greatest Russian multfilm! It is movie for all ages, the world has to see it!

  • Oh...how lovely was that..though sad.

    Thank you for uploading Souzmultfilm.

    Beautiful animation !
