I hate how British narrators are never able to correctly pronouciate Japanese. I mean seriously they put a lot of work into this, why not just say it correctly-.- ticks me off
my guess the reason they stopped at the gameboy was because by the 90's the gaming industry really started to become complicated with nec and especially sega being thrown into the mix as well as the flood of pc games that were introduced from then on. it was still interesting to see how the industry shaped up until that point though. i never knew that activision was born from ex atari employees and that the father of atari was practically ousted from the company due to indifference.
most of this documentary was very good but the final portion which involved the story of tetris is told in much more detail which was produced by the bbc which was also posted on youtube by mr gamedocumentaries (sorry, dont know what else to call you, :P). but as i said, the majority of this was very educational and i learned quite a bit about the origins of atari and activision. activision still being around today, it was interesting to see how they got their start. thanks for uploading this.
I have one question about these video game pioneers, why aren't they more talked about? I mean a lot of the video games people enjoy wouldn't be around without them. I guess it goes under the say that a lot of modern stuff could apply under, "People know about the inventions, yet they don't know about the inventor."
@GameMakerPrince I'm not a game developer; however, I enjoyed watching this documentary, too. It taught me a lot. I went here expecting to learn how a video game is made, but I received history on the Atari and Nintendo. And like I said earlier, I enjoyed it.
you don't get it, do you. the title is the name of the documentary. i didn't decide on it, but its creators and i won't change it just because there are people out there who can't distinguish between computer, video, pc and console games. just for you: console and pc games are all computer games! consoles are dedicated computers, hence their games are also computer games. if the title was the story of pc-games, then you'd have a point, but since it's not your complaint is just silly
@IRONMAIDENFAN2006: What about it is "missleading"? I clearly wrote what to expect: information about Atari and Nintendo. Consoles, by the way, ARE computers. Your distinct connotation of computer games and video games wasn't made in the time this documentary covers. Also, the name of the documentary is the story of "Computer Games" and changing a given title is out of the question. Oh and if you forgot, Tetris - which is also covered - started out on a computer...
British documentary that missed so much of TRUE gaming history - the computer games of the 80's and 90's, first on the Spectrum and Commodore 64/Atari 800, then the Amiga and Atari ST, and finally, in the latter half of the 90's - PC gaming. This is where the true innovation was made, this is where the genres were invented. Consoles were always copying this computer game idea's! In fact take out the 1 min spent on Spectrum games and this is the history of console gaming - not computer gaming!
it miss a few things , doesnt say the excact time line and most of all doesnt cover the "console war I & II " , its a prewar doc

We need to play video games? That might be a first for me to hear.

I wish they talked about Hiroji Kiyotake.
Poor guy got killed in a car accident the day he quit Nintendo.
He quit because he was ashamed of how horribly the Virtual Boy failed.
He created Wario and Samus, and he designed the GameBoy and Virtual Boy.
Great uploads by the way, I really enjoyed looking at this as I'm a game developer myself, though that's not rare to see at all these days.
I draw inspiration from the originals.
