  • I wish the Phenom II X3 were as stable as the X4 or the X2, but for some reason the even use more energy per clock than the X4.

  • AMD own intel and NVIDIA own ATI

  • HUMANS SUX!

  • 声音太小了.

  • AMD rules. get over it

  • A triple-core for a laptop would be nice. Phenom II x3 720 is the shit

  • hope to see a triple-core mobile processor.

  • Comment removed

  • They make it for Intel because the developers know that their game will get the most performance from them, not from AMD.

  • you say AMD sucks look at the benchmarks if you have not notice must games are opti for intel on all test opti AMD and AMD would smoke intel even More

  • Leslie is HOT!

  • You're stupid... CPU Q is no't about "shitty benchmarks" dumbass!!!

Intel has better performance, YES it's TRUE!

But Phenom 3x is nice price/value for average PC users!!!

  • Iam just fine with my AMD Athlon 64 1800 I got in '05.

  • Yea it also gives the same high thermals as a quad core. Why didn't they say that?

  • triple core my asss if 4 cores arnt that fast how come they make 3 fst this is all bullshit they just tryna say they r good and same thing to intel they both actually make shit stuff they slow down eachothers CPUs to show that its actually slow and show that thiers is fast

  • Intel for CPUS ATi for GPUS , 4870x2 <3!!!

  • amd z da best mother fuckers, buy amd 7series chipsets and Experience da phenom power dont waste ur money dont pay more for less power. always amd

  • I made $2000 off of AMD stock. Thanks guys!

  • that chick was kind of hot last year. i think the stress is getting to her.

  • why is everyone so dedicated to either AMD or intel? the way I see it is that sometimes AMD is better, and sometimes intel is better, I buy them both whichever happens to be better at the time.

  • thats more retarded than asking why buy dual-cores if quad-cores are out.

  • I like AMD, but the Video is not loud enough!

  • ugh yea cuz intil now

amd onyl had 2.3ghz now they have 2,4 and 2,5 ghz quads lol ur pwned

  • I support AMD!!!!

  • Say what you want but this girl is full of BS.

She is always claming that AMD "is the best solution" and that their next product will be better and better but actually it's not the case.

  • Most of my computers have been AMD. It's been my experience with AMD it is much more durable. The processor does not experience diminished performance over time. So i'm commited to AMD. It's a great product.

  • It's not worth getting a quad core processor because there is not a lot of apps that will support 4 cores.

  • This is a common practice in VLSI engineering. Intel does it to their Core 2... disable the defective cache and make then into Pentium Dual Core, NV does it with their GPU, disabling some pipes and make them into lower end parts. And the list goes on. A larger silicon will always be getting lower yield, so what better way to make more money than closeing the defective parts and sell them.

  • AMD rocks!!!!!!

  • AMD rocks!!!!!!

  • AMD so needs an add campaign that targets gamers! Something really cool with maybe a mascot, a character that people can associate with AMD! ATI have got Ruby, Nvidia had Mad Mod Mike and Intel's adds really shit me so c'mon AMD here's your chance to start owning with your advertising coz youse guys really need Loyalty right now more than Technology!!!

  • Maybe they are having trouble producing Phenoms so they will try to sell the defective ones with

    only three functioning cores.

  • Why the HEl would they go bacward from a Quad-Core to a triple-core Processer, thats plain retarted. LOL

  • headroom for overclocking on 3core cpus vs smaller headroom on 4core cpus is a great reason.

  • Three cores: Less expensive. Makes a way to sell "defective" Quad-Cores to increase sells and ofcourse serve a far bigger group of consumers. I think this is just great stuff.

  • How do you guys know that the 3rd core is broken? Maybe it would run too slow due to defect so better switch it off and sell a 3-core higher clocked CPU.

  • The triple core is a quad core with one of the cores disabled, similar to Sony's PS3 Cell - to increase the yield of the fabrication process. Why throw away a quad core with one of the 4 cores on bad silicon when you can just disable it and sell it? Good economic sense AMD. Keep it up. We can't go back to a monopoly again. That would suck!

  • The most important factor is price. The benchmark shows the triple core processor has no benefit compare with Intel Core 2 Duo (even the dual core processor). If the price is low enough, there would be some market for this processor. Well, Intel could alway lower price for their quad core processor. Don't forget Intel's dual core is well proformanced and their quad core processor is outproformanced the AMD quad core processor. If Intel's processor's price are low enough, AMD has no chance.

  • So when a quad core fails (as opposed to trashing it) you market it as a triple core and continue to sell it to the consumer under the guise of being in touch with market needs.

  • Even tho this is going back, you have to realize this will be excellent in labtops and mobile computers, tri-core cpu > dual core so we are getting closer to desktop performance in mobile computers, now..if only they could make them as upgradable lol

  • Amd is loosing badly, but it was winning = Athlon XP - S939 Single Cores and thats a fact :P, google n u'll see but anyway im disappointed sorta, the good thing is the prices are gonna be wayy wayy low, in comparison to intel..

  • "During a hotly-contested back-to-school market season, AMD bested Intel in U.S. retail sales. Claiming more than half of September's sales (52% to Intel's 46%) is probably one of AMD's most marketable victories in some time." From geek(.)com, title; "AMD outsells Intel in US retail market"

  • amd you lied about upgradabilty and wasn't informative about their new line of processors either... wat a waste of money on my mobo! they stated about oct cores, but they wanna work on tri cores? amd are flip-floppers i swear! whats best to differentiate is oct cores for 200 dollars! not tri cores u damn tards!

  • i have intel and amd computer... muhauhhaha!!!

anwaywho, it seems that more people have intel, and alot of schools already have intel processors... so basically we are running out of people who wants to even purchase a computer... gamers who wanna upgrade?? ha...ha... im done... new hobby (FISHIES)!

  • AMD keeps boasting about their "native true quad-core" CPUs, but what difference does it make? the Core 2 Quad Q6600 performs better than any phenom out right now and it's acually a bit cheaper than the 9700.

And Triple-core? please. Applications are getting more multi-treaded, so one less core vs. a quad core is less speed, even if the frequency of the cores is slightly higher than a quad.

    Seriously AMD.

The only reason Intel's Processors are faster is their L2 Cache.

  • This is a good idea... people who may not afford quad core can go for this, and its probably worth it because most apps dont support true quad core yet anyway

  • "just compile with smp, and let the app use what it needs"

  • why go triple-core why not just got for the processor with more power the quad-core

  • What are they supposed to do with all the broken quads?

  • their trying to appeal to the budget market

  • "Why would they deactivate a core and brand it as a tri-core" ?

Cause every Core is tested independently and has a different maximum reachable frequency.

    Example: (after testing)

    C1 2.805 GHz

    C2 2.736 GHz

    C3 2.710 GHz

    C4 2.245 GHz

Such a CPU could be sold as a Triple 2.7 GHz or a Quad 2.2 GHz only, if one Core can only reach a low max frequency or is propably even broken, so the statement "this tri-core costs the same amount as the quad-core for AMD to make" isent quite accurate.

  • They wouldn't deactivate a core to sell as a tri-core simply because of their current yield problems for barcelona, however, they will be selling savageable, broken barcelonas as tri-cores which comes from the exact same piece of silicon as quad-core barcelona. Hence, it has the same cost of production. Also, AMD would be shooting themselves in the foot if they their tri-core has higher clockspeeds than their quads. Most games are not optimized for multi-cores.

    clockrate > # of cores

  • AMD is soo fucked. They need blockbuster sales to get them out of that 5.4 billion dollar debt that they still owe an unknown source which is OBTW due in a few years. And we aren't even talking about AMD making a profit. Just let IBM buy you out AMD already and end the suffering. Besides IBM has more then enough money to truly take on Intel anyhow.

  • Im pretty sure..they just defeated the purpose in cores

  • Whats the offial release date for the native AM2+ mobos?

  • Imagine running F@H,SETI,and the many other arrays of programs that help gather information to proliferate our technology or humanity. I am still waiting for the day that I can throw a few cores to seti, a few to F@H, a few for other various software and still game and do everyday normal tasks on just one system.

  • why sell 3 when you can sell 4?

    Oh right...

  • native triple core? wtf?

  • Who cares about "native quad core" ?

Who cares about "native tri-core" ?

I would just get the quad core processor that performs better.

Intel Yorkfield is going to kick AMD's ass

  • I really hope AMD manages to compete with the Core 2 Duo with this. Otherwise, we're looking for an Intel monopoly, which is not good at all.

  • Note to Hector Ruiz:

To survive against INTC, you must do the following:

    1. Spin off ATI again. Yes it's expensive, but if you fuse two asses, you still get an ass.

    2. Use the money(3-4Billion) to buy yourself a 45nm fab or 32nm even.

    3. Split the native quad core into 2 dual cores, and lose the L3 cache(it induces more memory latency), and double the L2 cache to 1MB-2MB per core.

  • hahaha.

  • I just hate it when AMD pumps the "native, true" quad core slogan. This is exactly why they lost the war. Not even Intel would dare to manufacture a quad core silicon on 65nm process. Manufacturing 2 dual cores on 45nm process is a much better yield solution than a "native" quad, and with much more L2 cache too

  • They lost the war? That is interesting... if they lost the war, then they would be out of business, and I don't see that happening in the near future.

Why wouldn't Intel dare to manufacture a native quad core on 65nm? Because of die size? So I guess that using 2 dual cores manufactured @ 65nm in an MCM package saves overall die space huh? I don't think so.

  • It is because of die space. The larger a single die is the more likely it will contain a defect from the manufacturing process. This drives up your costs.

  • They would be out of busiess if it weren't for the 2.2Billion senior notes, then a few months later another 1.5Billion.

Intel's quad right now are all 65nm MCM. They do have higher yield than AMD and a higher clock speed due to better yield. You, spineless1, should know I speed the truth.

  • Intel is raping AMD in dual and quad-core. So, what does AMD do? It creates its own market in which it can sell defective processors.

  • Makes good business sense to me. If they didn't create the X3 market, then they would have to sell the chip as a dual core. By selling it as a tri-core they can maximize their revenue relative to the functionality of the CPU.

  • lol @ made up BS

  • Also, releasing a triple core off a broken quad core is like telling your rival that your 65nm SOI process sucks. It's stupid to reveal your weakness. Just like relasing the x2 6400+("black edition") on the 90nm process, it says the same thing: your 65nm SOI is not good. And you have to compete with 45nm fabs from Intel?

  • Are you to expect that all dies that both AMD and Intel make are perfect? Utilizing the dies that have one failed core makes total business sense. AMD now has three market price points, where Intel will only have two.

I would bet that if Intel were able to do this, they would, but they can't with their architecture. If think this is one of the motivating factors behind this move, that AMD can do this, and Intel can't because their architecture isn't as flexible.

  • spineless1:

You are speaking to someone who bought 10+ AMD AthlonXPs when they kicked ass compared to the P4s. I haven't touched AMD since Core came out. Why? because Core is better.

No, I never said Intel has perfect yield. I said Intel has "better" yield. Just like stryer420 said, a bigger die gives you higher defect possibilities.

I am a true AMD fan, but until AMD can start making good business choices(like not buying ATI with 5.4B borrowed cash), INTC will kick your ass.

  • spineless1, I suggest that you re-read my posts again. I SAID, "better yield", not "perfect yield". INTC gets better yield than AMD right now. Architecture wise, the only thing AMD's better than Intel is the on die memory controller, which is now negated by the L3 cache. And HyperTransport, which INTEL will have next year(CSI, and ondie memory controller, and dumping FB-Dimm)

  • Intel would be able to do this and will, if tricore works out for AMD. Also, Intel's manufacturing process is actually much more flexiable and affordable than AMDs. The main problem AMD is facing right now is low yields with their barcelona processor. This is because of the huge 1 piece die that AMD has chosen to adopt, compared to the 2 piece die that Intel is using to make a processor where they can mix and match cores to salvage cores while keeping their product lines static.

  • Your argument lacks intelligent thought... I frankly don't even know why I am replying to it.

To assume a 100% yield rate for either Intel or AMD is naive of you.

  • Releasing a triple core off a broken quad core processor shrinks the quad core market in a way. That's bad for both Intel and AMD. But price competition hurts AMD more so than Intel. Again nice move, Hector.

  • Translation: "We have a bunch of broken quadcores we'd rather sell then throw out"

  • You have to differentiate defective and deactive boon haha

  • Why would they deactivate a core and brand it as a tri-core? FYI, this tri-core costs the same amount as the quad-core for AMD to make.

  • Why not just have like 2 and a half cores or 5 and a quarter cores or PI number of cores?

  • say what you want about intel's greatness, they don't have any HOT execs like this.

  • lol, except that AMD is a processor company, not an escort company

  • Can't sell 4? Let's dump them to the desktop instead lol
