whats the point of this? Im not a dj, but all of that didnt sound like music at all. All of it seemed out of beat as well. Not h8ing or anything, just wondering how and why people practice this.
hmmm..... i 'm trying really hard to see how i can answer your comment.
i guess you grow up listening to a very different type of music that we're used to and probably live in a different culture. this stuff doesn't fit with normal music theory, it looks easy but its *really hard* when you're infront of some real turntables trying to weave out even 1 or 2 sounds. this evolved from early days of "cutting and sampling". Also this *Turntablism*, not *club dj'ing* where they play music.
Vinyl manipulation. Taking existing song arrangements and re-arranging them on the fly. This is the dirty side of DJing. The real underground funky stuff. Of course most of us came from mobile DJing and we can rock party's too. This is just one segment of many when it comes to being a DJ. :)
Being able to showcase your skills to a broad audience in order to influence and elevate the artform.
Nando was battling me. It was pretty intense. My needles skipped on my scratch set in the second round, so I got owned basically. =) I'm surprised there's footage of this and it's actually the ITF USA Finals 1998.
To clarify, we are both talking about the guy in red, right? That is definitely the opening bit of "Brandy & Monica - The Boy is Mine" that he is juggling at the start. It sounds different because he juggled the beat really well and its sped up (notice how he presses the rpm button of the right turntable to play the track at normal speed afterwards) Also he doesn't change any of the records, just flips the left one over. Its The Boy is Mine throughout.

Brandy & Monica - The Boy Is Mine. Nice juggle, I didn't recognise it until he played it normally (and at regular speed too, heh)
