Really, I wish you would turn of the background music ;) That bassline lives a life of its own in my opinion. No disrespect but sometimes less is more and more my friend would be you without anything else interfering. Good job!
Fantastic...I and others here dig the African rhythms and inventive bass lines. Paul Simon made an admirable decision to showcase this music way-back-when. Thanks ato71 for this and for the Johnny Clegg stuff.
Great job man in emulating one of the great baselines in history, in my humble opinion. If you want to practice seek out the fantastic unreleased version of diamonds.
the timing for this bassline is hard to get right, but you got it. i think the tone sounds great, each lower note seems to have this delayed expanding sound that fits in real well
Great job. I'm trying to learn this myself. I've got the main groove down but I can't figure out the licks. The longer of the two is especially difficult.
Can you post a vid with the bass fills slowed down a little?
Good playing but I think you need to up the treble a lot when playing this. It is a conversation between the guitar and the bass and the bass line is more up front than usual for a pop song. It also will help to bring out that fretless "growl".
ato, sorry you have probably been asked this many times (I'm too lazy to search through all your comments to find out), but can you tell me a bit about your bass? It's an interesting model, sounds good too. I know most of what you play, you have a great colletion, I'm so jealous, but then I'm also jealous of your playing (I should practice more). Keep up the good work...how's the Jamiroquai going?
No problem ('m so proud of my basses that I'm always happy to talk about them). Well, this one is a Laurus Quasar SL T800, hand made by an italian luthier. Maple Neck Through, Kaya mahogany body with rosewood top, tonal chambers in body and neck, Noll electronics (I think) act/pass switch and Michel Benedetti pick up. It sounds fantastic (the videos doesn't pay him justice).
Musical projects are suspended for summer holydays: in september we'll start again, meanwhile I'm studying.
What gets me is that I had to go onto Internet to find something like this. At music school, all we learnt was American stuff and the other students weren't educated about cats like Bakithi and here is from HERE!!!. Nice playing my brother!!! TIGHT!!!
Maybe less "cat" than Bakithi but I like also Solly Letwaba RIP (former bassist with Johnny Clegg&Savuka). Many thanks to you my brother for your apreciation.
Hi again, I am making my way through your videos. This one is sheer magic , I just love those harmonics. you are so damn good, and that beast just sings with you in control.
Absolutley brilliant, i love Bakithi and this is one of my fave basslines of his, you nailed it man totally. 5*, what is that monster your playin man?!
Still my favourite bass line ever. :-) Your time was great and I know it's hard to get perfect intonation on a fretless. I say it was a perfectly good live performance. Keep on groovin'!
your class mate
keep it up

I like that you use fretless, respectable. as a cello player i find frets like.... well cheating. but your great man. 5 stars.
