My question to you is. In that length of time how are you going to get any income and how are you going to make back into the job market to start your career?

The government is not like that. They actually think of the consenquences. If you were to work for your own government voluntarily, then you are helping back your nation for all that it has done for you.

Now, why would you think that the government will not give you any sort of money while you are doing work?

And if you are already living your life with a good career, thanks to your degree/certificate, then you will probably have money saved up, such as RRSP.

Where the army "offer" you to pay for your college if you work for them (probably you can go to school after coming back from Irak, if you ever return). So, if it's voluntary, and people can take advantage to be educated. Very welcome. Have you stopped by a university recently? The amount of army recruiting places is amazing!
