Nice interview. I also highly recomend the 2hr interview with with Shearer on the kevin Pollack chat show (in fact Pollack interviews all three tap members and Rob Reiner as well), good stuff.
Pfff...Dick Ebersol needs to shut the fuck up sometimes. He's very good at NBC sports, he needs to shut up about NBC entertainment. During the whole Conan/Leno debacle, Dick called Conan a punk for not bending over and taking whatever NBC gave him. He didn't have a dog in that fight and really should have just shut the hell up.
Ever since the fifth season, many "fans" of The Simpsons have been saying "it's not as good as it was five years ago"...every year...for fifteen years.
So stop watching it already then you Goddamn Comic-Book-Guy wannabe d-bags!
What kind of an idiot would try to claim there was no research behind this interview?
Because of the research, the interview covered topics I've never heard Harry talk about on any other TV or radio show... behind the scenes friction on the Simpsons and SNL, Harry's parents holocaust experience, his child actor days with Abbot and Costello and Jack Benny, and being offered the role as Eddy Haskel on Leave it to Beaver, plus being a reporter for Newsweek, and teaching English in Compton
Great interview. Unlike other interviewers who do no research and just ask the same old Simpsons questions, Stern got Harry to talk about things that you don't hear in most of his interviews, like the bad blood between him and the producers and other cast members.
Harry Shearer is a major league talent and deserves a more thorough and probing interview than the one Stern provided. Stern didnt even know what voices Shearer did on the Simpsons! I havent watched the Simpsons in years, and even I know what Shearer does Burns, Flanders, and Smithers among others.
EVERY other interview of Shearer covers what voices he does on the Simpsons. EVERY OTHER INTERVIEW. Stern doesn't do the same thing that everyone else does. That's why he makes the big money... he does detailed in depth interviews like this one that covers way more than just the topics that every other interview does.
@ytu2006 Stern does ask him what voices he does on the show and Shearer does a few of them. But it isn't the focus of the interview at all, which is refreshing.
@ytu2006 Most interviews last about 2 minutes which doesn't lend much time to in depth conversation. Don't get me wrong Howard is a great interviewer.
When people do interviews these days, generally the "research" you've described is done by the actor's publicist - as in they hand a list of acceptible, boring, generic questions that the actor has memorized responses to, or amusing anecdotes that the actor can tell, or yattah yattah yattah. Everything is carefully contrived before hand, which is why, as I'm sure you've noticed, most interviews sound identical to each other.
Stern doesn't do this. That's why he's one of the best.

Matt Groenigh will openly mock you for spending money on Simpson DVDs - a show that's on free TV about 25 times a day.

Terrible interview. Does Howard do ANY research on his guests? Ever? He's worse than Larry King.
