she is so smart.Cambodian people are smart, except Cambodian's President so fool.He been president for along time untill now . Powerfull man don't want to step down.
I feel the best way to help people is with an education followed by paid work or given the means to run their own business, which is not that hard in SE Asia as the start up costs are relatively small. However, education is a huge issue in Cambodia as hardly any kid stays in school long enough. It's the making of a huge rich - poor gap (for the small part of society that can afford a continuing education and has "connections" as well) that's already become very apparent.
I'm always torn when I see that. It's a joy to interact with the trinket selling kids in Angkor Wat (I visit every year as I love being there and in Cambodia in general) but it is still work and given the choice, I'm sure they'd rather be playing. Don't even ask if they are missing school, I guess. On the other hand, the families depend on the income and would we do it differently if in their shoes.
Actually it is quite easy to say., it is my experience that being able to regurgitate useless knowledge is not a sign of intelligence, only the ability to repeat what youve heard.
I did the same with animal trivia as a child, sure didnt make me a genius, just kinda a geek.
But for all I know the girl could be a new Einstein, but its not likely is it ?
It seems to me that every country I ever visited the kids spoke more than one language. Here in the US this is not the norm. It is a fact that if you learn other languages you gain a greater understanding of people in general. I remember when I was a kid, people thought if you only spoke, say, Spanish, that you were stupid, lol. That belief is still strong, but I do try to tell people that English is not the only language. The more you learn, you learn there is more to learn, lol.
I just came back from Cambodia. The Khmer people are the warmest, kindest and most generous people I have ever met. They would take me in and give me their last bowl of rice without asking for anything in return. Which always made me feel guilty so, I would over compensate in some way. Truly, amazing people. If anyone plans a visit, I highly suggest staying at Hotel 89. You will not regret it!
@GrOwTh187 Actually, we walked by a few hours later, and she was in school, they meet outdoors in Angkor Wat. Where do you think they learn all this stuff!
@GrOwTh187 look up transform cambodia? what are we, transformers? us khmer are not robots, it dont matter how much our county has transform we are still human! some are rich and some are poor, those who are not educated, have to sell to earn money to be educated...speaking of education, where did you get the knowledge of knowing that they are not in school?
when i was in Cambodia. I wonder why little kids in Siem Reap be able to understand and speak English pretty good. my dad told me they didn't go to school to learn English they just learn from hearing foreigners's conversation.
I love all the Cambodian kids. They have to work hard to make money to pay for school, so the smart ones end up both street smart and book smart. When I was there, I tried to bargain a girl down when she was selling me a book. She said 'but there's no profit!" - haha, of course I bought several books and paid full price. I just made her promise to share the money with her friend and little brother who were with her. But I suspect she outsmarted them and got all the money.
hello...smart girl!!
