I've a lot of love and respect for U2 and always enjoy Mark's reviews so interested to see this 'them and us' attitude in the quite clever Kermode camp. It's a shame U2 are in this position now. During the 90's they really got it right and became a proper rock n' roll band with amazing songs and good image. This decade they seem to have set about destroying all the good work they put in. I first heard U2 through Achtung Baby and thought they were a funky ass rock band. That album in isolation is just that. I just wish they'd continued evolving in that style.

I think that it is more accurate to say that there some English people like to say that they hate U2 because it sounds a bit uncool to say that you like them -in the same way they wouldn't admit to liking Sting, Dire Straits, Queen or Phil Collins; other artists who "everyone hates" but sold millions of CDs and played to sold out stadiums. Well, Joshua Tree is an influential album whether you like it or not so I would say they are amazing just for the knock on effect they've had to music. I.e. Radiohead, coldplay and muse all quote joshua tree as an influence.

On top of that they USED to do something fresh, the volume swells on With or Without You are not only rarely used in that way on a guitar but they create a beautifully placid atmosphere. It beats the large amount of bang-a-few-notes-out crap that saturates the market.
