Here and there.

If you have trouble gathering enough, grab as much as you can, and then lose a life before the checkpoint after the Luma. You'll start with all the bits you've collected, and all the star bits will reappear.

Anyhow, this one is easy to miss! I'll just say that it's found on the "Sunbaked Sand Castle" mission and that there is a planetoid you land on that has a switch you are supposed to ground pound.

The tricky thing is that it sinks under the sand pretty quickly, so you might not reach it in time. I think if you wait, though, it resurfaces.

I don't think they ever tell you about them... Well except one of them. They are secret stars; as long as you have the correct level unlocked, you can get them.
