This is not Johnny's most famous song, but it may be one of his most important. He captures the essence of rural Southern speech in this song ("lil ole note", "I'll be dat blamed", etc) in a way that is authentic and impossible to fake. I love the later version he did as well. Time capsule material for future generations.
@goodoldbill cos it aint as good as the ones u ever hear MELODICALLY .. Lyrically is pretty good though .. an the Unchained version gives it more life .. but still dont alter the fact it aint got a hook an has an unremarkable melody ..
They have this version completed. I have it on a CD. ^-^ Sounds just like this, but a little deeper(he's a tad older) and it's got the last two verses. <3
Never once did I do the song on stage, and as the years passed, it bugged me more and more that the song was unfinished. So, about a year ago, I wrote the third verse.
When I brought it to these sessions, it was like a new song. Finally, after 41 years, I'm satisfied with "Mean Eyed Cat"
"Mean Eyed Cat" took forty years to write. I hadn't finished it in 1955 when, at a session, I sang the first two verses for Sam Philips. He said, "That's a keeper. I like that." I said, "But it isn't finished." He said it was good enough. I was totally surprised when it was released not long afterward. And all these years, every time I would see the title in print, or hear the song on the radio, I'd cringe.
i love this song:)

This song is awesome! But it seems to be missing the last two parts.

Arguably one of Cash and TN2s best from the Sun years - even if it isn't one of their most popular songs.
