@BeccaStarfucker not to mention mandatory languages, for our equivalent of A-levels, 8 subjects for finals, more during the years (= 2 or 3), the mandatory ones are english, dutch (duh) and german or french. Add math and half of your schedule is covered. Those 4 together mean 14lessons a week for me, out of the 27 I have.

If you go to the netherlands, almost everyone you meet speaks english and german. cause dutch is kind of a mixture of both.

O_o ehm... no XD They're alike because they're all Germanic languages ;) And most Dutch people do speak English quite well, but that's because English is just a world language. Most people don't speak German though... They teach us German in school, but most of them will never be able to speak it fluently (unlike Willemijn of course XD)
