If I had never heard the original, I'd give it a thumbs up. However, I can't help but associate this song with the great contralto voice of Karen Carpenter. The original was in the key of A, which was perfectly suited to Karen's lower "chest" voice. The song here is in C#, which at least makes is singable for Katelyn, but not the soothing tones expected from a Carpenters song. Nonetheless, a great effort!
Really nice - the teen Joanna Lauren should have been on this show back when she was 16 - go check out her voice - sounds a lot like Karen Carpenter! Good job love your voice!

Y'all should be glad that the grandchildren of the original Carpenters fans are still singing their music. At this stage they could have been as obscure as some old ragtime from the early 1900's to these kids, but instead this great music will go on and on, and in the year 2100 they will still be singing it long after we're ashes and dust.

When a singer chooses to perform a particular selection that someone else has made famous, he/she is aware that the performances will be compared. That's just the deal.
Discerning ears will try to hear in each performance what makes it special, individually. But this girl's performance, even in itself, isn't particularly special.
I'll point out some rough spots in my next message.
This girl, however, is certainly prettier than Karen (or Richard, for that matter.)
I liked when Carl Weathers sang it on Happy Gilmore; if that was him singing, which i suspect it was. Brings tears to my eyes every time. But the Karen Carpenter version IS the gold standard for this song. This girl is good and very cute, but I think she will do much better with country songs.

I have to amend my last post.
This is a VERY special performance for someone of this age. I meant that, as all of the many renderings of this songs go, it isn't.
Here are the spots where I think Katelyn could improve:
0'14"-15": a little too low for her range
0'24" and 0'30": I'm not fond of these flourishes, so in vogue these days
0'43": pinched
1'01", 1'07", 1'14", 1'18'-19": chirpy. It's always hard to attack a high note in a phrase.
1'29": again, too low.
She's got FANTASTIC teeth!!!

when a song becomes a international hit, there is good reason why that happened.
not only the song and lyrics have to be great, but the singer's voice has to have the right quality that matches the song.
Karen's voice and this song were a perfect match.
not all songs that Carpenters sang were hits, and Karens voice weren't so effective in those songs.
