@DMWH That's true. But the thing is, put Yahara Sensei in a modern kata competition of good level and he probably would not go through the first round. From a WKF view, Yahara's kata lacks controll and finesse. Yahara was one of the greatest in traditional karate, just like Valdesi is one of the greatest modern kata competitors. Both deserve respect for reaching the top in their respective organisation.
@thefanaticx ,no man we can not compare small valdesi with japanes yahara , the japanss they are the father of karate ,and kanazawa was the teacher of yahara ,and kanazawa by himself was the student of funccushi the fondator of karate , valdesi i am better then him , you know what the last japanes in karate is better then him .....................
This is a real kata, not that stupid XMA stuff. though its cool, its taking the traditional discipline out and replacing it with performance rather then self control.
I just cannot get this kata for some reason the jump near the end throws me off and sometimes I get confused on the ridge hands in it gaaah so fustrating
i have seen white belts doing empi aswell as jion.. doesnt mean its for them. people do not seem to realize they should learn a kata properly before going on to the next one. this is a kata for experienced higher dan grades. sure you can learn pattern, but not essence when attempting to learn kata before its really your time..
And that is the problem. You have a different view of kata. To put is simple. If Sensei Yahara would join a kata competition, the likes in which Valdesi enters, he would not get through the first round. From a wkf competition view there are many faults in his kata. (Slow turning speed for example.)
However the same counts for Valdesi. In your view, and the competition that goes with it, Valdesi is full of faults.
Different game, different rules. Both are masters at their respective game.
You have true, karate is always in evolution, nowadays people do katas better, but I think Luca Valdesi acting very much. His katas' longer about 30-35 seconds, than the standard. It's a very big problem.
I've to agree dude, Michael Milon is awesome, my dad's had the pleasure of judging him at world level several times, infact my dad used Unsu to win the Isle Of Man Open in 2005 & 2006.
Anybody here who admires Yahara did not train at either the JKA in suidobashi or Ebisu. This animal punched one westerner (who had been loyal student) so hard his ocular nerve was damaged and he became blind and unable to work. This punch was as usual after the stop command. If you like him so much then spar him him and see what happens if you hit him. You won't like him so much after that.
Yahara demands 100% and does not tolerate a weak spirit. I trained in Japan for several years in the early 80s and got to know him well. Calling him "despicable" is a cheap shot not worthy of a response. Some did get hurt during training (Japanese mostly) especially those in the instructor training program. He helped 2 westerners outside the dojo by acting as a guarantor for housing for one and giving the other a TV and furniture because the guy was financially poor.
I don't understand haw anyone can consider himself a great master of karate and perform a kata this awfull. This guy completely forgot about his feet. And the loosers posting comments as "awesome", "amazing", "great unsu"... shoot yourself or shut up!!!
do u do wado ryo or something or are u just thick that was a grreat kata i train with one of the most respected sensies there is and im sure he would agree
This on the video is Yahara sensei. If you realy know someting about karate, you should respect him and his unsu. I want to see YOU doing it... Don´t hide yourself behind the name of michael milon - a great karateca too.

ghazals99, Yahara Sensei is one of Shotokan's greatest legends. And Unsu is his favorite Kata. He performed it at hundreds of tournaments.

@ghazals99 Then you obviously live under a rock.
MMilon 2 months ago
Wow!!!!! I don't think it gets much better than that. Yahara himself may disagree, but I think that was PERFECT.

One of the most vicious and despicable human beings. He deliberately injured Westerners training in Japan many times.

Is it just me, or do I see a serious mistake on the last punch with the heel off the ground? Doesn't really matter though, the spirit is there.
