I was watching this as it happened. I was pretty much thinking 'well that's Ronnie...' and let it go at that. Felt a bit robbed though. Hendry and O'Sullivan matches were a great clash of style and temperment. A great snooker match to kick back and watch.

I was watching this as it happened. I was pretty much thinking 'well that's Ronnie...' and let it go at that. Felt a bit robbed though. Hendry and O'Sullivan matches were a great clash of style and temperment. A great snooker match to kick back and watch.

He buckles under pressure more easily than them which is why he's never won anywhere close to what they have. Winning titles is a result of consistency which O'sullivan does not have. O'sullivan is not and will never be as great as hendry and davis were in their prime. Those guys dominated the sport whereas O'sullivan has, at most, only managed to dominate the #1 spot in the rankings, And sorry but to be a true great legend of sport you have to win titles on a consistent dominant basis. Love or hate the man, the fact is, he gets Snooker public and media attention. As long as he hasn't murdered or raped someone, any press is good press. Snooker was in the first few pages of the newspaper for a couple of days after this. When did that happen before? Most likely the last time O'Sullivan did something bizarre. And people are biased against Ronnie. If Alex Higgins had done this, he would have been praised as "legendary" - which he is - and "just Alex being Alex" - which he was.

I couldn't really believe this when I saw it. But at the same time I was happy. Ronnie O'Sullivan is Good, but he isn't the "Greatest." His opponent Hendry is a far superior player. Now don't call me biased or anything, because I am an Ulster man, but before he died I saw Alex Higgins in action. If he was in his prime Higgins would have slaughtered him. But the thing which really gets on wick was when didn't pot the black for the 147 earlier this year, because it was unworthy if him. Bugger off.

The guy is an idiot...he just loves to be labelled as 'the troubled genius'. He has unbelievable talent around the snooker table, but snooker is about mental strength as well as potting balls, that is why he falls well behind the likes of Stephen Hendry and Steve Davis when you talk about the best player to have ever picked up a cue.

Ronnie O'Sullivan has never been diagnosed with manic depression. It is easy for anyone to sit back and say they don't care nor want to be world champion, the truth is that he wouldn't be playing if he didn't want to win. He certainly does not need the money. The reason we give players like Hendry and Davis a 'second thought' is that they have completely dominated the sport over many years, something O'Sullivan has never achieved.

@linksedge As an aside, you don't need to be diagnosed to know what the state of your mental health is. Funnily enough, those affected tend to have a clue as to what's going on. But you only need to google his name and depression and see all the results, including NHS ones. In interviews, he's often said about massive shifts from mania to rock bottom, which is what being bi-polar is all about.
I give Hendry and Davis a thought when I think of boring, and sportsmen (respectively of course).

The bottom line is that there are no medical facts that he is suffering from any mental illness. In my opinion he uses it to excuse his appalling behavior. Davis and Hendry may seem boring to many, but they show the ultimate respect for the game of snooker and know how to conduct themselves.

Perhaps, at some point, you'll make an assertion about him that's correct. I don't really give a toss about him, or whether people like him but I think snooker would be all the worse without him. Sport should never be a binary thing of "well, did they win titles or didn't they". @omartron {{passion that's why}} Snooker is supposed to be his passion. The reality is he cares more about the drama and attention he gets, than the game. this isn't a one off occurance. Ronnie has thrown the towel in many times whilst behind, instead of giving his all to the end of the match, he just gives up playing and basically throws the frames away, intentionally giving his opponent easy chances, becasue he doesn't have the heart a player like Hendry or Davis had.

In a way, I think I understand this. A phenomenon like O'Sullivan can only HAPPEN from PERFECT practice. I'm sure, when he's deep in a practice, if he "loses it," he STOPS--or at least goes back to fundamentals, or some deep consideration to "what" it is that he's lost. What he DOESN'T DO is just keep whacking at them. Thus, here, he just couldn't hit them, and couldn't BEAR to continue when things weren't working right. It's just that sort of thing which ALLOWS someone to excel.
