  • Oh dear.. Chris is sounding a bit like Nigel Tufnal here... still. they were so golden and beautiful in those days.

  • Bruford.

  • Best era from Yes!

  • at the top of this clip "Long Distance Runaround," you can here the interplay between Bill and Wakeman. They are accenting the beat every 5th beat, but the song is in 4/4. Very interesting effect

  • You don't need to be a fucking shitty michael angelo or any other "tappingmaster". Steve Howe is the way!

  • "...you couldn't possibly do it on flute"...

    CHALLENGE ACCEPTED.

  • " I thought that was quite rockin' "...

  • What a cool video,,,,,,so young, so creative,,, one of the finest bands ever exist...

  • Does anyone know at what venue the concert footage was filmed, im thinking if its October 1971 it would have been the Fragile UK tour. Any idea where?

  • @TheRobo66 The live footage was filmed at the Hemel Hempstead Pavilion on 3 October 1971 Hertfordshire, England

  • I love when Bruford was in the band. I wish there was more live footage before he left. Bruford, please form a Yes2 band with Anderson, Rabin, Kaye or R.Wakeman, Levin.

  • chris squire is the fucking man

  • I'd do terrible, horrible things to hear this performance of Heart of the Sunrise from start to finish.

  • @Caulfield789 What do yo mean?

  • @KillingLies1 There are clips from a performance of Heart of the Sunrise in this video. And I would love to hear the whole thing. The only live performance of that song I have is the one from Yessongs, with Alan White slopping his arms in the general direction of the drums and hoping for the best. I'd love to have a HOTS bootleg with Bill Bruford playing.

  • @Caulfield789 haha me to man, me too.

  • @Caulfield789 It is a GREAT song! Can't believe Rick W's son (who now tours with YES, looks just like Rick did in 1969!

  • Heart of the Sunrise! Fuck I wish i'd lived all of this...

  • 4:39 Is he playing Beethoven?

  • @coltrainification Nope, it's Vivaldi's flute concerto (he did say that 5 seconds before ;) Op. 10

  • @coltrainification found a link for ya - youtube.com/ watch?v=id6nRouQUXE although he plays a recorder here I think, it's still the same piece. Great stuff! Enjoy :)

  • Yes.

  • damn those old fender silverface 100 watt amps screamed!

  • rick wakeman is the man!!!!!!!!!!! he always seems to me like, the coolest of all prog rockers

  • He meant his accent dick

  • EVEN SOME OF THE CHICKAS ARE AWARE OF TEH KINDS OF STRINGS

  • @alvicious Yeah. I caught that too.... Oy. Forgiven in light of the shear talent, though.

  • This clip is 40 years old..their music is just as good today too..

  • Such weak vocals but such rich feeling coming from the music as a whole! Brings these long forgotten flower-scented winds of times long gone, yet everfresh...

  • @hallobaaaby wow, that was nice!

  • never ending talent!!!!!!

  • Anything out of LA sucks donkeys...They learn everything and have absolutely no originality......YES did it all before the Hollywood idiots tryed to fool everyone...Im tired of guys coming out of GIT and all the other " pay me and I might give you a good grade"schools ......and putting shitty unoriginal bands together..All notes and no originality! .....Just like everything in the US...Its all about money. Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Etc..... Circus performers!

  • Steve kind of sounds like Jemaine Clement.

  • @SamuelLJacksonsFish yeah the only difference is everyone knows who Steve Howe is , no one knows or gives a fuck who the loser you mentioned is...

  • i hate BBC.

  • Classic footage

  • Only Wakeman would stage a Fender Rhodes on top a Mellotron : ) Rick Wakeman: Stack Master. And heck, still one of the top three Progressive Rock Keyboard Players of All Time.

  • Only Wakeman would stage a Fender Rhodes on top a Mellotron : ) Rick Wakeman: Stack Master

  • Is there a version available subtitled on spanish ?

  • steves voice is pure win hahaha

    love it

  • Guys were kinda sexist back then - (we tried to tell them, but it took a while to get them to *listen*)... Personally speaking, I went to other band's performances for the *view*. I went to Yes concerts & bought their albums for the *music*. It's, articulate, interesting, literate, and complex. The pure musicality of the members of cannot be faulted - especially during the time when this video was made. It's wonderful to see this video, I'm glad it's here, thank you for posting.

  • . "even some of the chicks are aware" "i thought that was quite rockin" ' it's got to be me - i think !! " amuse me !!

  • Watch the interview with Rick at 2:40... HE"S NOT EVEN LOOKING!!!!

  • @02R96 When your fingers are moving that quickly, being able to look really doesn't help much.

  • @02R96 That's muscle memory for you. Look at some of Keith Emerson's stuff, that's equally as sick...

  • OASIS ... please take note....intelligent , articulate, MUSICIANS !!!!!!!

  • i still remember the DREAM THERE!!!!!!!!!! epic! i love Yes man!

  • honest art. real innovation here. don't we all miss them so!

  • Yes and Led Zep that was it for me for a long time

  • There are still good bands out there, like fleet foxes and MCR, but no one will ever replace YES.

  • Good Lord, 'even some of the chicks are aware of what kind of strings are used...'

No, not the 'chicks' ...surely not....whatever next? They'll be wanting the vote soon...

  • @theylive23 Wait, I'm confused. This statement is in opposition of sexism right? Like, through irony?

  • Comment removed

  • @TAfTfilms you should take a chillax pill bro..Girls,Woman or chicks what ever you prefer...we all know that woman are less in too music playing..especially in that time.I don't think Chris intended to be sexist..he's a real gentleman.

  • @stevezane I dunno, I was already pretty relaxed when I wrote that. I know he didn't mean wrong. I don't remember saying anything that would come off as intense. I definitely don't consider him to be sexist.

  • @theylive23 You have to consider that the large majority of girls surrounding them during that time were probably groupies. That, and the majority of musicians they worked with were male. His comment was far from unfounded.

  • steve howe...what a crackin guitarist!!and as for squire...hell yeah gotta love the guy just the greatest bass player ever(in my opinion:):) )and jon anderson...a unique soaring voice:):)

  • Yes in theyre youngness fantastic thanks youtube

  • I think the flute concerto that Steve is talking about is Vivaldi's flute concerto in F, op. 10 no.1. Look it up on YouTube.

    What do you think?

  • that slow part of heart of the sunrise always sends shivers down my spine, especially with the melodic baseline, reverby guitar, and beautiful lyrics that can basically mean anything you want them to

  • It really seems that as a band they were much more tight with Bill Bruford on drums, much more, than with Alan White. (Although i like the more heavy style White perpetrates.)

There are some disastrous early live takes (YesShows) with Alan on drums and here, not much before that , they really, really play together as one.

  • @ramzahnY Yes I agree, Bill is lightyears ahead of Alan. When Bill left the group, so did I.

  • @bluesimage1 just can't get over it can you?

Alan played like a monster on many great Yes albums.

If that's not good enough for some of you all... too bad.

No one likes a quitter anyway! Look at Jeff Beck!

  • wonderful!!!

  • 5 17 its jermaine form flight of the chonchords

  • steve howe, steve fricken howe, what a brilliant musician, just a brilliant musician

  • The best band in history..

  • THE band in my opinion. There are many great bands, but Yes was THE epitomy of good prog. I remember reading a review, in Sounds, many years ago of one of their shows, which went like, 'Layer upon layer of highly symphonic rock music played by virtuoso musicians'; and remember thinking that said it all about the boys.

  • me too

  • I LOVE STEVE HOWE

  • @aprilknights He might be very talented but I think he was a jerk to Trevor Rabin who I think is wonderful. Trevor was the genius behind the hits but some of the band's egos got in the way. I long for the days when both Trevor & Jon were singing in YES.

  • though music isnt as good as it was then there are a couple of modern bands out there that are all right, for example I can think of Phish, Gov't Mule, State Radio, Dave Mathews, I can go on and on, music nowadays doesnt suck, but you do need to know where to look

  • @Adamboms Yeah I agree, you can find even many modern "prog rock" bands if you reeeally look for them, and not just make due with what mtv gives to you

  • Bands don't play like that anymore. They were so great.

  • what kind of pedal used steve howe @2:28 ?

  • Heart of the Sunrise- pristine, immaculate, glorious, soaring, perfection. a song about the dreams of the Sun.

  • damn i wish this was the lineup now a days

  • I wish i could play a guitar atleast a few chords, i tried so hard but it was so difficult, he makes it seem so effertlessly easy when it is complex and awesome to listen to at the same time, i just couldn't move my fingers like everyone, i guess maybe thats a good thing for me, i just love Yes and they made beautiful music I'll always enjoy forever.

  • I'm no Steve Howe (far from it) but the first half of And You and I is dead easy on the guitar - 3 chords and they're all the same shape. Also Wurm is 3 chords, again all the same shape. The rest of these pieces is quite beyond me, but it's fun to play along with while you can.

  • Those halcyon days. Quality

  • Jon Anderson- voice of an angel!

All the guys were beautiful here. The bored looking audience was stupid to just sit there when this great talent was right in front of them!

  • i agree they still do that when they come to town...im like are you NUTS?

  • missdebbielee - maybe they were in total shock . . . ; )

  • People nowdays would take 'Jesus wept' and make something of it in a bad way with their so-called 'politically correct' BS. It is just like the majority of the claimed 'music' of today, calling it 'fresh' even though it sounds like the rest of the crap they have done before... but REAL musicians like YES truly do have 'fresh' sounds/songs even though some of these songs are 30 years old... I'd like to see some of today's so-called musicians do this even with their loops... it wouldn't happen!

  • if rick wakeman was wearing black instead of orange he'd look like a member of a death metal band

  • Wakeman is a genious!

  • Slightly older than us... they set the stage for our high school pranks, and altered states! Pure 1976

  • I was 12 (1972) when I heard this music. I hate ALL the shit today. And I hate all the hate that drowned this music.

  • Yeah? I was 12 in 72...I like some of todays shit....s.t.p. some pearl jam...come on now/ How can you be that pandemic/?...Don't be so quick to condemn...oreo

  • iorioriorio, You seem to be refering to 1990's shit... I was talking about TODAYS shit. I also happen to be a drummer, and I absolutely hate the distasteful crap of today. Please do not respond. And why do you refer to some 'pandemic', is there a medical thing going on here? You have a weird way of expressing yourself, I assume that is from the social desease of today that you've caught and the crappy language and expression of today. Hard to believe you've caught the desease of today.

  • i TOTALLY agree with you,,,no creativity AT ALL!!!!!

  • Steve Howe: the "new Number Two" for a certain week in 1971?

  • I'd always assumed that that Rick Wakeman was a self-indulgent caped virtuoso who had almost single-handedly destroyed rock with his eight keyboards and classical training. I still think that's probably true but the more I see and hear of him the more appealing and down-to-earth he seems -- not the cliche I had imagined him to be. And that little clip of him here at home shows what a superb musician he is.

  • Probably the most innovative, original, artful and intelligent rock band ever.

  • @funkyjones AGREE!!!

  • @funkyjones Absolute genius, they set the bar pretty darn high. No wonder this new generation just makes crud.

  • @funkyjones Probably the stupidest assertion ever written on youtube LOL

    What you?

Funky is good this is a struggle

  • @funkyjones do not take this the wrong way,,,i agree with you,,,i also think that dream theatre are a smart band as well

  • @ 0:57 "even some of the chicks are aware of what kind of strings and things are used...". Try getting away with that one nowadays.

  • That's exactly what I thought!! (& I'm a "chick Bass player" - acoustic Bass). Hee, hee!

  • Ha! Ha! Chris really reminds me of Nigel from Spinal Tap on this one! Don't get me wrong-I'm a Chris Squire fan! This is such a great interview, wish it was on DVD! Thanks so much for sharing this.

  • That is EXACTLY what I thought!! lol

  • Evidently this was on DVD, but it's not available now, except as a torrent (which isn't being seeded right now :-( ). The A Celebration DVD is available at the website posted in the info section.

It's really great to see all these 3rd party Yes films showing up. So much fun to watch the band play the classic stuff and hear them talk about it. Wonderful insight to their creative process through the interviews.

If you told them then they'd still be touring in 2009 they would have laughed at you!

  • I think the sound and mix is pretty great for TV. The band sounds incredible. I would have loved to see them during Fragile/CTTE, when they could do no wrong.

  • And imagine if they really did use the band's console mix. Howe said that, that he felt the sound could have been better if the BBC used the band's pre-mixed sound.

  • " even some of the chicks" LOL

  • If im in the mood.. I can play Mood for a day,, pretty nice.

  • rick wakeman is a fucking genius.

  • is this on DVD?

  • Yes it is, the website address is at the beginning of the video. Paypal is accepted

  • do you know where i can find a live recording of yessongs the fish? the version back in the 70's. ive been looking everywhere, thanks.

  • ?Sorry, Thanks to ClassicRockDVD for posting this .

    It's great.

  • Thanks Tommygun.

    This is great stuff.

  • chris is soooooooo stoned here

  • Ok I'm dying.. I've gone through my Yes albums many times and I still can't find what Rick was playing at 2:59.

  • Comment removed

  • it's at the 8:50 mark in Heart of the Sunrise

  • Ahah! I knew it was from Fragile.. thanks.

  • The melody at 6:06 is glorious.

  • I like what Chris Squire has to say about the role of bassist's and drummers in rock music. It's amazing the prominence they reached in this era.

  • steve howe looks like hugo weaving

  • Saw this 30 minute program from VH1 and thank you for uploading it. I love the way they looked and played. Bands are not like this anymore... everything just turned to shit.

  • @dgbril exactly dg...everything musically today has turned to shit..bands today, no originality, no musicianship, all poser image shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit !!!!!

  • @dgbril There are still hugely progressive and interesting bands around. You're just not going to find them on the radio.

  • @council Thank the fucking Gods LOL

  • rick wakeman was one ugy mother, but hes an amazing musician nonetheless

  • Dude, by today's bullshit music industry standards, they're all ugly.

  • Its like what someone said about Freddie Mercury once, He's ugly but he's a cool kind of ugly.

  • what's the music Steve's playing at 5:20?

  • I think it's Mood For a Day

  • yes , it´s Mood For a Day very strange he is using electric acustic guitar

  • Mood For A Day - from the Fragile album

  • steve howe is amazing. classical, jazz, rockabilly, folk, rock...versatile and eclectic.

  • Steve is the best!!!!!!!

  • Steve Howe is the MAN.

But what's up with that annoying black box in the corner of the video? Is anyone else seeing that?

  • Probably covering up a logo from the television.

  • correct!

  • Chris is a sexist.

  • yeah what is up with that? even the chicks lol.

  • Chris wasn't demeaning womens intelligence. He was saying even the "chicks" were into the music element of the band enough to know what kind of strings he was using etc... Female rock musicians may be common now-a-days but not in the 70s. He was just 'dancing with the spirit of the age'.

  • LOL, Rick. "3 seconds felt like 3 years" indeed!

Steve, too. "Yours is No Disgrace" is more a Stever Howe showcase than a song I would consider being representitive of the band.

  • Rick Wakeman - a blonde Russel Brand !

'Even some of the chicks ask me about strings!'

arent those chicks clever Chris !

  • The chicks were clever in 1970? Really?

In Chris's defense, the world was a different place back then. Seeing "even the chicks" giving significant feedback was obviously viewed as a good thing by him, both for the band and for society together, even if he didn't phrase that as eloquently as he should have. A pre-politically correct rocker, I guess.

  • This looks like pretty high quality to me, compared to some versions I have seen.
