"The Munchkin is a cat breed created by a naturally occurring genetic mutation that results in cats with abnormally short legs. However, the shortness of their legs does not seem to interfere with their running and leaping abilities. [...] Munchkins do not suffer from the many spinal problems that are typically associated with those canine breeds as cats' spines are physically different from dogs'. etc. Wikipedia : Munchkin (cat)
Okay, I would like to say this to everyone who is hounding people about breeding cats and dogs with "Unnatural characteristics". They say it would give them an unfair disadvantage in the wild. Well, domesticating them gives them a disadvantage in the wild. Sure, domesticated cats and dogs have SOME of their natural instincts in the wild, but they lost almost all of them over the thousands of years of domesticating. So yeah, it happens to all of them.
^___^ me and my boyfriend are thinking about getting a munchkin..
sooo.. tell me.. X3 do you think a munchkin can be trained to walk on its hind feet like a person..? I saw yours was kind of scooting around and turning, but could actual walking be done, do you think..?
Awww! Its sooo cute how he stands up for that long! I love all cats, but I can't say I'd ever own one of these. It seems sad to intentionally breed handicaps into them. You might say they can run and jump as far, but I wont believe for an instant that they can catch live wild prey as easily as a regular cat.
@miatageekscott yeah. Lol kind of ironic, I don't see people complain that a Dachshund has short legs but there are complaints about Munchkin Cats for having short legs(well in the comments on this video) :/
Beibei is sooo cute!! I love cats, and he's adorable. I don't get how humans breed cats with short (but cute) legs on purpose :s anyway, if the cats happy, got a warm, safe home, and is well loved and looked after, then thats all that matters soz if anyone disagrees x
As cute as this is, I do not find it odd or rare, as both of the cats that I have owned (who have both had normal length cat legs) have done this naturally in exactly the same way.
Though very cute Beibei, reminds me of my late cat Simba :)
This little guy looks like a dwarf cat. These poor things are breed with legs half the size of that of a normal cat ON PURPOSE. This is just not an accident of nature, it was us humans the ones to create them. They cannot run or jump properly and are prone to early deaths. This is just not fair at all on these poor guys... may look cute but I think it's too cruel to breed them like that... Just my opinion...(by the by I have 3 cats)
@Khatirana They aren't prone to health problems or early deaths. They can run just as fast, and jump just as high as other cats. They were originally bred from a stray cat discovered with short legs. We didn't genetically screw around with them. The only thing is, when you breed two of them together, there's a 25% chance for each kitten to be stillborn. It happens because receiving the gene for the short legs from both parents causes the kitten to be non-viable.
i agree with you.. but i think Khatirana was saying it was there opinion that its crule to breed them like that ... not about the early death stuf.. ...
@fancyshmancypants It doesn't matter how cute they are. You are absolutely incorrect. They most certainly cannot run as fast or jump as high. This makes them prone to early deaths if they escape or get loose. They won't stand a chance in the wild as much as a regular cat would. Btw, purposely breeding an animal to repeat the disability that it was born with is a form of gene manipulation.
You're misinformed. It is not a disability, and there isn't anything wrong with gene manipulation. Gene manipulation doesn't even have anything to do with whether or not the trait is considered a disability. Munchkin cats are just as able bodied as normal cats. This isn't a matter of opinion; this is fact.
@fancyshmancypants Yeah but I'm not misinformed. You said they can run as fast and jump as high as normal cats and that is absolutely not true. They cannot run as fast, and common sense will tell you they can't jump as high for obvious reasons. That makes them more vulnerable and easy prey if they get loose or reproduce in the wild, hence, it's a disability.
I've volunteered with a veterinarian, as well as spent time with munchkin cats and normal cats. I've also done research on the subject of munchkin cats to ensure it is ethical. What you call "common sense" is, in reality, a poor assumption. Yes, their legs are shorter, but they can still jump just as high as any other cat. The can run as fast. It is not a matter of the length of their legs; it's the muscle. Are you going to tell me short people can't run as fast as tall people?
@fancyshmancypants umm yes I am going to tell you that they can't run as fast as tall people. And I'm also going to tell you they can't jump as high. I used the common sense argument but have also done research and seen a special on these cats where they talked about them being easier prey because of their inability to jump as high and run as fast. Sorry. It's just a fact.
@praisemyusername Actually "sir", I know exactly what I'm talking about. Are you seriously going to try to tell me if two cats are running from the same predator that the one with legs half the length as the other will have the same chance at getting away? Obviously not. It's common sense you fool.
@mashupsNmore Sometimes what one would consider common sense can be simply disproved with study. Are you a cat expert, or even studied them to begin with? & You don't have to get your panties in a twist about it and call me any rude names, because I'm not a fool at all. I'm damn smart for my age. Every animal breed/species has advantages and disadvantages in the wild world. Tell me, have you a problem with dachshunds?

@praisemyusername You don't have to be an expert to realize that it is both selfish and cruel to specifically design unnatural characteristics in cats and dogs through selective breeding that will make them instantly more vulnerable in the wild simply because it looks cute.
