badass i had no idea this was so easy i always thuaght tiling was a bitch to do. maybe i can do it for my bathroom cuz my walls are ugly i buaght a new home and it looks gay maybe this will make it look better, yay. :D
@bloozintro The point of DIY is not always cost savings. Some people just like to learn new things and not be dependent on other people. Besides, most of the pros I've hired are so busy going fast that they miss details. For example, I had to dig 3 outlets and 2 lights out of the wall because my "pro" drywallers covered them.
How would that wooden floor or that gypsum board look in a couple of years without any waterproof treatment? If there would have been any it would have been fucked by the screws from that plank you screwed in. What's even the point with it, why not use one of the million lines drawed up? If the tiles are heavy and slides, draw up a horisontal line from the floor and start from there and work up(only real heavy tiles 60x30cm for example.) This video would be misleading and wrong in my country
Draw a line and measure each tile by ten and then another horizontal line, and half that, and put lines all over the wall, and find the centre and move it, and then hang the tiles off each other with tape. WTF?
Good info, and a lot of it in 6 minutes! The layout technique here, for evening the cuts across horiz and vert, are very good stuff for the amateur to know.
by the time you buy a good tile saw and pay for your f*** ups, you might as well buy a case of beer and pay a pro. Life's too short to live in a home where you're saddled with amateurish DIY projects. Pay more and get more. Let a pro do it.
@bloozintro Hire a pro? Maybe if it was something like an electrical overhaul of your house, or putting an addition to your home. It's just tiling. Sheesh.
Ok. The narrator and the guy tiling were saying and doing the opposite. Narrator said mix grout with a margin trowel. He used a drill. Narrator said to grout at a 45 degree angle; the guy is all over the place. You saw the grooves onthe back of the tile... Idk
As a Bathroom fitter my self i recommend that u use disposable plastic or latex gloves.Tile adhesive dries out your skin real bad and can give bad demititis.
@lovetogokiev. My tub surround came out pretty good, but not perfect. I highly recommend using the batten-method as I built my tiles up starting at the top tub edge and the corners did not line up well. I used 1 square foot sheets of glass mosaics as my bottom row (leaving about 1/4" gap to the tub top. Above that I used 4" square tiles and then a thin row of glass mosaics for visual relief. Well, my corners are about 1/4" off from lining up correctly - it doesn't look prof - use the batten.
absolutley do not take this as a guide how to tile, the tiles didnt have enough adheision you could tell when he took one off the wall all of the grooves from the trowel should not still be visable. He should have had datum line lower, no need for the grid either.
I'm planning to tile a bathtub and shower surround. The top of the tub is already straight and level - so I don't know why I need a batten board to set the first row. Am I missing something, or can I just start my first row on the tub-edge and work my way up the wall?
@looseparts If the top of your tub line is level you can start with the tiles there, and if you don't have a window or other obstruction that will make a cut tile less than half size you can start with a full tile around the tube. Otherwise it's that line that you cut so as to make up for unlevel stuff or even out your grid.
@looseparts I'm about to start the same project, but first need to get the old, fiberglass tub and surround out of there. Did you get yours done? And I also wondered the same thing about the tub edge as a guide....
I like the extra detail, I can guess how to tile but not how to tile well. Every hint counts. If you already know everything about how to tile, why bother watching instruction videos?
mmm - not sure if you need to draw a grid on the whole wall... have they never heard of a guide stick - would save a lot of time--- and why was the batten so high (surely if it was lower it would make more sense.
All they are telling your is how to do it RIGHT if you want it to look good and be spaced properly. If you want something less than quality go watch how NOT to put in tile. I thought it was very helpful.
For doit your self projects this is complicated, you just need to level the second row of tiles with a piece of metal or straight piece of wood and go crazy, make sure to use spacer and plumb the edges work your way from the edge in and from the bottom up done deal!!
Home depot makes enough with sales let the man make a living!!
wtf how complicated are they making this sound, mark this line here that line there shift this to here, if that tile is only half of that ,divide it half of the end tile, exactly, what aload of crap!!!!!!!!
Why don't you guys just leave if you find this too simple or some other flaws not to your great expectations. Holy crap its a DIY on tile not a sermon or a brain surgery. Get a life
Funny. They say to lift the tile and check for mortar coverage. And if yo see lines, the trowell notches aren't big enough. So, they show the guy peel off the tile and it's nothing but lines, and he then puts the tile back like it's all good. LAME!
guys , remember 1 thing : if you going to spend shit load of money on tiles ,get a pro to do it for you, it wont be feasible to do it your self just to end up with a crappy job,
the money you will spend buying the tools will most likely cover the price of a good tiler
shitty jobs are always noticeable and will depreciate the value of your home,
@mickyboy200768 Are you an glue? the cost of a professional tiler is WAY more than the cost of tools.. you are better off to practice on a mortar board in the garage or something until you get the concept and then go for it! Tiling is much easier than people think, and much more forgiving when you screw up, as long as you are patient and are not trying so far-out pattern, it's do-able.
and you 'll never get the job done as good as a pro , also here is some other factors you may need to consider, lifting boxes of tiles and buckets of adhesive is a back breaking job, so you have to be a bit fit with good knees (floor tiling) if an accident happens (god forbids) when using the grinder may cost you a finger or 2 . dude, the list of othercostly factors is long and i'm not going into details,
@mickyboy200768 If you plan to do a shitty job, that might be true. But if you practice and take your time you can do it. And you don' t have to buy tools. I rented the tile saw from R & R for $35 for the weekend.
So much for the Grid system. At 5.02 on the video the tile are out of line! No Tiler worth his salt does the grid system coz they are able to spot where to start with a few simple measurements and experience. Sometimes believe it or not when you tile and get out of shape you follow your eye and not use the level as a 100% marker.
@gazamc08 I used to be a tiler but went back to school and got a real job. Tilers normally don't do this grid technique. Just decide whether you need to do the 'center line' technique or not and lay it. Don't make it difficult because its not.
I'm a flooring specialist at HD with tiling experience- and I completely agree. It helps sometimes if you're dealing with weird shapes and such, but if you measure out your space and tiles then you'll figure out your cuts in your mind.
Do you really need to tile after you've put all those lines on the wall you already have a tile effect!!!! Simple rule to follow is datum line around the room and a centre line on each wall. Always lay from the centre out and you can't go far wrong
LMAO!!!! THAT'S WHAT I THOUGHT!!! He spent so much damn time drawing the lines, and when he goes to tile it, he's put mortar all over the lines so he can't see them anyway haha! I bet that clocked up a few hours of pay :P
Ummm.....maybe NO PROFESSIONALS tile like this, but this video was made for "do-it-yourselfers". I've been in the trades for almost 30 years and this seems like a good, helpful video to me and is not too very far off from what I see being done in the field every day. (I've never seen the "ledger board" trick before, but I can see how it might be helpful for a homeowner to use one) And, yes, tiling is messy!
This is retarded! NO ONE tiles like that. Total nonsense from start to finish. This is supposed to be from a reputable company in the US? Mind boggling.
Question for U Bob: If I wanted to tile my bathroom walls and the walls were already textured (sandy-type) would I need to remove the existing walls adding backer board, or could I just allow the mortar to make the existing wall smooth. Thanks Bob!
nah nah but remember this video is to prove to Americans that it is really damn hard to do it so instead of getting off your own ass! just call your local tiling lmao. (Could be a hidden message in this video) :P
There are definately people who can tile, but make sure that you look up the credentials. I come from 2 25 year vets of the tiling trade. BUT every video that I have watched on you tube there is some things wrong. this one, yes the home depot is retarded. all the home depot videos cannot be trusted. JUST GET A PROFESSIONAL.
ledger boards ar much faster. and the floor tile should be in first to follow the water flow so, if you use ledger boards you can get most of your wall on except for the last row and get the floor in the same day, come back the next day and set the bottom row and clean up leaving the last day for grout and a check...
Not every floor is level from the start, so using ledger board guarantees the STARTING row of tiles to be level. For example, the fixer-upper house that I bought had a floor that had been broken up to move a drain and they did NOT do a good job which resulted in an uneven floor. This video was a huge help but I do recommend looking up other tips/tricks as there isn't any one-stop shop for a DIY guy. If you want to spend way, way more $ - hire a professional.
I fell asleep after the first drawing of the line

DUDE, it cost around 500/650 euros to tile a 2M *3M bathroom (wall and floor) by an experienced pro. 1pro will do the job in 5/6 days
now let say you want to do the job your self: it will cost about 150/300 to buy tools , a novice may take him 8/10 days (full working days) .
now let just say you earn 650euros per week at your full time permanent job.
if it takes you 10 working days(2weeks) to do that bathroom that's a loss of earning cause normaly you earn 1300 for 2 weeks

I think it's so you can have a full tile on the top, as opposed to the bottom. Asthetic reasons I believe. I'm no expert though, just a thought.

ledger boards ar much faster. and the floor tile should be in first to follow the water flow so, if you use ledger boards you can get most of your wall on except for the last row and get the floor in the same day, come back the next day and set the bottom row and clean up leaving the last day for grout and a check...
