  • If the NRM has so much money to throw about how about un re-building a Bulleid merchant navy--then you might see a genuine attempt to up the world record---Sigh---at least I can dream!!

  • I saw her at york as re-built and thought she looked beautiful---now I think she is an abomination

Stanier only put the streamlining on to appease the publicity department and speaking to old enginemen I know from experience they much preffered them re-built---with the casing they were a nightmare to oil round------get it off---the sooner the better!

  • @bhyllsman The same case was in Poland after WW2. PKP aquired several streamlined 03.10 units from German Reichsbahn, assigning them as class Pm3. These locomotives were used for shorter time than their non-streamlined cousins, the Pm2 class (former German 03). Pm3's last assigment was to heat workshop halls, thus removing the casing. One eventually got preserved and had its streamlined case rebuilt.

  • I went outside at the National Railway Museum to have a cigarette. This University type of 'Ms' approached me and loudly exclaimed, "There is an ashtray the other side of that archway, this is a no smoking site". My reply was quite polite in the circumstances, I asked "What happens when you put your engines into steam????"

  • @Electron1944 cigarette??-don't you mean fag?

  • @Peter43John Being heterosexual, I don't have any use for 'FAGS'

  • A beautiful machine ta

  • Nice video. Yet to me this is an ugly piece of streamlining enhanced by a wonderful paint scheme. No wonder her designed much preferred the unstreamlined version.

  • n1 m8

  • I think they should attach it to mallards speed train and see if she could beat it. I genrally believe that the coronation class is faster!

  • Whats the song on the vid?

  • @kingmush3602 It's called 'Coronation Scot' written by Vivien Ellis and used extensively on BBC for their 'Paul Temple' series in the 50's and 60's.

  • i went on this engine as a kid when she was at butlins in minehead somerset . you can still see her there on the end of the video. butlins minehead 24-31 may 1969 .i believe the small engine is in steam somewhere.

  • do u know why its called a coronation class? well, the 1st train in the class, no.6220, was actually called coronation! nice vid. im definitely going to the nrm again soon-i havent been for 4 years!

  • WOW! Such a beautiful train. I love the paintjob. Great vid! Hopefully we can have the Duchess and Mallard steaming again. NEVER SAY NEVER!

  • Holy Streamline Batman - Thats one beautiful looking loco!

Cant wait to see this out on the mainline, its fab!!!

    Rob

  • Sadly, there are no plans at the moment to steam her, the last time she did was in March 1998, so a full overhaul is required. But in the railway preservation movement, you can never say 'never', after all, it was said that an A1 could never be built from scratch in this day and age!

The Duchess is stunning, get to the NRM if you can and have a good long look!

    Thanks

    J

  • Thanks for the info - Im not well up on the steam scene but I know a sexy loco when I see her! Lets hope its a case of never say never.

As for visiting York - NRM is always worth a visit now even more so!

    Rob

  • @Jaymzhatstand Just read yesterday that the director of the NRM is quoted as saying the Hamilton will steam sooner than expected, and possibly with an entire rake of coaches in the same livery.

  • @Jaymzhatstand WHAT YEAR WAS SHE IN SERVICE? AND WILL MALLARD EVER STEAM AGAIN?

  • Wow! I think I'm in love!

  • Cheers! I didn't see her out on the mainline though, sadly!

  • 5***** still prefer my shots though =P
