The legs can actually be simplified, while keeping the same motion, to make the entire thing lighter for motorizing. I'm playing with the same mechanism right now.
I tried it with Power Function motors but it didn't work. I would make some changes before motorized it, and at this momment I'm building and programing anothers projects.
You should shorten the distance from the rotating axle in centre to the end of the chassis. That will make it work much better. The rotating axle in the middle shall turn the same way as the movement. Yours rotates the opposite direction.
I never knew that could make a difference. I've made virtual models, of the mechanism, and never experienced what you describe, where the axle rotates the same direction as the movement of the entire thing... i shall have to try that.
