I tried the 20 rep squats (breathing squats) once a few years back, all I remember is my legs were nowhere near failure but my lower back was ready to collapse having held that weight on my shoulders for so long, I heard you're suppose to start with a weight you can do relatively easily at first and just add 5 lbs every time, think I could get through it if I did that? Has anyone had a similar experience with 20 rep squats?
@gymguy25 Yes, my 1RM is 405, my 5RM is 365, but I have an incredibly hard time getting more than 250 x 20. Something that worked well for me with breathing squats is, like you said, pick a super easy weight, say, 70-75% of your 10RM, since with breathing squats you'll ideally be able to take your 10RM and use the breathing and the extra rest to eek out 10 more, then just add 5's every week. Or every workout rather, since if you're doing widowmaker sets you're probably squatting 2-3 times a week
this is an old video yes? but still, the 20 rep squat should be a little more taxing. Ive done it starting with 185 working up to 220 lbs, not too strong at the time, but i damn near threw up...in a family fitness, that would've been embarrassing heh
yes this is from last year around this time, I had been wrestling prior to starting this cycle so i was already in incredible aerobic shape, reps over 12 are considered to be very aerobically taxing opposed to lower reps that are anaerobic. also this is the last set in a six weeks cycle of three squat sessions per week.
@papawebs49 or jesse was so unfit it was unreal (and apparantly hes did load of other excercises before hand btw 405 for 20 taking 4 mins was lllaaaammmeeee for one of the worlds strongest men
no most of the stress is put on the glutes and hamstrings. A wider stance, shins perpendicular to the floor, and sitting back will put on the low end stress on the posterior chain and the lockout will be quads. I squat this way because of a knee issue and squatting wide doesnt cause inflamation
sumo squats are less taxing(smaller range of motion. jese mirunde did standterd deep squats. still very impressive though!

Is that suppose to be impressive, doing 1/2 squats on a smith machine.

check out the late jesse marunde's
407 squat for 20 reps video on youtube.
when he is done,he falls to the ground gasping
for breath.
after your 365 for 20 reps, you rack it and
walk away like a day in the park.
either you are superior to jesse or your
form sucks to allow for more reps.
what do you think ?

If you narrow your stance, you will hit your quads more. Right now, your abductors are doing most of the work. Cheers!!!
