  • Older people grew up with the word Negro. I remember my grandma saying that there was a colored person who moved in next door who she really likes. It is not right for our generation to use the word negro because we didn't grow up with it and it takes more effort for me to say the word negro than it does to say black or african american. But older people get to use it because it is part of their world, they grew up with it, and it would take more effort for them to try and change how they talk.

  • There's nothing wrong with saying "Negro" or "black"... it's the context of the words you say that matter.

  • There is nothing wong with calling them negros. We are called whites because we are intelligent. My great Grandmother said they had negros working on the farm and liked to be called that.

  • whats wrong with "negro" it means black in spanish?

  • Andy Rooney was born in 1919, just be thankful he didn't go around wearing a white hood, anyway he's dead now

  • It's great to be...one word...Latino! Puerto Rican is also okay, ' cause after all, I was BORN in Puerto Rico. Puerto Rican-American? That's ridiculous and way too long. Now, why African-American? Unless you were born in Africa, it just seems absurd. But if that's what some want to be called, cool with me too. "Blacks" is what I grew up with and that's probably what I'll always use, and not trying to offend anyone, nor a derogatory hit on your skin color. American is always best!

  • @WP4KTF Good man. These damn retards who value some obscure attempt at ethnic identity over being an American is a cancer on the soul of this country and should be drowned in chemo juice immediately.

  • andy, is a atheist.

  • I agree with Rooney! I refer to the black community as either blacks or negros.

  • Negro comes from the Latin word for black.

Negro being the modern version, in use in Spanish Italiano and Portuguese, where as niger was the latin original, thusly you have the countries Nigeria ,Niger, river Niger etc.

On the contrary Blanco means white, ironically.

Of course the historical connotation make the use of the world inappropriate.

One only wishes that African Americans themselves would stop using it and promoting, before demanding everyone else to keep it away from their mouths.

  • That DJ dressed as John Wayne looked like he was holding on for dear life not to let rip with a monster of a fart , he probably knew if he farted his bowel would give way and would follow through leaving a steaming runny pile of crap in his pants . But it looked like he came out of it skid free and was able to continue the show .

  • whats with the cowboy

  • THANK GOD THAT OLD S.O.B IS DEAD. ROT IN HELL YOU OLD PIECE OF SHIT.

  • @esahali2001 You nasty vindictive cunt.Andy Rooney was a great American and a true individualist. The world is a duller place with his departure.

  • @esahali2001 fuck u hoe, maybe u should die soon always and u rot in hell you piece of white trash shit

  • This is funny because he was talking to Don Imus. "So what should I call them? Is 'nappy headed hoes' an appropriate term?"

    RIP Andy

  • He's not racist, it's just his generation. My grandpa, who is 87, would refer to blacks as negros every once in a while. He also refers to any asians as chinamen. Its just the way he was raised, just like were raised to say african american.

  • Rest in Peace Andy. You're one of the Greatest!

African American, Negro, Black, Black American. I consider myself African American. But my (no deceased) Aunt, would call us "Negro". Not sure what it truly meant, but when she used it, it was to get an immediate response. "Negro go out to the car and get my cigarettes." I consider it slang, i.e. You. She didn't care what color you belonged to. So that there confused me as a kid too.

I do not consider it negative.

  • Okay, I love me some Andy Rooney, but who is he to tell Blacks what we should call ourselves? We didn't have the option of not be referring to as "niggers", but yet that's what we were called. I once had a elderly gent refer to me as a "Nigeress", did I like it hell to the NO. But because of his age, I ignored it. Ageism is no excuse for ignorance in this day and time.

  • @JazzyJZ52 ummmmm he's not telling blacks what to call themselves, he's discussing different terminologies for "black people" with the host. He doesn't come off as ignorant at all. You on the other hand...

  • @JazzyJZ52 true!

  • Rooney ain't no racist, he's just old.

Old people are usually not so fucking desperate to seem political correct all the time.

  • He said it best at he end of the clip: I don't think we need to refer to people by their skin color.

  • Actually, the plural of negro is negroes. Yes, with an E.

  • I am brazilian and in portuguese, "negro" is actually the politically correct word. If you say black ("preto") it is offensive.

I think andy was pointing out that the root of this word had nothing of bad... It is the latin "niger". The country Nigeria is named after that same root.

Andy is not a racist at all, he actually fought racism...

  • the correct way to write it is "Negro" not "Negroes"

  • @abelpower ?

  • @aarossell Negro means 'Black' in Spanish

  • @abelpower I know, but I didn't know it was wrong to pluralize it.

  • @aarossell The plural of Negro is Negros

  • @abelpower great. So were you trying to say, "...correct way to write it is "Negros" not "Negroes""

  • @aarossell Yes that´s right sorry for my bad english

  • A lot of people know the correct word to say, but in their mind are still thinking "n****r."

  • RITE ON ANDY TELL IT LIKE IT IS LOVE TO WATCH YOU

  • I enjoy eating food.

  • what is wrong with you people??

it's the name of their race, it's like white people being offended if someone call them Caucasoid or an East Asian/American indigenous if someone call them mongoloid.

  • @asabovesobelow90 it is a lot more complex than that. I am sure you have met the Asian girl who looks black or the white guy who looks Asian before. human features and traits do not differentiate enough for categorization by race which is why that method was discarded.

  • @mamushi72sai5575 that's because of the wonderful idea of race mixing. a pure blood negro and a pure blood mongoloid have completely different facial features. Nature made beautiful different races, mankind destroyed that.

  • @asabovesobelow90 as mixed Caucasoid mongoloid I think the people in here are jealous.

  • Niggra is an appropriate usage for the word negro. Well sure, folks around my parts use niggra all the time; even niggras say niggria, come arand hea.

  • Heh, "Nigger" was still a politically correct word in Finland during 90's,

then someone got butthurt over it~

  • Spanish word for black.

  • For those who have a hard-on for using "The N-Word," and think it's clever or irreverent to type it on your keyboard, here's a rule to remember: if you can walk the path, get hassled by cops, get followed in stores, get underestimated in class by your teacher, have people walk across the street away from you at night out of fear, or have taxi cabs pass you by when you have the cash to pay, then you have the right to use "The N-Word." But if you use it casually - you're an idiot.

  • @cqtaylor yes, if you have the highst crime rate(hassled by cops), the highest theft rate(followed in stores), lowest avg. IQ's(underestimated in class), highest assault rates(even Jesse Jackson said he doesn't like blacks walking behind him at night), African taxi-cab drivers pass up blacks!(it's a result of their experience, not racist), you have probably earned the right to be called "The N-Word".

  • I'm black and i agree with what he said

  • @jerryumeh1 why would you agree???? negro means black, and he said "it's not apropriate to name people by their skin color."

  • @jerryumeh1 appropriate*

  • @jerryumeh1 In 1999, the jazz department at Stanford University played Duke Ellington's "jazz symphony" titled "Black, Brown and Beige." The narrator and featured singer was the GREAT Joe Williams. Wow. Anyway, he read Ellington's description of the work. It included the phrase, ""a tone parallel to the history of the Negro in America." Williams paused, looked up and said, amused, "WHEN were we calling ourselves that?" To him, it sounded like a quaint historic word. No big deal, but dated.

  • Niggers

  • United NEGRO College Fund.

National Association for the Advancement of COLORED People.

This is just one of those words, like "Nigger", that it's perfectly OK for them to use to describe each other...but they'll have a shit-fit if a White person uses it. It's just another racial double-standard we've unfortunately started to accept.

  • @bullconnor1488 Not only are you a closet-racist....you're full-of-shit too.

  • Comment removed

  • @bullconnor1488 Had your ancestor's chose not to enslave the African race, this would'nt be an issue today..LIVE WITH IT FUKKER!

  • @beloit22 EVERYONE was a slave at some point in history. You aboriginal animals can't or WON'T get up off your sorry black asses and improve yourselves LIKE WHITE PEOPLE HAVE DONE for centuries.

You make me sick and because of your stupidity, I shall call one of your kind an insulting name and deny him or her some service tomorrow.

There, you have just caused pain upon your beloved spook brothers and sisters through your blind stupidity.

  • @nomorespooks3 lmao, You Reap-What-You-Sow...Bro!

  • @beloit22 Really? Then why does the government keep rewarding spooks for their terrible behavior?

  • @nomorespooks3

it's so easy to tell a miserable, ugly loser by reading his stupid hateful comments. I don't know you personally, but I can already tell a lot of people who know you don't like you.

  • @nomorespooks3 lol burn and hang all spooks!

  • negro is not "a word people used to call each other way back" negro and negroid are a scientific terms used to id a specific group pf humans (caucaziod for white folk, mongoloid for asian folk). calling a person african-american assumes i know the black persons nationality, how would i know that just by looking?

  • @jerome445 No, using the word "Negro" didn't save Martin Luther King Jr. or Malcolm X from dying violent deaths. It was just a word they used to refer to black people, as did most people at that time.

  • Need to call us Daddy . Cause we gave your spoiled asses life , now we are getting a lil older and easily fell for your clever mind games , like all kids play . Now looking at you . Cause you forgot there is nothing new under the sun ,your idiots-asses done ran right into the arms of the devil himself .

    Remember call us DADDY

  • NIggers call each other niggers all the time. So WTF?!

  • @Nutbustin1 ,and you can't in the presence of your Daddy .

  • This whole conversation stems from the truth that, Nelson Mandela, like other

African Blacks, feels insulted calling U.S. Blacks "African American". Kenya doesn't want US negroes back....Nigeria doesn't want them..South Africa doesn't want them...."All they do is complain about white-supremacists who started all the factories' & wealth to begin with"...and US blacks want handouts & stimulus checks from them. "African American" has never existed.

  • @SuperVcarroll Fu(k Nelson Mandela and all the other maggots you just mentioned if thats the case . They feel we should have some gratitude for been your house nigger and they would a better job. At the same time the devil can go there and whisper in their ear that their neighbors are cockroaches and needs to die. Done deal. So that stem of truth , will be dealt with when the Real Overseers roll back in town .

  • Malcolm X and MLK Jr. used the word "negro" all the time. That's what was used back then. It's just a word.

  • @mikecallaghan , did that save them from a violent death .

  • @mikecallaghan whatever you say CRACKER MUTHAFUCKA

  • He can call me negro if I can call him senile.

Maybe he can call himself negro if he likes it so much.

  • Im white... Your black.... Get over it

  • @pissant911 That's the problem you will never get over your superiority complex.

  • I never hear whites calling themselves European-Americans.

  • imus probably has another n-word in mind

  • Of course you don't see anything wrong with an 'n' word variant, Andy, 'cos you're also a fascist who thinks we should all be chipped in the name of security. Go back to the bunker, you senile old nazi.

  • this is the dumbest video ever.

  • @forgottenrebel88

Actually no. Andy stopped the interview because he thought Ali G was wasting his time. It had nothing to do with the color of anyone's skin.

  • I rather be Black or Negro rather than Black American and especially African American.

  • who wants to shoot Andy in the foot? Like? :P

if you just wanna knock him into hospital... double like?

if you want to put him in a catapult and watch him fly in the air screaming, then smack on the ground, breaking most things in his body (yes, including his mouth)... well, unfortunately I haven't got that video >,<

  • Thank you for the continued humiliation of conservatives.

  • Oh my he said negro... guess what SO DOES EVERYONE else who isnt a white guilty scumbag politician trying to gain votes.

Ask our youth if they say negro... and they'll laugh and call you a Nigga

    PC police at it again.

  • What's wrong with "AMERICAN". If you were born here, went through the hoops to become a citizen here, then you are an American. If you came from somewhere else, fine. We are so diluted and divided that it's even thought to be offensive to be caled American. It's FREAKIN' rediculous.

  • if this dj and andy were to hook up they could call their elves the shar pei brothers

  • lol what the fuck.. this is the kind of random shit they would talk about on his show? they both sound like they're reallly really tired...

  • the other day, my grandmother was talking about a haitian woman who helped her at jfk. she told me that haitians look just black people.

calling every black person in the us an "african american" is just stupid, and in many cases incorrect. there are actually many countries that have black folks.

  • People feel unconformable saying Negro because sounds too much like Nigger.

  • A long time ago, "negro" was the politically correct term. Then some people turned it to "nigger", which is obviously considered racist. Then it became politically correct to say "black". But now it's racist too. Now only "African American" is a proper term. What do they call blacks in other countries? African French? African German? African Pakistani?

  • @semisanity there is an episoide of star trek when an alien that thinks he is abraham lincoln says my what a charming negress DWB is a police radio code for driveing while black which is racial profileing they are not suppose to do that but they do it sometimes like in the rodney king beating

  • nice video description. You isolate a sound segment to make a 91 year old man sound racist while simultaneously cutting it off right as he is about to make his point. Kettenring, go suck a big, fat, Mark Foley pageboy cock.

  • @waterboy4453 thats the best comment ive ever read. Waterboy: you are my hero. Whoever wrote the description just isolated everything.

  • @waterboy4453 Without the language I basically agree.

  • Blacks always use that f@kn race cards,

Damn cry babys!! they call whites "crakers",

Browns" esay". Oh but u say negro oh ur a racist bitch plz.

  • @neveralone. Please get me the current Pc book. I don't want to offend coffee. Lol

  • I think we all know who is the racist in the video. Hint. It's not Andy.

  • Negro is just spanish for black.

  • Negro is offensive. How about we say dark chocolate mocha frapachino!!!!!

  • @Snickbud Well, we might be thinking you're talking about coffee.

  • Screw P.C. My generation says black. I'll say it when I'm 90 when it's considered "racist" by then. Modern society is ridiculous. There's too much propaganda from the elite these days trying to tell us how to behave, what to think, and what to say. TV is a median for such nonsense too.

  • well, i don't think that the term "negro" was a pejorative, was it? I mean it's politically incorrect now, but, originally, it wasn't the same as saying "nigger" or any other racial slur i don't think. Ditto the term "colored".

  • Why the hell did you use an exclamation point? He said negro not nigger, so who the fuck cares

  • The word African American is retarded because it assumes two things.

    1. That all blacks are from Africa

    2. That all blacks are American.

And black people can be racist too. Calling a white person 'cracker' is racist, so it can go both ways.

  • @TheAngryOtaku Youre so stupid, guy.

Black people are from Africa, originally, anyway.

If a black guy isnt American, then hes African or Haitian or Dominican. Nobody calls blacks in Brazil African Americans, so wtf are you talking about?

And of course racism goes both ways. So what? Does that mean we should allow it? Whats your point?

At any rate, the discrimination by whites toward blacks has been a lot more prominent than any other kind of racism in the US.

    Quit bein a douche.

  • @HalfricanItalian So I am stupid because I pointed out that everyone can be racist.

Saying to someone 'you dance like a white girl' is racist. Calling someone a 'white boy' is racist. Everyone is from Africa, we all originated there asshole. I didn't say we should allow it, I was saying that blaming one race for everything is wrong and racist.

Pull your head out of your ass.

  • Andy Rooney is not a racist. Everyone, including black folks in his generation used "negro." The issue is that people give power and meaning to words, which is why "gay" no longer means happy, and why negro is now a derogatory word. So just keep in mind what words meant in the different generations.

  • for once I agree with Andy Rooney! LOL

  • break*

  • @johnxpaulxmusic Andy Rooney needs to shut the fuck up! He also told everyone to get a chip in their body so they would be safe from the terrorists, give me a fucking brake this guy is a joke!

  • I'm not a fan of the term "African-American", but it's annoying to hear other white people complain about it. Very few black people still use it. It was a 90s fad.

  • Its really easy....ready...ask the person their name and then call them that! Wow that was hard. LOL

  • @19drivenbyblood86 There are names and there are demographics.

  • doesnt even sound like him

  • NEGROES?! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

    WACIST!

  • You know your right lets not beat around the bush cracker! I bet you would never come to my old neighborhood talking that shit! Because you don't have the balls to say what you really in front of people you wish you were like. So whatever you rasist cracker motherfucker!

  • You know your right lets not beat around the bush cracker!

  • when i was a kid, we had a name for a man who cried about how much a name hurt him

    "Pussy"

  • no other group has ever had to keep changing their name, like african americans (or whateer the heck they're called now) have

it's because whatever name they come up with, gets a stigma, and they want a new one

whatever the next name thiey pick is, i guarantee it will eventually get a stigma

perhaps they should change the way they act, instead

  • I just call them whiners, baaawhawers or over sensitive people. I like to call people for what they are and not for what they look like = )

    <3

  • Negro was the Proper word for Martin Luther King, If Its good for him it's good for me.

  • I just say "nigger." No beatin' around the bush there.

  • I prefer the one syllable word black. Negro is my second favorite because in spanish it means black. I think darkie is OK but it seems to piss of the victim game players and I hate their stupid ninnying.

  • negro is totally right.....africanamerican is a joke

  • The funny thing is, why are they even talking about this? Who gives a crap? LOL. I could understand black people debating this issue because they are directly affected by it(Which I don't understand either) but it would make more sense than two white guys debating this meaningless topic that has nothing to do with them.

  • @DoNotBeHighandMighty It does have to do with them if they are called in to question or defamed for saying something....

  • @whomejohn

Yeah, but you will be called into question or defamed for saying a "racist" word. Now if the other person knows what your intentions are and you mean good than obviously you won't be questioned or defamed.

  • @whomejohn

You can say, "it is just a word" all you want. But it isn't "just a word" if you intend to use it in harmful ways that invoke anger in other people.

  • @DoNotBeHighandMighty Well, I don't believe that Andy Rooney uses it to invoke anger and I don't use the word at all. My reply was to your thought that he had no reason to discuss the matter. If he is going to be held accountable for his choice of words, he should be able to question why. If a word that had been used respectfully by this man for 90+ years has been replaced by a name that really makes no sense, he should be able to object. My black friends don't say African-American....

  • @whomejohn

Yeah yeah, again it is "meaningless." A stupid meaningless conversation. I can't use this word without being ridiculed boo hoo. Who gives a crap, do you really even need to use the word in the first place?

  • @whomejohn

Words are just words, "intent" is what matters. Because if you "intend" to piss retards off, they will get pissed. And I don't say "retards" meaning "black people." I am talking about retards meaning people of lower intelligence and they are in all races.

  • @whomejohn

Nobody is stopping anybody from using the words. You can go up to a gang of black people on a dark street and say "what's up N****R" and see what happens. Nobody will stop you from saying it, but there may be consequences.

  • Black people call themselves niggas in all the best rap vids, so what be wrong with this?

  • Black African Negro American is what I prefer.

  • Not everyone who uses the word "negro" to describe a black man is a rascist, nor does he/she hate people simply because he/she uses "negro" to describe black (African-American) people. I've used the word many times in the past, particularly in front of black friends of mine.

  • HA! Imus is all "Oh hell, I'm not touching that one. Not again!"

They're adding "negro" back to the census forms, by the way, because that's the term older black folks are familiar with.

  • All white Americans should be referred to as "European Americans", as long as black Americans are referred to as "African Americans.

But if white Americans are the only real Americans, even though people of different colour have been there even before the Europeans found America, then White America is extremely racist.

  • @sinbysin666 Bingo! you hit that one on the nail.

  • Negro isn't racist, nigger is.

  • wow what an evil man. I bet he's actually the grand wizard of the KKK. Especially that last comment: "It's not necessary to identify anyone by skin colour" FASCIST!!

    VOTE REPUBLICAN!!! WE call'em NIGGERS!

  • negro means black you ignorant retards. stop trying to make something out of nothing.

  • People say African American because black people get so easily offended by any name you pretty much have to try your hardest not to offend them. If we asked them to call us European Americans..... they would just laugh.

  • fuck this guy

  • Come again you shrivel bish?

  • Well, Andy Rooney is an old cracka honkey.

  • People should stop referring black people as African-American. Heather Locklear for example is African-American (South Africa), but she's white. Another example would technically be an American with Egyptian ancestry that could be also called African-American--but most probably have more Arab genes, than black.

  • negro, nigger, porch monkey, coon, all the same to me

  • Yeah, negros. wtf? negro means some1 who's ancestors are from africa. Whats wrong with that?

  • niggers

  • This guy is ignorant - people dont like being called negro because it has its root in a scientific racial category... negroid. To call people negroes is to label people by their genetic makeup. if you call african americans blacks or negros then an irish american should be referred to as white or caucasian.

  • @lithfrasir Thats exactly what he's saying you fucking idiot

  • @lithfrasir but aren't they negroes? In spanish Negro means black.

  • Racist!

  • blax ok

  • to explain the last coment the first era klan did Alot of night rides an stuff an the paintings of it look mysterios an dark

  • though some pepole use it for ass hole poser's an Idoit's for example I would call the moderen era ku klux klan that because I have A some what negitive opionon of them although I Kind of like the imagery of the first era klan though I want get in to that.

  • I know I'm going to get A shit load of hate mail for this but sceintist actuly do call black pepole negroid

an negro is A short verzion of the word negroid

an the orther I'm not even gona try an get it is sort for that word but because slave master's an orther ass hole's used it it's seen as A negitive word

  • Yeah, but Ali G was a little annoying to the old man with the way he was talking as well.

  • Andy Rooney is a very very old racialist full of hate man. i loved ur scenario Kijinn , it embodies wut the african american race went through in america. I lived in america for 7 years and one thing i never understood about americans is they seem to be very naive when it comes to sensing others' intentions behind words. Rooney doesn't have to say n***** for u to sense how racialist he is.just listen to the tone of his exchange and response by don"bastard"imus between 00:11 and 00:18,RACIALIST!

  • well hes like 100 years old what do u expect

  • Bottom line is that it's a word and if some people find it offensive then it's offensive.

  • How is this racist? Use logic everyone. Negro was a perfectly acceptable word during Andys life. Don't believe me? How about the United Negro College Fund. Still in existence. Political correctness has run amuck. Most of the black people I know were not born in Africa nor have ever been there, thus, they should not be called African Americans.

  • @fletchdrebon

    Let's have this theoretical scenario:

Someone kidnaps you, locks you into a cage, beats you up, rapes you, spits on you, tortures you, humiliates and taunts you. He does that for 1 year, every day. And during all that, he always calls you "Blanco", while doing any of the aforementioned.

After 1 year, people free you, and as you return home, all your relatives and friends start calling you "Blanco".

What do you think would you associate with the term "blanco", by that time?

  • @Kijinn

There is not one black person alive today that was alive during the american slave trade. Your argument is shit.

  • @Jascene

Your comment surprises me. Seemingly, you know next to nothing about how African Americans were treated before the Civil Rights Movement.

    Read it up!

The hatred and prejudice towards them last to this day, although their rights have improved a lot. And you are suggesting white people should be allowed to call them by a name again, that was used for hundreds of years of slavery and abuse? Because the African Americans who received the abuse don't live anymore?

    Are you sane?

  • @Kijinn True. It's like since Lincoln abolished slavery Euro-American people have smoother, much less prounounced hatred toward the African American race.

  • @Jascene THANKYOU, this guy tries the smart shit when he's blatently on microsoft word chopping and changing words that he's never smart enough to actually use.

  • Daisey Bailey was damn close

  • @fletchdrebon

Additionally, "African American" is not used to refer to the birthplace, but to the ancestry.

If "African American" is the best applicable term still is arguable...but your argument is pointless.

  • @Kijinn technically everyone of every race originated from africa so by calling someone an african american, you could reffer to ANY american.

  • @nigglattokids95

Your remark is correct by content, but it's still just a smartypants comment, wouldn't you agree?

Is your perception that any Asian, Hispanic or white American feels adressed to, when called "African American"?

You will be hard-pressed to find a single person who'd misunderstand the term "African American", despite its imprecision regarding the history of mankind.

Can you think of a term that is more appropriate and does not hurt feelings?

  • @Kijinn BLACK, thats the correct term for a BLACK person, same as a WHITE person is called a "WHITE person" we don't call you ethnic majorities and shit like that and some people find it offensive too be called an african american, and i beg you get of microsoft word. seriously chopping and changing words that you never use while talking too your friends

  • @nigglattokids95

True. Some people consider it offensive to be called "African American".

Some consider it offensive to be called "Black American".

I'd feel happier about a term that doesn't hurt anyone's feelings.

Regarding my use of the English language, open your mind a little, please.

English is not my native language. No program interferes with what I'm typing.

No translator and no corrections involved. This is just how I express myself in English.

Beg your pardon, if it irritates you.

  • @Kijinn haha your moist, we're not in the 40's you can speak normaly, bt you a grand you don't speak like that in real life, if you do i feel sory for you, bless bet you had no friends in school, yo probably thought you where better than everyone else, btw i've just noticed, you've been arguing 4 3 days and still knowone agree's with you, jeez you have time on your hands.

  • racist piece of shit

  • "It's not necessary to identify anyone by skin color"...unless you are Harry Reid or are aiding in filing a police report.
