  • Beautiful song!

    Here's what it is about if anyone's interested. Its a cantiga de Santa Maria, Galican-Portuguese poems praising miracles of the Virgin Mary, this one praises this miracle........

  • During the renovation of a church in Germany, a statue of the Virgin was moved temporarily from the altar to a portico in the town square.

  • Some young men were playing ball in the square. One of the youths was wearing a ring given to him by his beloved. Thinking the ball could damage it; he put it on the finger of the statue for safekeeping. Kneeling before the statue, he placed the ring on its finger. He promised the Virgin that he would never love another lady, and that he would be faithful to her.

    The statue closed its finger around the ring, and the people seeing this, advised the young man to join the Cistercian Order.

  • He disregarded his promise to the Virgin and married his girlfriend.

    On his wedding night, as he was lying in bed, the Virgin appeared to him and rebuked him for being unfaithful to her.

    The bridegroom would not leave his bride, so the Virgin lay down on the bed, and separated him from his wife. She demanded that he leave at once.

  • He was so frightened that he got up at once, and wandered through the wilderness for a month. Later, he lived as a hermit in a grove of pine trees and served the Virgin.

    ~~~~~~~~~~
    This is from the Oxford Cantigas de Santa Maria database, none of it is my work, but theirs. :)
  • Nice story, but why does it tell about a story that ocurred in Germany when it's actually from the database of the Cantigas De Santa Maria?
  • @Gewaldro -Because the story occured in Germany. If you hear the first words of the song, after
    "A virgen mui groriosa reina espirital dos que ama e ceosa ca non quer que facan mal"
    She sings "Foi a l'interra an allmagne qu qeuar a renovar" Which means "Once in the world, in Germany there was a church rennovation." The story of the Most Glorious Virgin takes place in Germany, where the story says the Virgin saved a man from hell by keeping him true to his promise.
  • @Gewaldro Part 2: You see cause, the Cantiagas de Santa Maria, "Canticles of the Virgin Mary" praise Santa Maria's miracles everywhere. There are over 400 cantigas, this is cantiga 41 I believe. They're in Medieval Galican because Alfonso el Sabio, the King of Spain back then, had them written it it. Medieval Galican was the lanuage of music in Medieval Spain.
  • Interestingly, the Visigoths (who would later become the Christian kings of Leon-Castille, Galicia and Aragon) were originally from Germany. It might be that "Germania" had some mystical meaning for them
  • @Elphir not only kings of christendom were visigoth descendant even caliphs. Visigoth were a true invasion, near 250.000 crossed the pyrenees of both sexs. Muslim were only a men only military expedition but many anti-catholics arians coverted to islam, visigoths mainly, hispano-romans stayed catholics
  • @iSPaLiTo Muslims invaders came in Spain in a huge number, especially Berbers.
  • @Almanzzor not so huge, and they were massacred by islam elites for some riots and replaced by slavics in a huge number... there were somes berbers settlement near Granada. Mostly people from Andalus were muladies (hispanics muslim, wisigoths and romans)
  • @iSPaLiTo At least 100 000 Arabs and Berbers settled in Al Andalus. Given their social status and traditions, their number must have increased a lot during centuries. Therefore it is impossible that all Arabs and Berbers were massacred, and probably as many muladies were killed. In the 10th century, Slavs (Saqaliba) AND new Berber immigrants replaced old Arabs and old Berbers in the army. Not in the total population. But yes, it is obvious that most of Andalusis were of Iberian blood.
  • @Gewaldro German = Germanos = Hermanos = Irmaos = Brothers.
  • @yasmine1the1moor Thank you very much for bringing the story! Very very interesting!
  • It is the best!
  • Simply magnificent.  I'm looking up this group for music purchase as I listen to this!
  • The best song ever, seriously.
