The SFAM is also way too smooth, it has no real detail to it, where-as the SNES had these nice angles that really fit with the sort of commercial art design you would see at the time.
I got the SNES for Christmas 1992. I was given the SNES, Super Mario World, Mario Paint, Street Fighter 2, Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past (abbreviating it cheapens the game) and the Super Scope 6 bundle. I love this system, hands down the greatest ever, I firmly believe people still follow Nintendo because of this. Also, we have the Playstation because of this. It was supposed to be an add-on for the SNES like the Sega CD was. This is quite possibly the best console ever.
i think you've fallen victim to first come first love. the famicom system looks dated, like an old betamax player. the snes looked more modern for the time
I don`t know I kinda like the SNES design better. Could be that it`s connected to fond memories, but I also just feel like the color scheme is balanced better, and I just really like how the power and reset buttons just slide right along that ridge on the top of it.
i have to say,i love the design for the Super Famicom.curvy is sweet, and the buttons on the controller are cool too.i don't exactly dislike the purple buttons on the SNES,but i have to say the square box design is worse.myself,i never got to play on the famicom.i was totally new to gaming back then and i was like 7 when i played Super mario world for the first time.i couldn't possibly have known about japanese products at the time
Yeah I'm partial to the Super Famicom's design personally, even though the only model I have is still the Snes-mini. Need to get my hands on an SF someday.
Damn though... that story about Super Mario World made me so jealous. =( I have no nostalgia for that game, and only played it for the first time about a year ago. Kinda bummed out about that.
i like the super famicom design better, seems like japan always gets the better and exclusives of video games not just in consoles but in games , everytime you see an awesome game like castlevania rondo of blood for the pcengine its only for japan and its long history , i could list alot more but you ghot google for that

so i don't understand why change the model for the us launch but like one of the guys said video games companies mentalaty was bigger is better, and more thing video game companies don't realize how important and succesful european a launch for video game system is they always pay more attention to japan and the usa.
I grew up with the clunky SNES design, so I really remember it fondly. But I have to admit, that from a straight forward design perspective, the Super Famicon is a lot nicer looking. Either way, it was and still is one of the best gaming consoles of all time. SMW, FF6, ChrTrg, Earthbound, FZero, LttP, MMX, UN Squadron, Yoshi's Island, MarioRPG, Goemon, Pocky, etc. the list goes on and on and on and on... This device left a lasting impression on my life and I couldn't be more happy about that!
im from Australia and had a super nintendo. But it is exactly the same as the super famicon just titled the super nintendo the first time i saw the north american version was on th net different look same name as the aussie version
@khmercripster Europe has that too. I think It wasn't the bigger the better for the american console. But it just had to look more like a toy in the U.S. And be different.
one great game on the SNES that never got much attention was Super Turrican, i heard Turrican was an awesome game on the Commondore 64 and all, and my heart jumped when they released a Turrican game on the SNES the graphics and gameplay were great
The difference between the European PAL-version and the super famicom was that PAL was 50Hz (black borders and slowdowns!) instead of 60Hz and the PAL-version also had a huge uppercase italic SUPER NINTENDO logo. I couldn't afford one back then. I bought a super famicom in Japan several years ago. The design is beautiful. The US-version looks awful. I really couldn't stand it. When I first saw the US version, I thought it was an april fools troll.
I remember the day my brother got the Super Nintendo (PAL version) it was that box that included Super Mario All-Star it was one of the greatest consoles ever, later that year I recived both Street Fighter 2 The world champion and Bart's Nightmare it was a blast. So for nostalgic reasons I'd pick the Super Famicom design anytime since the US version doesn't look too good.
Funny is i allways owned the SNES and at one time i played with a friend on "his" american Famicon , which simply looked for me as a "chinese" rip off SNES.
And i was happy to be back with my SNES and the colored buttons ; felt better.
by far both excellent systems of their time. the only odd thing with the north american super nintendo was the discoloring that occured in the plastic
We were lucky to get this in Europe, still it has to be said the US has better cover art on games than we get (though not as good as Japan) and also more exclusives generally. I really prefer the Japanese design, it looked great.
i think, but i cant remember but i think i got the famicom design and i live in Australia....or maybe it was the SNES. Someone help which console was launced in Aus.
and the genesis had the sucky version of zombies ate my nieghbors and top gear 2 god awful audio also rock n roll racing as well plus the color palate of the later was way off
@Egames101 well.. most people just dont care for pal released stuff : iam glad that we in europe got the jap designed snes but just for an example of great pal games on the snes : Winter Gold ( used the super fx2 chip and had amazing graphics cause of that + good gameplay and kick ass music ) and : lucky lucke / asterix and obelix it are great games but i dont think they were that popular outside europe
i just logged out of battlefield so pissed off having some really bad rounds where nothing worked out, desided to get in better mood and opend up youtube, i see you guys and you where jealous of our design, and that made me happy :) i'm from norway and we got the famicom design, i gotta admit i liked our design better at the time, but your's is cool and mashine lookin, and you got better cpu in urs, so better fps, ours where slowed down when compared. i have since bought a us version,it's sweet!
the snes looks to kiddie for my liking, slap on a fisher price logo and sell it qt toys r us, the japanies/european one looks better, i wouldnt say it doesnt look a little fisher price but it does look like a little more serious
The colored buttons on the super famicom controller look way cooler. I like the super famicom the best. But I do remember playing super nintendo with my best friend.
@SitarKnight wow sad, snes had zelda, metroid, mario, donkey kong country, and fighting games had better sound and gfx then the gensis ver. Chrono trigger was amazing also
The famicom is sooo ugly! lol Thank God they changed it. I don't want some colorful controller that looks like it should be plugged into a kids V-tech plug n play. And the console change was good too! The non ntsc versions looked bland and boring! The only thing I agreed with is that the best zelda game is the Super Nintendo version.
i remember seeing the NTSC snes console for the first time, an i was so shocked, i was like :O ? wtf happend there? what happend to the colourful buttons? so i pretty much thought it looked like a piece of shit lol, however, the cartridges for the games looked better, and im sure they had end labels, an here in the UK our carts dnt have em, which is crap.
Since we in Germany had the colorful Super Famicom buttons, these colors have been burned into my brain forever, so even when i played on the Playstation with the psx-Controller i still refered to the X-button as to "Yellow", to O as to "Red", triangle was "Blue" etc. :))
So people who didn't enjoy the SNES/SFC era, were often confused when i said "press Blue" when playing PSX :)
I got the super famicom 9 months in advance of the snes coming to the U.S. Every kid in school was jealous as hell and wanted to come over. I had Pilot Wings, Final Fight, and Super Mario World. When the snes came out in the U.S., I laughed my ass off at the horrid design!
nice video guys i got the mini snes and a regular snes and i gotta say! tons of memories with that system! and it's so awesome! you put Chrono Trigger music in there! cant have a Super Nes video with out Chrono Trigger!!!
@sorumian the only thing we really got looking at it in retrospect. What we didn't get was a shitload of games, picture without black boarders and 60hz gameplay.
@sorumian Seems funny in retrospect though at the same time, I can see why it made sense to Nintendo to do so (yet sucked for us getting such a boxy look for ours).
I prefer the Famicom design but the North American SNES doesn't look that bad. Certainly is not as bad a change in design as the PC Engine to the TurboGrafx 16.
I liked that you mentioned the colourful buttons because that's one of my gaming memories that seems like it should be stored away with the more substantial memories, like getting my ass kicked in front of a girl, it really stands out, looking at that controller and thinking "man...its so colourful"
I'm european and saw the US SNES someone had bought on vacation when i was like 12 and was completely shocked at the different design. I always felt the US one looked meaner ;) Though, i'd never give up the 4 color button pads on the euro/asia snes'es. Strange you don't mention the european SNES with super famicom style design at all though..
Oh, and i was a child when my parents give it to me (13, 14years) and it was strange to me when i saw some catridges boxes with super famicom on it. I knew it should be the way japanese called the videogame but only later i saw the japanese version on magazine and its really much nicer than the Us version. Anyway, here in Brazil ofcourse the most successful game of snes was International Super Star Soccer from Konami. It was in every game store and house acrross our country.
Im From Brazil and i remember like if it were yesterday the day i got to play my super nes. I didnt go to the beach so i could play Super Mario World; great system, i remember when i was able to rent Street fighter 2, i mean play SF2 at home with a quality very close to the arcades. lol. Great moments and great video. You guys really love this.
Here (Germany) we were quite lucky: got the Super Nintendo with the S.Famicom-design. :D Unfortunately we had to pay the price by dealing with slower gamespeed and smaller screenratio, but: SNES is still my favourite system of all times incluing my favourite games of all times (S.Metroid, Zelda III, Castlvania IV and so on), just my personal opinion flavoured with a big portion of nostalgia :)
We were lucky in Australia because our super NINTENDO looks exact;y the same as the JAPANESE super FAMICOM.......It's strange, the USA is the only country that got the square one i think, correct me if i'm wrong!
In the UK we had the Super Famicon design but it was called the SNES and the Genesis was called the Megadrive...both really great, iconic systems, good times.
@tony999hr Haha yeah Genesis is not a cool name as it's a reference to the Bible and a band fronted by Phil Collins. I never owned a Mega Drive but always wanted one instead I had a SNES and a PC Engine. Those Sega TV ads were so cool back in the 90s.
I had the Genesis but in the late 90's for 100 bucks I got an snes with 24 games which had all classics and some hidden gems like the biker mice and batman returns. Great system.
I am from Germany and I ordered the american (ugly) version. Later on came the slim line version and I bought that one too. I must say, - I had so much fun with the SNES. Nothing against XBOX or Playsie 3 but the SNES I had the most fun with.
I have never seen a Super Famicom, but I do think it is way cooler looking based on photos. I have seen the Super Famicom carts, and I always thought they looked nicer than the SNES ones.
I laughed hard when the beat up controller was shown with the wire pulled.. i can't remember how many times i opened up those controllers to get the wire back into place.. ahh memories
how were you able to play the super famicom in the north america at release? didn't it need a special adapter to play on north american tvs? the rental place had special adapters?
Thanks for the response! I know some would say "Do it yourself" but I don't want to half ass my Mega Man X retrospective with lacking equipment. I know you guys can do it justice but I'll video response my memories of the X series to your review. Until then guys...
The SNES looked ugly compared to the SFC but it had one MAJOR edge in its design. Removing the corner tabs in the cartridge slot made it import friendlier than the SFC which required a converter to fit SNES carts.
Love vid but I'll be damned if you guys neglect that Mega Man X retrospective after Capcom's bullshit this year. Take your time but make it happen.
I always preferred the look of the Super Famicom. When I first saw it I fell in love with the design and could not figure out why those of us in NA got a console that didn't look as cool.
I only had the snes for 2 years then I plugged it in and it never worked again and I never got a chance to enjoy both versions but if I was In Japan I would pick famicom and can you guys do a comparison on segasaturn us and Japan please
Here in Spain we got the Super Famicom shape, but it was called Super Nintendo anyway. I loved this console from day zero. I think I have finished Super Castlevania IV like seven million times. Great system.
glad to see that $1,000 you peddled your subscribers for to fix your $2,000 camera is being put to good use flapping your gums on a stationary tripod.
The SNES looks better with the yellowing stains its like a hairy fat guy sweting in his white tank top like Carl from ATHF lol nooooooo..... i like the Super Famicom console and controler better
Yeah, the PAL version is the same as the Japanese design...which I much prefer to the US version! I don't know why they made it so big and clunky looking in the States? Maybe so as it looked more like a descendant of the brick-like NES?
I'm from the UK, so I ended up with the nice sleak SNES case like the Super Famicom with the coloured controller. I got that for Christmas when I was a kid with Super Mario World and Street Fighter 2. That was one superb Christmas Day!
Last year whilst I was in the States I bought a US SNES from Play N Trade, and I honestly love the design of the US SNES. It feels like a man's toy. It's big, it's bulky, it looks like it would survive a 400ft drop. The controller colours suck though!
I live in Europe, and we had the Super famicon Design, but it was called SNES here to. I personally think the famicom looks better, but that's just my oppinion.
When I was showing my father the gifts for my siblings for Christmas, this video was playing the back (volume down), my dad saw the video and saw Robman and said if that was me, I guess I do share a resemblance of Robman.
We had the famicon version in Sweden. And I loved it as a kid and still do! I have my own now. Back then it was my big brother and friend that had one. I had a Mega Drive 2 (that looks 10 000 times cooler than nintendo and have more awesome, more adultish games). When I first saw the US version of the snes I think "UGLY"!
I agree guys the US version was a bad move, and the carts too, wow they were ugly. Im just glad the UK version went back to the Famicom design! SWEEEETT!! ;o)
That American design offends my eyes. Typical of the 80s and early 90's for American console manufacturers: Make everything either wooden or bigger than it needs to be. I mean theres no excuse for the NES and especially the Turbo Grafx 16 to be so fucking large in size! It seems the US hasn't made an aesthetically pleasing console til the Xbox 360.
We had the Famicom design here in the UK. You've gotta love the Japanese design over the bulky American version. Back then, there was no way the Japanese would have something that ugly cluttering up the Dojo.
+1000 Internets to Robman, ALttP is by far my favourite Zelda game of all time. We got the Super Famicom shape here in Australia but it was called the Super Nintendo. Never forget opening my SNES for XMas, I got the Super Mario Allstars bundle and my grandparents bought me the Super Scope. All my money growing up was spent on SNES games, either hiring or buying them. Favourites were ALttP, Super Metroid and Rock n Roll Racing.
2nd Fav system of all time, next to Saturn & NeoGeo AES (Tied).
Its funny that we europe get fucked almost 99% of the time with RPGs not comming to us, And even today still, getting some games never here and late release times.
so you guys got the ugly one we europe got the cool one, still small price for having great games like chrono trigger final fantasy breath of fire.
What happened? Nintendo of America hired someone to design the case who realized that rainbow buttons/logo looks absolutely terrible on a console that is otherwise entirely grey. The subdued purple and lavender of the SNES goes much better with the grey. The SFAM is also way too smooth, it has no real detail to it, where-as the SNES had these nice angles that really fit with the sort of commercial art design you would see at the time.

@ROGERDERBY Yeah well people complained that it stood to much so they made it look more like a VCR.

The famicom is sooo ugly! lol Thank God they changed it. I don't want some colorful controller that looks like it should be plugged into a kids V-tech plug n play. And the console change was good too! The non ntsc versions looked bland and boring! The only thing I agreed with is that the best zelda game is the Super Nintendo version.
pepsiturtle22 1 month ago
i remember seeing the NTSC snes console for the first time, an i was so shocked, i was like :O ? wtf happend there? what happend to the colourful buttons? so i pretty much thought it looked like a piece of shit lol, however, the cartridges for the games looked better, and im sure they had end labels, an here in the UK our carts dnt have em, which is crap.
Rilyn666 1 month ago

SNES is my favorite console but why did America get the crappy purple lol

Well Europe got the super famicom design so every time I see the super nintendo for america I always think of an pirate copy.

Strange you don't mention the european SNES with super famicom style design at all though..
roberttherazor 2 months ago
Oh, and i was a child when my parents give it to me (13, 14years) and it was strange to me when i saw some catridges boxes with super famicom on it. I knew it should be the way japanese called the videogame but only later i saw the japanese version on magazine and its really much nicer than the Us version. Anyway, here in Brazil ofcourse the most successful game of snes was International Super Star Soccer from Konami. It was in every game store and house acrross our country.
seikenflyer 2 months ago
Im From Brazil and i remember like if it were yesterday the day i got to play my super nes. I didnt go to the beach so i could play Super Mario World; great system, i remember when i was able to rent Street fighter 2, i mean play SF2 at home with a quality very close to the arcades. lol. Great moments and great video. You guys really love this.
seikenflyer 2 months ago
Here (Germany) we were quite lucky: got the Super Nintendo with the S.Famicom-design. :D Unfortunately we had to pay the price by dealing with slower gamespeed and smaller screenratio, but: SNES is still my favourite system of all times incluing my favourite games of all times (S.Metroid, Zelda III, Castlvania IV and so on), just my personal opinion flavoured with a big portion of nostalgia :)
GamesPresnRevs 2 months ago
Another EXCELLENT video guys, thanks!
We were lucky in Australia because our super NINTENDO looks exact;y the same as the JAPANESE super FAMICOM.......It's strange, the USA is the only country that got the square one i think, correct me if i'm wrong!
Thanks again.

In the UK we had the Super Famicon design but it was called the SNES and the Genesis was called the Megadrive...both really great, iconic systems, good times.

I am glad that we in Europe got the Famicon design. Also Sega Mega Drive is sooo much cooler name then Genesis
tony999hr 2 months ago
@tony999hr Haha yeah Genesis is not a cool name as it's a reference to the Bible and a band fronted by Phil Collins. I never owned a Mega Drive but always wanted one instead I had a SNES and a PC Engine. Those Sega TV ads were so cool back in the 90s.

Thanks for the response! I know some would say "Do it yourself" but I don't want to half ass my Mega Man X retrospective with lacking equipment. I know you guys can do it justice but I'll video response my memories of the X series to your review. Until then guys...
tokyobassist 2 months ago
The SNES looked ugly compared to the SFC but it had one MAJOR edge in its design. Removing the corner tabs in the cartridge slot made it import friendlier than the SFC which required a converter to fit SNES carts.
Love vid but I'll be damned if you guys neglect that Mega Man X retrospective after Capcom's bullshit this year. Take your time but make it happen.

Yeah, the PAL version is the same as the Japanese design...which I much prefer to the US version! I don't know why they made it so big and clunky looking in the States? Maybe so as it looked more like a descendant of the brick-like NES?

super famicom is the Snes in uk
kingdedede608 3 months ago
I dunno here guys, I prefer the SNES design better.
mitnosi 3 months ago
I'm from the UK, so I ended up with the nice sleak SNES case like the Super Famicom with the coloured controller. I got that for Christmas when I was a kid with Super Mario World and Street Fighter 2. That was one superb Christmas Day!
Last year whilst I was in the States I bought a US SNES from Play N Trade, and I honestly love the design of the US SNES. It feels like a man's toy. It's big, it's bulky, it looks like it would survive a 400ft drop. The controller colours suck though!

that's weird, cos in the UK we have the famicom design and I always preferred the look of the US SNES
Creamy360 3 months ago
We had the famicon version in Sweden. And I loved it as a kid and still do! I have my own now. Back then it was my big brother and friend that had one. I had a Mega Drive 2 (that looks 10 000 times cooler than nintendo and have more awesome, more adultish games). When I first saw the US version of the snes I think "UGLY"!
MasterNinja1990 3 months ago
I agree guys the US version was a bad move, and the carts too, wow they were ugly. Im just glad the UK version went back to the Famicom design! SWEEEETT!! ;o)
interghost 3 months ago
That American design offends my eyes. Typical of the 80s and early 90's for American console manufacturers: Make everything either wooden or bigger than it needs to be. I mean theres no excuse for the NES and especially the Turbo Grafx 16 to be so fucking large in size! It seems the US hasn't made an aesthetically pleasing console til the Xbox 360.
madcapoperator 3 months ago
We had the Famicom design here in the UK. You've gotta love the Japanese design over the bulky American version. Back then, there was no way the Japanese would have something that ugly cluttering up the Dojo.
danrocks1981 3 months ago
