Sorry but you stopped the clockwatch too early on OS X. Finder was not loaded, you should stop it after desktop icons (by Finder), the dock and the menubar are all the three loaded.
@K2ACP you don't need a tutorial, just create two partitions, install OS 9 on the first partition (there is a bug that prevents it working well on a partition STARTING past the 8 gbyte) and then install OS X.
Then you can just dual-boot using the Startup preference panel to choose the permanent booting one, or pressing option for temporary booting another one.

Windows or Mac or Linux or whatever, a boot taking more than 1 sec should really be considered a serious flaw in the basic hardware AND software system design!
It's a complete mystery people still accept those looong boot times, even in 2010, they are not motivated by some technical or natural law - just by 1960's design traditions - compare it to mobil phones or other embedded systems...
YOU MOTHERFUCKING PIECE OF SHIT. FUCKING YOUTUBE DOESNT DISPLAY VIDEOS WITH ADS IN THEM IN HTML5. IT REVERTS TO FLASH BECAUSE OF YOUR MONEY HUNGRY DRUG ADDICTION.
well boot speed isn't really a performance indicator, if it was, everyone would be still using DOS which boots in a matter of seconds. Or Commodore 64, which boots instantly :)
@Stug0 ever clicked a video without really wanting to watch it? Surfing the web works on youtube too, but you surf through videos.. hope that helps you man
@Jayomat Nope, not at all Jayomat. When I click a video without really wanting to watch it regardless of whether I let it play or not I close the tab/window without commenting on it. Commenting on it implies you do indeed care which boots faster hence my question.
@eitrig Any posix compliant can be categorised under *nix or Unix type. You might want to pay attention to the word "type" I attributed with which I put a bit of nuance in.
Also the Kernel in OSX is called XNU and the posix compliant environment is called Darwin. So Darwin is to GNU what XNU is to Linux.
What it has to do with anything is the fact that these robust OS's do not require frequent reboots, so just let them hibernate. In the end it's even better for the hardware.
@eitrig I knew that without the help of our mutual external memory. But even if I didn't, It's called "researching" and you should do that sometimes. It really beats "shouting something until you believe you are right".
I do not like rebooting because it is unnecessary. The only reboots I do are, for example, when I compiled a new kernel for one of my Linux boxes. Turing off computers is only for adding or changing internal hardware.
@Voxnulla What reboots have to do with the OS is simple. A modern OS is perfectly capable of running for months on end. In the good old days of dos and windows, well still with windows this wasn't/isn't the case. I want my systems to be immediately responsive, so no shut-down. Also shutting down shortens, on average, your life expectancy and heightens the chance for sudden component failure. It is not that hard, even without wikipedia to figure out.
LOL, So Mac OS X is lot faster, because: It loads lot bigger icons resolution, firewall, spelling corrector, spotlight, instant folder sharing etc etc, things that OS 9 didn't do, and guess what Mac OS X is sooo much stable!!! :p
@s8erboii3122 Mac OS 9 has its advantages, as well as 10.3 or 10.4. OS 9 is great for programs that do not work with Mac OS X such as classic games and programs. OS X is best for new programs or programs that require the internet. Since the iMac G3 was made at the height of the transition between Mac OS X and Mac OS 9, it runs both quite well.
@s8erboii3122 I got an iMac G3 running Windows 98 Plus!(cause I destroyed the old HDD and took a Hard Disk from an old Custom Buid PC),and it is real Windows 98,not an Emulator.
@Nikonman2000 Then you, sir, have an iMac with SEVERE Brain-damage. These iMacs had PowerPC processors, not Intel ones. To run 98 you would have to have ripped the machine to shreds and put in a new motherboard and everything.
@BlueCircleScotland I also replaced it with an Asus Pentium iii Motherboard because the original motherboard Fried up and Was In Pieces.and also,I have an Intel Imac, running Windows 7 Professional.
That is impossible, the most recent Apple OS that is possible to run is Tiger, Leopard is impossible to run, the G3 simply dosen't know how to interpret Leopard's instructions.
is what i meant by features is the things that make it "suck" if you use it for 2 years without anybody to change your opinion on how it is
(thats why most people hate it, they only take in other's opinions) then you will love vista.
nope. 3 whole years not one problem.
and if you don't like how it's a memory hog, go out and buy 2 gigs of ram for 20-50 bucks and stop bitching about it. my brother bought 4 gigs of ram and now he forbids me to say the word "osx" in our house. or xp.

Actually windows 7 has taken lots of Mac os x features. And a mac can do just as much as windows. Also, Vista sucked major cock on it's release. It didn't work with anything. And if windows xp wasn't around, everything would be the same, because something else would have taken it's place. DUhhHHHhHHHH
Apparently you never read my comment because I was agreeing that Windows Vista/7 DID take Mac OS X features. I never said it was bad that you're using Windows 7, I said it's bad that Microsoft can't come up with something that competes with the Mac OS X stuff. There's a video on things that Windows Vista took that I believe are still in use with Windows 7.
Excellent video, dj5! Is there any chance you could do a tour of Mac OS9 - we get lots of boot up demos on YT, but there may be newbies like myself who have only used 10.5.x and would be interested to see the older OS in action. I'd also like to hear a narration of what's going on - some MacOS9 videos are not so clear visually and just have loud music going!
Thanks, would love to do a tour of OS9, will not be up soon though as its going to be a hard job getting it recorded but should be up at some point in the next few weeks
I have the same iMac you show in your vid. I bought it on eBay. It runs Mac OS Tiger but my new iMac (Intel) runs OS Tiger to. I would like to install Mac OS 9 on the old one but the Install CD for OS 9 is missing. Can you tell me where I can get it?
This machine came with classic already installed but I think you need to install Mac OS 9 from a retail CD to a different system folder then you should be able to use classic and reboot into OS 9
i wish windows didnt have to start a billion services before i see my desktop. why cant it just be like mac and bam u see your desktop you're read, not have to wait a week.

Mac and Linux both run from the original Unix, thats why they are alike, not because they copied! :D

Not a big difference.
Still can't be my Commodore Amiga OS 4 - it boots in about ten seconds. And it shutsdown in 0 seconds (just flip the power switch off).

So where's the classic Mac startup "BONG"?
gnutelliums 3 years ago
Internal speaker probably died.

If it did, damn.

Yeah. D:
The speakers in the G3's and G4's were known to actually die really easy.
creamnpuffs 3 years ago
Yeah. My grandparent's new iMac doesn't seem to play the bong

I have the same iMac you show in your vid. I bought it on eBay. It runs Mac OS Tiger but my new iMac (Intel) runs OS Tiger to. I would like to install Mac OS 9 on the old one but the Install CD for OS 9 is missing. Can you tell me where I can get it?
masterdj48 3 years ago
try ebay

Hey can you tell me how you got Classic up and running? I hav e a iBook G3 and with Tiger and I wanna run OS 9 on it. Thanks alot.

This machine came with classic already installed but I think you need to install Mac OS 9 from a retail CD to a different system folder then you should be able to use classic and reboot into OS 9
