  • This video shows how much you learn from Miss Judy Garland, Sullivan was a powerful show back then, Miss Judy was the best entertainer and performer from the system she was in. LOUIE B knew it and did what was to be the end of this rare talent. It was LOUIE B's money that took the life of this great star. Her voice was too big for him to pass up.

  • Cringe!

  • 1965?

  • @east215 Ya, Judy was still alive.

  • Garland is in great voice here in 65 and loved seeing her 9/13/65 at Los Angeles Greek Theater...sat by George Hamilton & Hawley Mills and it was sublime watching this soulful lady singing for 90 minutes on stage & the way she moved around was magical and a thrill to watch...most TV performances don't capture this aspect of that wondrous experience but then with that face & voice the magic is still powerful in any form...Bravo Judy, you are missed!

  • @bradly2007 what!!!!!!!!!! you saw her in concert!! you are one lucky S.O.B. i am sooo jealous right now you have no idea!

  • @NicoleLeighKarbowski Judy played end of Summer 65 & as a crazed teen fan got front row tickets Opening Night...lucky choice as it was only full Concert for that engagement...she looked great, much younger & prettier than she photographed & wore a funky pants outfit w/ high boots & Chinese Red Top & moved all around the stage, sat down on piano bench, also had high stool and watching her was magic...mesmerized and didn't want the night to end & these gems take me back...nobody compares!

  • @bradly2007 if only i was there...if only... :)

  • @bradly2007 wow you are luky

  • @sarakat76 Guys you can tell from this clip & others there was nobody who compared to Judy...was digging her when other fools were putting her down & never understood that negative trip...always felt many were just jealous of this gigantic talent and couldn't handle it but their loss...miss Judy all the time but love watching the awesome things she left behind and thankfully now new generations can appreciate the greatest on youtube...long live Judy!!!

  • @bradly2007 I love Judy, when I was child I watching more Judy's film ... Judy IS the musical! (sorry for may english!)

  • Not even Jolson sang these Standards the way Garland sang them. She really had the talent that evades even her daughters. A talent to sing someone else's song and make it their own, the way Judy Garland does.

  • Oh my goodness. She was so amazing!! She had something indescrible, that certain "magic" no one had. Who else totally captivates people, to this day, to the point where you can watch them repeately and never get enough??? ONLY Judy Garland!!

  • @plp1964 Judy's still The WORLD'S GREATEST ENTERTAINER. No one before or since can give a performance the way Garland does. The young ppl who find JG on youtube are blown away by the sheer power and Talent she exudes.JG Gains more fans everyday .When her name is mentioned it involks respect and power. "Singers" today dont have great voices, they lip sync at their concerts and use tech to enhance their voice. Ppl arent used to seeing a singer like JG. We crave to be entertained and Judy does it.

  • Sublime!

  • Judy wore this gown a lot. She was smart to keep the gowns after they were made for her especially from the Valley of The Dolls. That famous Paisely pant suit looked great on her. When Susuan Hayward wore it in the movie you couldn't help but think of Judy wearing it.

  • she changed it, jerry lewis sang soft and low when he recorded it, and connie francis says soft and low when she sang it, it was changed so it wouldn't come off racist i guess, and i have the other comments about judy's voice on this show, all i can say is, i love judy, and even if she wasn't in the best voice, she still put her heart and soul , her whole bself, live, no one sings live these days. plus this was after judy's voice was damaged in 1964, she still went on singing.

  • greatest ever!!!!!!!!

  • Perfect....she was beautiful....

  • what a star!!! god she was good!!!!

  • I love her so much. I love how she always makes these little bows at the end and in the beginning and how she always twiddles with the cable of the microphone :). That's just her :).

  • fantastic. what no one knows, she transcends camp, she transcends everything. i mean, she was dead when i was born, but...you know. sigh. it kills me.

  • Argh! I sing along to this song and everytime I am about to say "Old Black Joe"

Then she sings "Soft and Low" and Argh!!!

That is pissing me off, HAHA

  • why did she change it?

  • I have no idea :D

But those other times she sang this song

    she said 'Old Black Joe'

  • @teddyar because it was racial and this was the height of the Black power and Civil Rights Movement. She became more sensitive and so did the networks.

  • love judy! love her

  • I have read that her face was somewhat swollen bc Judy suffered from time to time with Hepatitis - no matter, her voice was still her own signiture, simply fabulous!!!

  • Well I dunno bought that below. All I know is I want that outfit to wear out to the bars and minds to blow.

  • you got that right sister!!

  • Judy always had a great sense of style!!

  • Ya'll catch that lyric substitution "soft and low" instead of "Old Black Joe"???? This was during the height of the Civil Rights Movement and, no doubt, the networks didn't want no heat from the brothers and sisters. However, I think its a little silly to change words to songs for such a reason. Everybody knows "Old Black Joe" was the title of a song simply aluded to in ROCK-A-BYE and "soft and low" is not a song, thus the line doesn't have the same meaning.

  • yeah yeah, i kept singing along and thinking wth? but i think you're right. ed sullivan censored a lot back in the day.

Sing Ole Black Joe Just As Though You Had Me On Your Knee!

  • someone knows the name of that microphone?

    thanks!

  • Thanks so much! Remember this as well and appreciate it even more now (as I always say) . . . thanks for generously posting this.

  • beautiful, thank you

  • Sounds great here...clothes are great too...yet she's looking a little puffy in the face as well as a lotta make-up ...probably a sober "bloat" period without the chems...

Sullivan always treated here well. Miss her!

  • Love you, Judy..... Andrew/Ohio

  • Sorry but true your both wrong it was Edith Head !

  • Edith Head was replaced as the show's costume designer after the 1st spisode of "The Judy Garland Show". Her designs were considered too sombre by the show's Exec. Producer. I think Judy wore this gown in Show 23

  • You are both wrong!!

  • No, we aren't!!

  • @Franziasack R.A/B.M designed all the Clothes for TJGS series. In book about TJGS C.Sanders is very informative .RA/BM even designed clothes for her NYC trip beause. SHE had nothing to wear it was cold in NYC that time Producers had coats, casual outfits made for TJGS and so she had clothes to wear. Her body type made it impossible tobuy from a store. E. Head designed l eps of TJGS series but she was replaced due to drab colors/costumes. E.Head did do TJGSpecial wSilvers and Goulet in eary''63

  • is this gown bob mackie??

  • Well, it's either Bob Mackie or Ray Aghayan. The gown is one of her tv series costumes and Aghayan designed the majority of her costumes personally. Certainly, it was a gown that she wore quite a lot in her last 5 years. I think she last wore it as late as Nov '68 for the Arlen tribute

  • @mandeley Ray Aghayan designed this gown.. she even wore it to her nine month marriage to fiurth hubby Mark herron who was another blood sucker... Sid was the only man who really loved her and made each Palace engagement a reality.. He was also the strongest out of the 5 marriages.. I met Sid once and he was such a nice man and really loved Judy and I could tell he was sincere by the look in his eyes. Judy is the Greatest Star and Entertainer that ever lived..

  • @SplinterG66 yes Bob Mackie designed this.. Judy didn't have anything of her own which is why she always kept what was designed for her. MGM and WB had all her clothes custom made since she had a unique body type and it was impossible they said for her to go to a store and buy clothing. So TJGS designers created alot of her concert gowns and out fits...She wore this dress a number of time and they were let out when she gained a few pounds and then taken in when she lost weight..

  • She probably sang "soft and low" bc this was a time when the Civil Rights Movement was gaining momentum; being a lifelong democrat and supporter of equal rights for all, Judy realized I'm sure that the lyrics, "Old Black Joe" could have been offensive to people in the television audience. I'm certain that as you say, that did not have to be explained to her.

  • why does her face look abit bloated?

  • Understandably, she was very sick...with all of the presc. pills and living a hard life...a lot of toxic build-up...then of course, it was just a matter of time when she died.

  • Judy went up and down with her weight a lot, and yes, probably a lot of time it may have just been some fluid, but I must say she was in great voice here and I've never heard the version where the lyrics were changed before.

  • Thanks for the cheery words.

  • Showstopping performance from Judy in 1965 which was a time when she was past her prime...I don't think so and it sure doesn't sound like it here...so many don't know how to appreiciate great talent because this little dynamo was the greatest of them all...Bravo Judy!

  • i never watched this video before, thans 4 posting!! i love Judy Garland a lot!!

  • her face is oddly blank - usually she is amazingly expressive - did she have a face lift?

  • I don't find her face blank, but no, Judy never had a surgical face lift. She sometimes did, however, have temporary lifting done with rubber bands and adhesive. Once the show was over, off it came.

  • 12TH 5 STARS WERE FROM ME JUDY.....My all life time Idol........C.A.

  • you know....about her voice after the series...when you watch all of them and think about how much she had to rhearse and then many times do more than one take ...week after week for 23and 3/4 shows....singing with true Judy magnitude....also concidering all else ..it is a wonder she ever sang again...glad she did as well

  • I have to agree with Timmy (I like soft an low much better). I can't believe her voice was this good after the tv series folded....glad to find out she still had some amazing performances left!

  • I believe "Old Black Joe" was the way the song was written. I'm sure it had to be explained to Judy why it needed changing.

  • first time I have seen this clip....Judy looks swollen....although seemingly out of breath at the start...she is in fabulous voice with this policaly corect version of ROCK-A-BYE (soft and low) ha...I've always used OLD "MAN" JOE...but I do like "soft and low"....concidering the time of this clip, it is an admirable change

  • I think she's out of breath because she had just finished "Come Rain/Shine." This is the only time I ever heard "soft and low." Afterward, she went back to "Old Black Joe" in her performances.

  • glad you knew that bit of Trivia....that is what I like about this site

  • she sang "soft and low" when she did this song as a duet with Andy Wiliams on television

  • Well, Andy Williams' staff must have decided on "soft and low." Judy herself certainly wouldn't have a clue why. In 1967 at the Palace she sang "Old Black Joe." John Bubbles danced with her then, and he WAS old and black.

  • Incredible...this powerful legendary singer still hasn't been equaled in the industry and could pack more power and passion in just a few minutes than anyone! More please!!!

  • yep, nothing better!

  • Untouchable!

  • Are these clips available commercially, do you know? Thanks.
