Too bad its next to impossible to get any of those things here in shitfest Iowa. Nice set up though, I really got into Forza recently and have been wanting to at least get a wheel but they only sell PS3 wheels here and not 360 ones. Which angers me greatly.
i was debating buying a donor pedal assy, and wiring in the brake pedal on the new assy, into the "a" botton circuit and bolt it onto my current pedal assy. boom, clutch pedal. damn...
i see sir...thank you for the info. i have been using the the clutch "button" for some time now, personally i love it. but IMHO, to install a clutch pedal would only be worth it if its variable. great work though, on the r/d. happy racing!!!
You can get a variable clutch pressure if you map the clutch to the trigger on the controller. Unfortunately there isn't any variable button or lever on the wheel to map it to :(
I wish I had the motivation to build more, but I don't. It take a bit of work to modify the wheel, build the frame, find a good bucket seat, built a clutch pedal, and build a shifter mechanism. I wish there were cheaper options for others out there. Playing Forza on a good setup is incredibly fun.
pretty cool i'll admit, but can you ride the clutch? I saw you assigned it to A (correct me if i'm wrong) nd usually a is just a in and out, not like the triggers that you can ease on and off. Please let me know nd I might attempt it my self :)
Unfortunately yes, the "A" button is treated as a digital on/off switch in Forza 3. Since my clutch pedal is tied into that button I can't slip the clutch. It's a shame because the buttons do seem capable of analog signals according to some tests with my multimeter. The resistance changes with how hard you press the button.
really? hmm...damn, see i was hoping to do this mod. So, with the clutch pedal, i assume you used an variable resistor, so you could in theory have a digital proportional clutch?
I really want the ability to slip a clutch in Forza 4. Any word on weather or not the "a" signal is analog or digital, in FM4?
I have a resistor inline with a switch that engages the clutch ~3/4. It does absolutely nothing. Forza treats the "A" button as a digital on/off regardless of the resistance. It sucks because the "A" button is capable of analog depending on how hard you press the button. Probably not practical due to the sensitivity. Game play is still 1000x better having the clutch pedal over semi-automatic shifting.
Guys, fanatec h shifter don't work on the ms wheel, tried wiring in but it confuses the hell out of the wheel! Sequential it has to be. Awesome enough tho! Thought I'd let u kno before you tried it.
Good work, I did the same thing, i'll post a video soon. Advice to anyone who wants it...I bought the fanatec sequential shifter and wired that in, saves a lot of work. I have a feeling the h-shift might work too but haven't tried it yet! Bring on Forza 4!
sequential shifter with clutch? Not gonna lie thats a bit odd. Why not make a 6 speed. Yea its gonna take more work, but u wanted it to feel real right?
Ok to me it looks like all you have done is made a pedal and pre-tented it was a clutch, because when you were shifting up with the clutch the RPM would drop as it didn't in the video and i don't mean drop i mean like a little blip in the RPM which it didn't :/
i did this to my wheel it woked 2 days now the wheel gets crazy every time it just keep pushing some button by it self that makes the rest of the buttons not working.
i know how to make a H shifter for the Xbox360 MS wheel but you have to shift in order like 1 2 3 4 5 and down shift 5 4 3 2 1 heres the out look on it. 1\ / 3\ /5 \ / the gear box has to be in a zig zag pattern like up top. 2 4 6
the stick has a switch on top that engages right/left paddle + and the gear box just - grounds. if u have right Paddle + on start off with stick up top at 1, just follow the zig zag to gear up. switch to left paddle + go backwards

your deadzones look like they need tweaking a bit on ure steering if u type in on google "forza 3 steering wheel" u should come across a forum which will give you a great setup i have it on my Mad Catz 2 wheel, it will feel more realistic then a delay in those first few inchs
There is a link in the description field below the video that goes into more details. There is a blueprint drawing for the frame as well. The clutch pedal and gear shift lever were made from scrap pieces of steel I had laying around combined with a few roller lever switches.
I managed to do the same the the madcatz wheel with the shifter on and a hole-punch bolted to the footrest of the pedal for the clutch. Made the gameplay 100X better. unfortunately the wheel itself broke and i cant find another one so i may try to use your design :D Nice work, hope it lasts you a while.
why are so many negative people dissing your fantastic innovation. so fuck if the clutch is a button. it is closer to realism if you press a lever operated button with your foot than a button on your wheel. your sequential gear shifter is fine. it is impossible to wire in the H gear shifter. i made a very crude version of your design for £8. no seat, wooden frame. it is far more realistic and enjoyable than the flappy paddle. the fp's still work. did you have any problems with up on the d-pad?
@kilomeister Thanks for the positive comment! I haven't had any new problems come up with the wheel modifications, but my d-pad hasn't always worked the best even when it was brand new. When selecting cars in Forza the selection may jump several cars when pressing left on the d-pad.
you should have shown the clutch and lever in your vid. all i saw was you playing forza 3. still is awsome how you pulled it off. but i think you would have saved a lot time and money if Microsoft had the brains to make and really good wheel with the gear lever and clutch.
I assume you're referring to the speed of operating the clutch and gear shift lever? In a racing environment where performance takes priority over longevity you're going to shift as fast as possible. Computer controlled sequential manual transmissions can shift in ~100 milliseconds while twin clutch manuals like Audi's DSG can shift in ~10 milliseconds. Considering the types of cars available and upgrade possibilities in Forza, the shifting is accurate enough to enjoy a racing game.
@bcr4977 LOL....PWND!!!! but actually in rally cars or in wtcc cars they put secuential dsg clutches and gears, that means that they are almost free from clutch, u just have to tap up or down the gear shift....tells u a wtcc driver so....u r wrong daviditson
@daviditson im not the person you was talking to, but i actually drive a manual transmission car on a daily basis, and i also play forza (with a controller, sadly). the way he is shifting, there is nothing wrong with it, hes doing it as fast as possible because - guess what - he wants to go as fast as possible. in forza, you dont need to use the clutch to pull off from the start anyway, so the only time you use it is if you're changing gear or trying to get the revs up for a drift or something.
wow that is sweet i wish i could do that with mine but im pretty sure i would just break mine. i hate the paddle shifters i dont even use my wheel anymore because of that and no clutch. but good work man
hey this is sick man i was wondering if you would consider building one with a cluch and no seat or stand just the wiring and sodering of the board for me and if you could tell me how much the whole thing would cost if you would
Check the link in the description of the video. I have a link to the Forza Motorsports forum that includes more pictures and a detailed drawing of the frame. It also goes over how everything is wired.
For most people you're absolutely right. For me it was a fun project that was much cheaper to build myself. I already had the Microsoft wheel and for another $120 I was able to add an OEM Honda bucket seat, steel tube frame, clutch, and sequential gear shift lever.
I would buy the wheel immediately if there were clutch and shifter. I really hate Micro$hit because they cant make anything without trying to make the most money at the same time. Its only faceless profithungry company..
thats pretty cool, but it's not really like a real car. The shifting is too fast and unrealistic. But hey, you managed to make that out of scratch so i give you props on making something most people can't.
So I guess your clutch only has a depression depth of like 2 inches? Yeah right. If you weren't fucking stupid you would understand what I meant. In a real car a clutch has a depression depth of almost a foot, and in this video's case, it's like an inch and a half. A clutch isn't a button you press, it is a pedal that can be depressed in as far as around a foot. Not to mention the friction zone on most clutches are around half of a foot from it's undepressed state.
@grrfsrip depression depth doesnt even matter. everybody driving a manual for a few months knows exactly where the clutch just fully engages to separate the engine from the trans. or biting point as jimiH calls it. you put the clutch right about there, depress clutch about an inch, shift, let up on clutch. it sure as hell aint smooth but its fast. only problem is goin too fast from 2nd to 3rd will grind cuz the synchros wont work that fast always.
@afeight9 You're referring to "The Friction Zone". But my initial point is still valid, in saying how the guy in the video has a clutch that depresses about an inch. JimiH is thinking the same thing as me, how the clutch isn't really realistic. One last time please listen to me. The video and a real car are completely different. This video is a button, and in a car is a pedal. There's a difference, which in turn makes it unrealistic.
@grrfsrip you obviously have not driven a car with an aftermarket clutch. Yes, forza 3 has a button, which isn't exactly an accurate replica of a stock clutch, but as far as racing clutches go, its pretty much fully engaged, or not at all. even in my street car, Nissan 240sx, I still have an OEM clutch set up with very little travel distance, and it has a tiny friction zone because i just prefer it that way. You should do some research before becoming an internet hero on youtube.
Did either me or afeight9 say anything at all about aftermarket or racing clutches? No, didn't think so. If one of us had said anything about an installed aftermarket clutch then I wouldn't be having this conversation with either of you because then my intial point wouldn't have much of a "point" anymore. But no, neither of us said anything about aftermarket clutches so I don't understand why you're telling me 'to do research' when it was completely irrelevant to our conversation.
can you please explain how you fabricated your shifter. i have all the tools to do it but i just need a basic idea to start with. I will also be fabricating a new clutch and a e-brake.
Follow the link in description field of the youtube video. It's basically three pieces of metal all hinged together on the same bolt. The center piece acts as a lever with a 1/4" pin on the bottom that pushes against the the two side pieces. The two side pieces pull the lever back using a spring and another 1/4" pin that is fixed. It's not easy to explain, but hopefully the pictures on the link will explain it better.
It's not something you can buy. I made the game seat/clutch/gear shift lever from scratch. I had to take apart the wheel to solder the other switches inline with the wheel buttons.
There is a bearing mod you can do that will help some of the free play that develops after using it a while. Pretty much anything is possible. It is just a matter of how much time, money, and effort someone is willing to put into it.
if only I had the tools and the skills. nice job

thats pretty cool, but it's not really like a real car. The shifting is too fast and unrealistic. But hey, you managed to make that out of scratch so i give you props on making something most people can't.

@grrfsrip your dumb i can shift that fast in my car... its just not smoothe

@segadomcast

Wow, this is sick. Microsoft should do this, i would definitely buy a steering wheel if they had a clutch and shifter

can you please explain how you fabricated your shifter. i have all the tools to do it but i just need a basic idea to start with. I will also be fabricating a new clutch and a e-brake.
amast3rMind69 2 years ago
@amast3rMind69
It's not easy to explain, but hopefully the pictures on the link will explain it better.

i just made a clutch out of a rock band wheel for my wheel
amast3rMind69 2 years ago
wow thats awesome you had to solder the clutch and make all that
Its amazing!!
joeysanimation333 2 years ago
where can I buy the clutch?
joeysanimation333 2 years ago
It's not something you can buy. I made the game seat/clutch/gear shift lever from scratch. I had to take apart the wheel to solder the other switches inline with the wheel buttons.
bcr4977 2 years ago
very cool. do you think there would be a way to mod out the "mechanical deadspot" in the center wheel position?
I9IIEIIYIIEIIS 2 years ago
There is a bearing mod you can do that will help some of the free play that develops after using it a while. Pretty much anything is possible. It is just a matter of how much time, money, and effort someone is willing to put into it.
