I think the big trend in animation now is that neither 2D or 3D is really king. Rather a balance between them is king, which is what you have here, cgi rendered for a nice flat look.

Films like this don't neccarcarily have explanation, rhyme or reason. That's what I love about short films (and the film medium in general; and all art for that matter!); the artist portays an idea through metaphores and story, but the viewer is at liberty to take whatever they want away from it. The object isn't neccicarily to 'understand' the film, but to be provoked in to thinking about the wider world.

the woman loves the man, but he uses her and then doesn't call and in that time the octopus is truly affectionate toward her and when the man returns/drunk and aggressive, the octopus protects her. girl and octopus run away together. the plot wasn't that original. its the artistry of the animation and mise en scene that make this short worthwhile.

At first I saw this as a sort of "beauty & the beast" style story, with an octopus as the beast. The octopus is born, sees the girl, and spends its life trying to attain said girl, despite the fact that a girl and and octopus cannot be together. With that in mind, I suddenly though it was more like the relationship between man and God. Man spends its time trying to get closer to God... well it's pretty self explanatory. I'm agnostic btw, I just appreciate the (possible) POV of the artist.

Shorts like this tell a story while also presenting an message in relation to an artistic medium.

Please try to respect that this probably took a long time to make and a lot of thought went into making it.

the girl loves the octopus (this can be seen when the postcard is left in the water instead of being stored in her cupboard) and regained "freedom" since her husband is dead.

they take the car and drive off, with the background music matching the whole story.

it's something like a mainland immigrant story since they speak mandarin.
