  • You are amazing! When we get a newer dog I will use your videos what to do. Ours are so old now...

  • My dog is barking and getting mentally blocked when we meet dogs she don't know. Won't turning around tell her "yes, I think this is really scary too! Lets go the other way!" And maybe get her more scared?

I really trust your methods, but this is the opposite to what other trainers have told me. But none of their methods have worked (like going around the other dogs or getting her to sit-staywhen they pass and such).

Could you show this with a reactive dog?

  • What can I do if my dogs bark in the backyard when he sees a squirrel? The love squirrels and in the morning there are a bunch that love to torment them. I try to stop them but it doesn't work for the most part. I dont want to wake the neighbors. Help...

  • my dog doesnt bark at other dogs unless the dog is like a foot away but she doesnt bark at other dogs if there in there fence ??? still fallow these steps???

  • Emily, my dog has gotten so reactive to cats and squirrels in the back yard that he is injuring himself by jumping against the fence. He's better when on a walk but I hope that--by using your methods--I can change his behavior in the yard. Before he gets badly hurt.

  • This came in handy, Thanks.

  • Thank you soooo much for this video. I really like your method and it seems very effective on my cairn terrier :-)

  • My 2 year old male dog barks every time he sees a dog. I have taught him the "let's go" command, but when other dogs are around I literally have to drag him away. I have tried this several times with dogs around my complex, but my dog tries to bolt at any dog he sees, what am I doing wrong?

  • i have a gsd puppy, and since he is a guarding breed he has a habbit of barking when we tie him outside, also he barks at other dogs with a growls, but he doesn't intend harm he wants to play.. is there any method i could use when i don't have treats or the clicker?

  • Thanks for putting up these incredibly well thought out videos that actually work!

I get the feeling that all this is put up for free because of a real altruistic attempt to change the current state of things out there in walk-land, which is also a really nice thing.

The thing I find wih Kikopup's methods is that even when the shit hits the fan, I've always got at least something simple to remember so as to not reinforce the situation and non-aggressivly react, thus keeping my dogs bond ;)

  • Hi, do you have any advice on a barking dog when sat out side a cafe. He barks at dogs walking past or people appearing from doors unexpectedly. He is 7 months old.

  • my dogs only bark at some dogs in the neighborhood and even if i tell them no, they still bark. I try turning around but most of the time they keep on barking. It's a little inbarasing especially since they bark very loud. what could I do?

  • You are a great dog owner!

  • my dog is a yorkshire terrier, and he barks everytime he sees a BIG DOG

he sometimes barks at people too.

i tried the trick(LET'S GO!),but he still was barking

    please help me,

    thank you

  • @dietolleeinzigartige same problem, but i have a JRT X :/

  • @emilyschannel97 I've noticed with my Jack Russell when she starts barking, or pulls on the leash, you make the leash shorter, and hold the leash above His/Her head :)

  • @dietolleeinzigartige Leave sooner? BEFORE your dog barks, so your dog gets hang of "Let's go".???

  • i love this episode!

  • In the dog's eyes, you are completely contradicting yourself by using those treats, by first warding off the dog from them by not allow it to obtain the treats, then later, you use them to ward off the dog from other dogs or similar stimuli.

This mixed message causes confusion. The dog doesn't know why it does or does not deserve a treat. This type of behavioral training is everything but consistent.

I completely disagree with your methods and will no longer watch your videos.

  • @AJ72Camaro Lol, i wonder, if you've yet taught, "Leave it"???

I am in control, of which treats my dogs gets,

and which ones he doens't get.

My dog is not confused at all, After working on my dog-aggressive dog, NOTHING, no book, no trainer, nothing has helped him as much as me imitating Kikopup.

    Please watch it again.

The tossed treats are being used as distractions, to cause dog to pull, so Kikopup can teach him "when leash pulls, we change directions" the others r rewards set down.

  • @AJ72Camaro well, i said that wrong in my last reply to you, i meant the second type of treats are not exactly rewards, but, are being put down slowly, right in front of the dog, as a distraction/make association "scarey dogs = treats"

and also, this helps dog sort of assume the sniff position, which is calming signal also.

    like i said,

NOTHING has helped my aggressive reactive dog much as following Kikopup's advice. Even if it doesn't make sense to how you *think* your dog thinks..

  • Hey Kikopup. Your videos are amazing. I am fostering a morbidly obese rescue dog. It's been a week. The problem is that he cannot walk like in the video. He can slowly walk about 30 or 40 paces and then needs to rest for 10 minutes. He is barking at passing dogs and also when he wants attention. I try to ignore him and them click and treat when he quiets down. Any other suggestions to help with his barking? Thanks again so much for your fantastic videos.

  • I really love your clips but would really like to see some using untrained dogs with the problems you are addressing. This dog is lovely but doesn't seem to have a barking issue!

  • I really have problems with my dog barking at people who work at my house. Every time the same person comes in a door, my dog starts barking and even biting. What can I do? If he keeps on barking my parents are going to send him out of my house! I really need your help! Please! Thank you.

  • Do you have any recommendations for a 70 lb BMD mix who lunges and pulls so hard that I need both hands to hold him and can't hold a treat to distract him? I sprained my wrist in a training class once because he pulled so hard.

  • your cute!

  • My dog started barking when she is on the leash and when there were other dogs. I solved this problem by teaching her to look at me, so that we can first approach the other dog. As she can sniff at the other dog, there's no reason for her to bark. I usually can decide if it is necessary by notice her body language. But there is one dog she absolutely hates - the trick with looking does not help here. She keeps barking and ignores me. So how could I solve that problem?

  • I am always bothered when I see dogs getting so many treats and trainers greatly misinterpreting what the dog is thinking and doing. I really think you are masking behaviors with reflex actions brought about through conditioning. And while I do not agree with this type of clicker training, I am very impressed with the way your videos are presented. For people on youtube looking for good instruction with clickers and treats you are one of the best, by far.

  • i love the dog is it yours?

  • I love (back-clipping) harnesses; they can make walking even an extremely difficult dog much easier and more pleasant for both of you. Plus, they seem more comfortable than collar-walks. Even if a harness doesn't exactly look flattering on your particular dog, you may find that the benefits are very worthwhile.

  • Were to you start with a large dog that barks and pulls when they see another dog or human. My dog is very strong and i have two they seems to ege each other on and i oftain get pulled over if I try to stop them, they only bark if i'm holding them back if i let them pull they are less likely to bark, they are very friendly and love people but it's just to much. I find I don't have the same problem when they are off the lead beocuse they will gladly come back when I call.

  • @kikopup i have a question.....you know how you said that you shouldn't ever leave the dog by the fence where it can see passing people and dogs? well my dog (3 yr old lab) is outside a lot and she can easily see everything through the fence and she barks A TON! what can i do to fix this problem? (my dog has to be outside a lot because i go to school and she cant be inside the house 24/7)

  • My dog has such long fur and looks stupid in a harness...

  • Thanks! Your videos are great! I have done a lot of clicker training with horses but am new to dogs and your videos are a fantastic help!

  • My dog Max, he is so smart (Being as he is a Border Collie), but very agressive. He's alot better about other dogs now. We can now go on walks and he plays with the other dogs we meet. But he is still... Not exactly agressive towards people... He acts real sweet and suddenly barks really loud.. It doesn't bother people who know about dogs, they just say that if the dog bites them they can handle him. And I'm scared he's gonna bite a kid. What can I do to cure this?

  • I have a bit complication. The pup's parents thought it good idea to teach their pup to bark while I was off. Came back to sit the dog, and now he barks all the time at just about anything and when he wants something ('cause they've been giving him treats for barking for their amusement). Taking him out to walk and he barks when he hears or sees something move. I've been clicking & treating when he doesn't bark. Seems calmer after 2 days, but it's slow going. :o(

  • is that a full white german shepard? My cousins have one and I have a jackchi

  • I'm a fan of "force free" and clicker training. BUT.. we are often joined by 1 or 2 other nice dogs. Especially the black lab girl is a bad influence for barking and lunging and it seems like, besides the physical challenge of trying to turn around 2 lunging dogs, that my dog's training goes out the window as he joins in and behaves as he would not otherwise.

  • If more people would watch these videos, Cesar Milan would lose his job...

  • @gimkilo57 If only!!!!

  • Where do I get get that kind collar or halter

  • Thak you so much for this vidéo !

I'm a french dog educ specialized in Clicker Training to.

And all you vidéos are so good and weel done, it is a pleasure !

  • how do i train my husky not to pull when we wal i say no, no pull stop pulling dont pull and he doesnt i even try giving a little tug and he jus keeps it up

  • what is that " click" thing and where do you buy it?thnx

  • @TheApril612 u can get them from most pet stores like petsmart or petco. They are only a few dollars. Thats where i got mine from

  • What do YOU think about this?

    "Dog Whisperer: Calm Down! "

    (Can't leave the URL)

  • "anxious owners who panic when their dogs bark" lol!! my mom is like that.

  • I used this method and I was so happy with the results. Abbey has become MUCH less reactive. I used Abbey as my Guinea Pig, but I am going to use these exercises for my mom's dog Bella who has some social issues.

  • Thank you for doing this video. I have a rescue Patterdale Terrier she's very well trained in the house, but when outside can be reactive to other dogs she doesn't know. I've had her to training classes 3 times a week for 6 months and although she's fine at training she still reacts out and about. I'm really hoping implementing this into her training I can finally make her more relaxed around dogs without her feeling so anxious all the time. I'll see if I can get some before and after vids done.

  • Comment removed

  • My dog doesn't lunge, he growls, barks and is scared and nervous. will this work for him? He's a 6 year old mini Schnauzer.

  • OMG this was so incredibly helpful! My dog Abbey has ALWAYS been reactive on walks and I've never known what to do to stop it. This tutorial was TONS of help. I'm going to start training it. That Canadian Husky is GORGEOUS, btw.

  • Excellent Emily, great learning video !! thankyou for sharing :o)

  • WOW! WOW! this is a REALLY EXCELLENT vid, i love the way you have shown it, I love that you have put the info on about the chemical reaction within the dogs body. Education helps people to understand better what is going on, so that they then can have the knowledge how to help their dog. This provides it all...fantastic is defo one to share:))) i love the cue 'Lets go', i use it often for changes in direction and to get the dogs attention back on you:))

  • i have the same dog aussie shepherd

  • jedno je pas, drugo je hrana jao haha

  • Do you think you could help me train my dog personally? Are you on the east coast or west coast?

  • you got to see if cats can talk on Heeeee2010

  • Great video. Good presentation. Thanks.

  • What do I do when my husky wont stop crying? He cries a lot at night. My brother gets mad at me, I don't know how to tell him to stop it without waking up and I have school at 7AM and it's hard for me.

  • that white dog is so beautiful!!

my beagle barks when he sees another dog he cant play with.

he usually barks when he sees dogs. but humans are ok.

  • Your videos are very interesting!!

How would you recommend to go about a dog that barks to people on the roof? We live in a city and our dog barks like mad when the neighbors get on the roof- while we DO want her to warn us of such things, once I come out to check it out and tell her it's fine, she still won't shush.

We can't really 'pull her away' from what's making her bark as she has a view of the roof from all of our yard.

  • Excellent!

  • what happens when my dog just keeps barking even when we walk away

  • @soccerhunxx Try to walk away as briskly as you can encourage your dog to come with you. Turn around earlier at first. Work on the "lets go" FIRST without other dogs around before using it! Remember to proof!

  • I love your videos and we have my puppy in training - he is so smart in home but god forbid take him on a walk he doesnt even CARE about the treats...clicker doesnt even seem to do anything either.

  • @NativeHiro That tells you your dog is so stressed to be out of the house that his body has cut off the blood circulation to his stomach causing him to not be hungry. You need to habituate him to being out of the house, take him places, perhaps feed him his meals by hand when out and about? Make sure being out side is the 'norm' not a rarity.

  • This is great. Will these same tips work for squirrels? My Spaniels are squirrel maniacs. They usually walk fairly well but when they see a squirrel they go a little insane. Very embarrassing on early morning weekend walks!

  • @LanikinsNJ Yes. It does.

  • This is great. Will these same tips work for squirrels? My Spaniels are squirrel maniacs. They usually walk fairly well but when they see a squirrel they go a little insane. Very embarrassing on early morning weekend walks!

  • I love your videeoosss <3

  • I have just come across your video page, home page and blog, and I will follow them closely from now on. I was a bit stuck in teaching my dog pivoting, and I also wanted to find some new tricks to train, and when I came across your video page, I got all the help I needed, and SO much more! Now I have watched lots of your videos and set up a training plan for passing dogs, for barking at strange people, and of course for pivoting and tricks :-) Thank you so much for sharing!

  • @solvt my blog is very boring as I dont write in it often! :(

  • Thank you for this, I am now going to start trying your treat training when my dog sees other dogs. I have a pug with high anxiety that just goes crazy barking if another dog is anywhere near her. I'm at the end of my rope! Have tried so many things

  • I wish you are here in Washington....

  • that's really helpfull. thanks. I can't wait until the episode 4. You are such a fantastic dog trainer, even better then Zak George. Will you be on Animal Planet some day??

  • Awesome video! Happy New Year! Coach Cory

  • Popular american TV is not ready to let go of the debunked dominance theory yet. Maybe one day...

  • Could not agree more but your videos are helping people to understand there is a different way to train. Plant a seed......

  • Actually -- I think that the trends are DEFINITLY swinging away from the 'dominance theory'. In fact, Zak's show(or youtube vids) never show or use dominance method. He uses communication and trust building and relationship building. I love both of your training styles and watch both of your vids all the time. Just wanted to say that -- your time may come sooner than you think as people are absolutly moving away from the dominance method(and pretty quickly i might add). Love your vids-thx! :)

  • @kikopup Zak George suprisingly doesn't agree with the "dominance" theory either. Caesar Milan I can't say the same for. Haha. Love your videos! I really needed this one!

  • @Sunysunshineface Did you ask him personally? maybe hes changing his ways... ? or making up some other theory of his own that is base on punishment? but I wont believe it until he stops grabbing dogs by their necks and shaking them. I have not looked at any of his videos since his 'how to teach a stay' video... but since his video is still on youtube, he must still believe in that form of training...

  • what a beautiful dog! And you show very nicely how fast dogs learn with this method :)

  • very informative! Thanks for sharing!

    Great video 5*

  • Great video with lots of information Emily! Very well edited, and very helpful just in general to anyone! :)

  • 5 stars emily!

  • Wonderful helpful video for the many, many people who do not understand classical conditioning or how to use it! Awesome! 5*

  • so this is how you do it my dog hes so annoying whern he goes on walks becuse hes a big kelpie and he is aways barking ,whinning, winging its so annoying so we put a choke chain on him mis a bad thing to do or a good thing sorry about the spelling im a kid

  • another great video; keep em coming :)

  • Thank you so much! This video is just what I need!

  • Yeah ... was a bit of a problem in Wiesbaden last weekend. She went bezerk, when we wenot into the ring for our DD number, but she did come back to me and we were able to do the number. At the end, she ran FULL SPEED 4-5 times around the inside of the ring. I think to burn off the tension. I put up a training film of the new routiine, that we'll be doing in WInterthur in February. Still got some work to do, but the audience in Wiesbaden did like it, even with a couple of mishaps.

  • This is a great video. The dog is beautiful. I need to try this with my dog sometime.

What I'd really like to see with barking is a dog who barks while loose in the yard or in the house. My dog always barks really loudly when people come to the door or sees someone on the street outside.

  • I love this video. We started doing this when our reactive BC pup was 4-5 months old. We left off doing it. Now she's 9 mths and 10 times worse than ever. As soon as I saw this vid I thought - that's it, we're going to crack this!!!!!! After 2 sessions she's improving. Thanks kikopup!!!!

  • Another winner! Thanks Emily

  • I LOVE this video :) Love all your "barking" videos, i hope you keep these coming!

  • Thank you very much. ^.^

My dogs are, to me, well-behaved, but my terrier mix gets agitated easily and I`ve been trying to get him to calm down when he sees dogs or goes into the car for quite some time.

  • Your welcome!

  • 1) Emily - funny enough, we just started doing this with Vela - she gets so excited when she sees other dogs. Just want to play, play play. Goal is to be able to pass another dog on the street.

    2) When using Firefox, download the Firefox plug-in (add-on) called Download Helper. Available for either Mac or Windows. It installs next to the URL field. WOrks like a charm for just about all browser viewable video content.

Thanks for your great videos. YOU ROCK!!!

  • Thanks! ! ! Good luck with Vela's playfulness!

  • great again!! thanks

  • so awesome! i was very frustrated because i didn't know what to do (everyone said to splash water on yank when dog barks...) instead i tried what would happen with the clicker (pretty much same as your method). we are seeing definately improvement :)

Emily you are my idol! :D

  • Is there anyway you can share this video with me so that I can show it offline? I would like to use it in a class of volunteers for a service dog organization and we don't have internet availability in that environment.

  • Sure. check your messages, Ill give you my email. There is a way to download youtube videos to your computer, but I have no idea how to do that. If you know a computer nerd. You totally have my permission :)

  • If you download the free version of RealPlayer, and use Internet Explorer, you can download YT videos. Once you download the free version, when you play a video on YT, just put the 'cursor' over the video and on the top right a prompt will come up to download. Click the prompt. Sometimes it works on Firefox, but always on Explorer.

  • thank you!

  • I love the idea of putting the treat on the ground! Never thought to do that. Can't wait to try that. Thanks

  • Thanks! It helps if you put the treat at your heel to reinforce the dog for being next to you, than out in front of you (teaching the dog to be in front of you)

  • If your dog is not treat or toy motivated, I would make sure you start out with a hungry dog. And make something really good. I use a turkey loaf, turkey - grated cheese - bread and just a tsp of garlic powder. Or whatever your dog really really likes. If he's hungry, he should eat. If you need to and he loses interest, keep the training times short but positive.

  • Great advice! ! !

    I will also add,

a lot of dogs in North America are over weight, which causes them to have little interest in training with food (they already are eating too much) putting the dog on a diet increases their interest in working for food, AND exercising more

  • Great demonstration of a stress-free, yank-free way to train a dog to be calm. Great work.

  • How do you do these methods with a dog who is not treat or toy motivated?

  • I would suggest using the dogs whole meals for training, and beginning training indoors or in distraction free environments. Don't deprive the dog of food, that is stressful- can actually make the dog go backwards in training. Simply make the dog work for their whole meal each day. This can build the reinforcement value of food. Try different foods. I had an owner swear their dog didnt work for any food, but we found out the dog would work for the owners TOAST in the morning like CRAZY!

  • Great techniques! I always enjoy your videos!

  • Thanks!

  • Thanks! I really needed this advice. I think I'm an "anxious" owner who freaks out when the dog starts to bark (but I'm getting better at it).

  • Remember its just a dog doing normal dog behavior. It's normal for dogs to bark, we actually bred it into wolves to bark when they see things out of the ordinary. Now we want them to not react... But yes, the best thing to remember at that moment is "my dog is normal"

  • OMG,this really helps.

thank you so much for making the vid.

  • I hope to make more videos on this topic, I think people should have this info for free! So many dogs need it!

  • u heard my voice from the ep1(or2).... xDDD

    Thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!

I thk you are teaching people more than teaching dog ..T_T

    you do a great job!!

  • what a beautiful dog, s/he did wonderful.

  • Is there something else you can do instead of click? Because clickers give me dystonia attacks.

    Thanks :)

  • silent dog whistle

  • I hadn't thought of that yet :D Thank you!! :)

  • or any sound that always sounds the same but doesnt bother you. Worse comes to worse, you could mark with the word "yes"

  • Comment removed

  • This is FABULOUS! How did you manage to cover in just over 5 minutes what it usually takes me a few hour-long sessions to teach? :)

  • without having to answer questions (hehe)

  • love it! make more video pls.

  • Great lesson, Emily. How do I give it five stars? I can't find the rating thing on the page.

  • left bottom of vid. Depends what browser your using though.

  • thx, i saw the stars posted but didn't realize that was where you rated.

  • thanks! :)

  • thx for the clip very helpful but i have a question my dog is 9months old he loves treat and i use positive training but on the street when i try to lure him with the treet he wont take it or even spit it,and keeps his focus on the stimuli,so what should i do?

  • Another great one... very objective and simple... thats the most important... congratulations...

  • Another great and informative video, Emily! Thanks for making it and keep them coming!

  • This is one of those videos Id like to keep handly cause it is great, such a nice job and of course very helpful, Romy is just learning this stuff!!! Thanks

  • Thank you for posting this VERY helpful video! Clicker training has helped Jake so much with his barking at other dogs, as well as some people. I can judge by Jake's body language when he is becoming stressed, and when to start clicking and treating him, the c/t gets him focused back on me. To help Jake succeed, I cross the street, or do whatever I can to keep a comfortable distance away from the other dog.

A GREAT book to read on aggressive dogs is "Click to Calm" by Emma Parsons.

  • 5* and a fav! This is such a helpful video for all people with reactive/fearful dogs and hyperactive ones too:)! I am glad to hear Jake is doing so well with his training too:)!

    Happy Clicking!

    Ashley & Kaine

  • This is one of my absolute favorite videos of yours! It is such an important subject matter! So many dogs have over arousal issues. :) Really AWESOME! Spirit looks amazing! What a great dog! 5*s and a FAVORITE!

  • Awesome Video!!! Spirit looks so amazing! He is doing so well! LOVE IT! 5*s and a favorite! Very educational as well!

  • Another great video, as always! 5*

  • wow its like you can read minds :P my dog a australian shepherd is now 6 months old and she is getting more protective and will bark at people(not during the day but usualy when its getting dark outside.) this video will help me a lot. thanks

  • Thanks Emily, just what I needed!! I decided to work on Berri walking on a loose leash before working on his barking at other dogs on the walk. It is quite funny to see now, he trots along and barks at other dogs on a loose leash now, I can see he really wants to tug on the lead but he is so good! Step two, working on the barking.

And what a gorgeous demo dog you were working with! I'd love to have your job :o)

  • I love your use of science in your dog training. It's very refreshing and unique.

  • Wonderful video, just like always! 5*s!

    Thanks for the tips!

  • i heart ur videos

  • Awesome, Emily. I love the scientific factors behind the reason why a dog reacts the way they do.. Makes so much sense! :) 5*s!

  • Fabulous video! I think I'll start the lunging-on-leash exercise with my dog this week!

  • Great video on reactivity. I love how you don't just tell people but SHOW them. Timing is 95% of your success.

Do you have any exercises along the same line for fence fighting? I usually let Desperado out back w/ my sister's golden when I'm at school and they are horrible fence fighters. The worst part is that now I can hardly use the back yard to play with him now because as soon as the other dogs come out he is gone.

  • Yeah, you can't really do any training because they are being reinforced when you are gone. I have had great success with clients by blocking the dogs view, as well as having a secondary fence at least 5-10 feet between the fence that the other dogs are behind. You can use counter conditioning, but you have to get past a certain level before you can leave the dog unattended to train themself

  • Hi Emily! Thanks for another great video (I emailed you about my aggressive & reactive boston). He was attacked by two dogs last year which led to his fear of other dogs. The tip about not giving treats when your dog looks at the treats... this is my problem!!!! I think my dog only follows or acknowledges me when he KNOWS I have treats on hand (after the first click & treat). Is there a way to ensure that he is heeling/paying attention to me and not just because he wants another treat?

  • yes, simple click when he is looking forwards naturally, THEN give the treat. Or if he is distracted by something that is the perfect opportunity to click and give him a treat.

  • I would like to know what to do when a dog's extremely dog aggressive. I have a 1 yr old standard poodle and he is uncontrollable when he sees other dogs. Ive tried the clicker and treats but he doesnt pay them any mind. On our runs its a little difficult to cross the street or turn the other way since we are going 5 miles around a park. There are many dogs along the way, which makes my run so stressful.

    Thanks!

  • Hopefully there is a behaviorist in your area. Aggression is caused by an abnormality in the brain due to a chemical imbalance. If its just reactivity, the best thing to do is give the dog a 8 day break from seeing any dogs- to let the stress hormones in the blood subside (constant stress can make the synapses in the brain more excitable meaning the dog will only get more reactive).

  • why are you running a "extremely dog aggressive" dog around a park with "many dogs along the way"?!? If your dog is not taking treats at that time then he is over stressed and over threshold. a stressed dog is not in the right mind to learn. Why don't you choose a new walking path for awhile so you can do the methods in this video when your dog is more likely to be successful. if your dog can't handle seeing a dog at 20ft, then work at 50ft! set you and your dog up for success.

  • Really great advice. :) But I have to say, it is really hard for people in the States to find places where one isn't surprised by other dogs out of the blue. A baseball field is great for exercise. :) Good luck to all with reactive dogs!

  • Go for your run alone, then take the dog to a base ball field to exercise while training. Its better to just concentrate on the problem with the dog walking calmly, sometimes running can increase reactivity. Its not so much clicker training as classical conditioning that WORKS :) which is scientifically proven to work on any animal when the timing is right, you can use it on any creature with a brain. The navy uses this method to get their animals reliable in all possibilities

  • Tip 6 i think is being sarcastic, right? lol.

    Very helpful for dog owners!

  • Not really. Actually Splash my border collie was attacked by a dog as a puppy and became extremely fearful and reactive towards other dogs. She would see them from miles away and become reactive. Now she loves other dogs. However, there were times a year ago where I was frustrated, Im only human, and sometimes I had to remind myself to just go home, instead of continue with my heart thumping in my chest. I am sure she could read my stress and frustration and it only made matters worse.

  • well your tip stated "take it out on your dog." Hmm...

  • Some people jerk their dog around when they get frustrated, it usually happens AFTER everything is over. In my case, just sighing or groaning could be highly punishing to Splash. And I can say that in the past I have groaned, or said something under my breath like "not again..." in a disheartened tone or even swearing at the owner of the loose lab under my breath doesn't help! ... It all just makes things worse... Splash can even tell when I am annoyed at myself.

  • I expect Yz thought you meant "Go home THEN take it out on your dog" rather than "Better to go home THAN take it out on your dog" :)

  • Yes, I believe when these stressful events occur, we get stressed along with the dog, and find it difficult to control OUR reactions. The more we practice, the less likely we are to lose our cool under pressure. So, the training benefits both dog and human.

  • I completely agree. I've had times where I have to say, "OK, I'm getting a little frustrated, that's enough for today." I understood what you meant. Sometimes if I'm just anxious about unrelated things, I have to remind myself to take some deep breaths and relax while walking my dog.
