@quorratheband nah doesnt matter too much as long as its not along the edge, its mostly for sound and putting a mic inside of your kick. mine are typically in the lower right 1/4 of the head

@csvictory12 it will give u more "thud" sound!!! just like if u stuck some pillows or somethin.. but more natural.. im gonna do it cause i dont like that bouncing sound of mine!!! altough.. i will let u put ur mic inside the drum thats good if ur recordin or somethin like that!

the only prob with sandpaper smoothing, is with a smooth edge, its more likely to tear.

yes it does change sound a little bit. the bass drum will have less ring to it, a little more thud to it and less over tones. if your going to use a porthole i would also recomend putting a pillow in the bass drum, not like a full size one although those do work but like a pillow you would put on the corner of a couch. that will also eliminate overtones and add more of a thud.
