I actually like the speed he takes it at... If you think about it the person singing the song is scared, very scared but wants to be brave and look after the person he loves. The speed helps express the anxiety being felt and, to me, feels more natural. He also plays with the tempo quite a lot which does aid the sincerity of the song.
