Your case clearly demonstrates that human stupidity has no end. I have been listening to Mozart's Requiem this morning. Apart from the fact that the best part is not by Mozart but by Süssmayer (the BENEDITUS), Michael Haydn's is a much more venturous work.
He's playing the incorrect notes at measure 14. Should be a d flat. He plays d natural and it sounds terrible. He does the same harmonically incorrect thing in the recap at measure 53 where he plays a g natural instead of a g flag. Either he has a terrible edition or he has terrible taste. His performance of Brahms Amajor Intermezzo is also eccentric and self indulgent.
@chouchamayo What credential you have to say this. I look on your profile, percusions and blues. You are not classical pianist. Then what give you any rigth to harsh comment?
@Santor6 - Not sure if you are really interested but here is my reply. Apparently there are different editions of this sonata. My edition has different accidentals are measures 14 and 53 and I happen to think that they are correct and that the edition Ivo is using is wrong.
As far as my credential. I am the reincarnation of Franz Lizst. So there!
@chouchamayo Just out of curiosity, what edition do you have? Also, is the bass on measure 14 also playing d flat? BTW it's not harmonically 'incorrect' to play d natural, since it spells a V7 chord (Bb - D - F - Ab) that resolves on Eb at measure 15. Not many things could be more harmonically orthodox than this!
@fishbonegroove - I don't know the edition since the music was copied from the library probably 30 years ago! The edition is probably German. My edition has an asterisk at measure 14 saying that the Artaria edition has a d natural there. My first exposure to this piece was a recording by Gilbert Kalish records. He plays the D flat.. At bar 14 the phrase starts in Ab toward a semi cadence on Eb at bar 20. The d nat at bar 14 comes too soon. It should not appear until bar 19. Make sense?
not here to rate composers but i must say with out a doubt this is as fine as anything Mozart or Beethoven wrote for the piano. it is for GOOD reason they call him papa Hyden
The discussion is absolutely vane and fruitless. Everyone has his preferences. Mozart music is good because it is mainly cantabile, sweet, easy for the listener and not unfrequently superficial.
Haydn's is angulous, hard, concise, and WITHOUT DOUBT more profound.

This is played almost 20 bpm slower than the last recording I heard of #42, 2d mvmt. Interesting when you stretch it out a bit.

I have a question. Was Haydn a more profound musician than Mozart?

Yes.

was H more profound musician than M? what kind of q and answer "yes" is that?
??
Verityseo 3 years ago 4
A sarcastic one.
Pogouldiwitz 3 years ago 2
@Verityseo I don't know the answer to that question. What is sure (for me anyway), is that i still prefer mozart's Adagios.

Not in the views of Haydn. Hayden was once quoted saying that he was astonished by the talents of Mozart and his genious.
Mozart was alive less than haydn and was able to write mass amounts of music that were good.

"Mozart was able to write mass amounts of music that were good."

he's kinda phoning it in. :(
And he's changing the notes!?! ("d"-flats to "d"s)
A brilliant pianist, though.
annamikme 4 years ago
lol, umm which "d" flat would that be?
KennYWooD2 3 years ago
ah, you're right! It's just a different edition from the one i use. "The Artaria edition uses a 'natural' here" - around 1:15.
