You are right Bluehawk2008, but premier and his irish-quebecois heritage grew up in a time of anglo-quebecer dominance (he grew up during the transition, but previous generations did)...and because of that Gaelic/celtic spelling of the names sometimes anglicized, and in his case it became french. The Bloc love to call him John!

Prime Minister Louis St.Laurent who was also Irish-Quebecois also had a slight irish brogue when speaking english...a testament to how some linguistic roots were kept.

It was during the Potato Famine... During the mid-nineteenth century in Ireland, there was a strain of virus that made most of the potatoes go bad. Since people in Ireland practically lived off of potatoes at that time, many had to emigrate across the ocean to the Americas which is why so many people you know have Irish last names.
