This march reminds me of my days in the Bayonne, NJ Post 19 American Legion marching band. “Professor” Vicedomini who taught instrumental music in the Bayonne, NJ schools, recruited me and many other school age children into the band. In fact, we comprised most of the band, with the exception of a few vets. When we found out that Post 19 was being paid to march, and the money was being kept by the vets without a thought of sharing it with the band membership, that was the end of the band.
The Goldman Band was featured in New York City's Central Park, Lewisohn Stadium at City College and Prospect Park (Brooklyn). Edwin Franko Goldman was the band's founder and Richard Franko Goldman took over in the 1950's. The free Goldman Band Concerts were sponsored by Guggenheim family.
we are playing this in band and we are singing the trio and then playing it on kazoo! i'm so mad tho cuz i play bassoon, therefore i have to play the trio both time.. no kazoo for me :(
@IrukaLuv101 yeah we do too... but to make it better, all of the tubas except one sing with all our might and we recorded a cd, and you can only hear us xP
It is always refreshing to hear an American march that isn't by Sousa. He wrote so many marches, and so most of them sound like variations of the same march.
Sousa did have some more unique marches, such as "Nobles in the Mystic Shrine," "Powhatan's Daughter," and "The White Rose," but many more of them are just too predictable, and he wrote hundreds.
I'm sure that there is some info about him on Wikipedia, but all I know about his is he wrote a few more marches. Tow of the more notable ones would be Jubilee which I only have a score but no parts to, tis a really good march, and Chimes of Liberty which is still in print and is fun to play but has an obnoxious piccolo obligato that reminds me of the stars n stripes forever. Goldman did a ton of method books but are a bit hard to locate. I believe he my have been a part of Sous's Band.
In 1978 I played in a band made up of college and high school seniors that toured europe and we played this song. While in germany during the whistling the church bells started to ring and drowned us out. It brought back good memories. Great Job!

On a peaceful summer evening when the sun has set
And the cares of the day linger yet,
Don't be sad and don't be tired, there's a place to go
Where there's rest brought by sweet music's flow.
'Neath the trees with shadows dark,
The starry sky above,
There is calm, there is peace, there is love.
There's forgetting care and trouble,
All may claim a share
Of joy, hope, and courage rare.

Brought back memories from Jr. High. We (or should I say woodwinds) sung the 1st time, then whistled the 2nd time. Fun march.

I used to hear this piece played by the son of the composer, Richard Franko Goldman on the mall in Central Park, New York City.

I've played this march and have heard it many times, but I don't recall any lyrics to it other than "La-La-La-La." Where did your lyrics come from?
There should be more fun band concerts like this instead of the formal "wind ensemble" concerts where they take a long time between pieces.

I'd like to disagree. I've heard so many of King's marches, I'd die to play something by Sousa.
