The second and third exhaust ports in each side are siamesed. The valve layout on each side is E-I-I-E-E-I-I-E so if you think about it it's impossible to put 2 ports between the second cylinders due to the valves and ports being in the block. If you look at a Lincoln flathead V-12, you'll see it has 4 ports on each side to serve 6 cylinders. It wprks.
Thanks, I had the car with the Flathead for 5 years and that was enough, looked beautiful and the engine itself ran fine until it sprang a ring leak in two of the cylinders, bringing one to 15lbs and the other to like 35lbs, instead of going the re build route I sold off all the parts of the engine, OD tranny, and replaced it with a sbc and th350 , It runs good, faster and over the long run, more reliable on long drives. The automatic tranny helps sitting in stop and go traffic.
Oh I wish I would have been able to keep the flathead, but when I needed to rebuild it, The price was way out of my price range. I had added an OD 3 speed tranny and that was too much torque for the old V8, One piston checked out at 15 lbs and the other at 35lbs, the rest were fine, the engine was suffering with two cylinders limping, and the fumes inside the car were bad. All the flathead parts were sold to other Flathead lovers, The block is being rebuild by the new owner
Osvaldosilvera, I'm a fellow '50 shoebox Ford guy with an 8BA too. I have offy heads, but I love your cast iron ones and the fact that you are running with a mechanical fuel pump too. Does the elec fan keep the heat down? I am considering one myself.
@Osvaldosilvera the middle ports are shared w/ one exhaust "tube." A Lot of Flathead books and hot rodders have said they get better performance via the use of custom diverters that can be added. I run mine stock.
I did better than that. I stopped driving it and sold off most of the engine parts after a cylinder test showed two cylinders had less than great pressure, so I'll be putting in a newer drivetrain in the next couple of months.
Yes, The Alt has been sold and shipped, as has the stainless rad hoses and the Powermaster XS flathead starter. The entire engine, tranny is being sold by the part to make way for a newer engine/auto tranny combo.
great video!! my son and i are restoring/rodding a '53 customline. your motor is right down our alley as to what we want our flatty to look like. thanks. it's always kool to know that there are "others" in this world who know the truth. God drives a american v-8 and smokes a fine cigar. amen
Dakota Digital makes it specifically for the 1951 dash, and they also make them for the 49 and 50 dash size also. I still need to install the right fuel sender in a 12 volt model for the gas to work right.
Manifold is an old unit from edelbrock and the holley used to be a big 600 but that was too much for the little engine, so I went with the smaller 390cfm holley and it works Much Much better
I got it in Dec 06 and have re wired it, added disk brakes, new fuel pump and tank, new oil pump, cleaned out the sludge from the motor, made it 12 volt negative ground, changed the oil filter system, added interior courtesy lights, and the pillar lights, halogen headlights, turnsignals, rear bumper, new rims and tires, new headers and exhaust, just trying to make is a safe and reliable driver, next up is the overdrive transmission., But still 3 on the tree though. Thanks for the comments.
A combination of a cell phone microphone and the engine was revving quite high that day when I taped this video.

These engines are not much on horsepower because of the limited compression, but they can produce monstrous torque.

drop dead amazing - nice work....who wants to look at another 350 chebby - a flathead is cooler than the other side of the pillow....

It's all about reliability, not so much with the gauges but the alternator sure is easier to replace anywhere in the US than a generator.

where did you get that guage?

wow!!! nice work there!!! I have a question, why there is always 4 cylinders on each side but only 3 tube on the manifold on those flathead?
burncy 1 year ago
That I actually have no idea!, I'll have to research. Good question since the later model engines usually have one exhaust port per cylinder.

where did you get the gage cluster?
chaosad09 1 year ago
Dakota Digital sells it. This car has a dash from a 1951 model, but Dakota has both the 49/50 model and the 1951 model clusters.

with the 600, did it bog down at low revs and guzzle fuel?

it did bog down, and yes it used up a bunch of fuel before, Now it's suprisingly good on fuel.

This car must be worth thousands.
Must have taken ages to build.

Is that a 4 barrel holley?
Ive never seen one of those on a flathead, did u buy or fabricate the manifold?
tpvalley 3 years ago
Yep, a Holley 4 barrel 390 cfm, the manifold is an original edelbrock 4 barrel for a flathead.

maybe!
