• George Martin, Mat's internationally aclaimed producer (also the Beatles') had this to say re Mat." Mat had the rare gift of getting to the heart of the lyric and with his supurb voice, delivering it in such a way that it became a personal message to the audience. This showed in his personal life too. Always outward looking, he had a terrific sense of humour and seemed to find only the best in people. Mat will sing on and I shall always hear him. "' EMI record cov. Mat Will sing Forever.
When Matt took over in Las Vegas from Frank Sinatra, it was on his recommendation, and when Frank heard that Matt Monroe was ill, he sent him a telegram saying (Get Well Soon Matt, From one boy singer to another) They don;t come any greater than that, both singers had the greatest respect for each other.
Matt loved his home more than the U.S.A. ask his wife Television statement, like Frank Sinatra & Matt Monroe will be with us forever.
As a Monro fan, to me he was the greatest of the crooners, but equally were Sinatra, Damone, Vale,Bennett, Como, Williams and the many other great male voices, when we had real music. Let's just give them the kudos they ALL deserve without trying to compare them to one another. They were all individuals and unique performers, of which, unfortunately we will never see the likes of again.
Around 1953-54 i was singing with a band in the air force stationed in england they were chosen to play for eddie fisher when he toured england we were at burtonwood afb in england and there was another singer the used instead of me at the time i dodnt know him but during the performance i was in the wings backstage watching this singer perform with the spotlight on him
and i was really envious ( not angry) I know now that was matt monroe.
Frank admired both Vic Damone and Matt Monro for their "pipes." He opined that nobody could hold a note like Matt. I agree with an earlier post that you need to listen to Frank's voice in the 40's and 50's to understand how he became so huge. Matt really came along too late for their type of music...as his wife said, he would also have been better served to stay in the States after Capitol brought him over to replace Nat and Frank in the mid-60's.
I too am a fan of both singers and still crooning myself at 75. To me Matt Monro had the most perfect voice one could ever have. Diction, crystal clear voice. Also of course Vic Damone was the same with a brilliant Microphone tecnique. They were all great singers and there is nobody around today to touch them. I had the pleasure of seeing both Matt and Vic Damone many years ago and I can still remember them. Long live their memories.
Frank Sinatra was a superb singer and is internationally known. However, Matt Monro is an exceptional singer way above Frank Sinatra. It is a pity he died so young that a lot of people got to know him late. By this I mean I come from Africa, I am very fond of classical music and I never heard of Matt until I came to the USA. For me, Matt is the real Crooner in music. Long live his beautiful music!!!
Is'nt it wonderful that we can still enjoy these beautiful love songs long after Matt left us. He had an unforgettable voice. Thanks to who ever posted it. I greatly enjoyed hearing it.
I have been a huge fan of Frank Sinatra for almost the whole of my life but I truly believe that noone came close to the total perfection that was the voice of Matt Monro. He treated every song he sang with the utmost respect and was truly incomparable.A great, great singer.
@RockPicard Listen again and notice how much Vic's 1966 interpretation owes Sinatra's 1963. Particularly the clipped 'How you'll LOOK...in the glow of evening.' Also notice that in the reprise, Vic does not hit that final 'I will LOVE being loved by you.' with the same high note that Frank does. Otherwise, I agree Frank's voice has a 'strident' sound as Nelson Riddle said. It's impossible not to admire Vic's voice if you're a Sinatra fan as Vic was himself.
@1915fas Thank's for answering!!!! They both have their own style , I love them both but to me Matt Monro has a better control with his voice than Frank Sinatra. I do sing myself !!! Do you sing???? By the way where do you live in Canada???? Thank's again. Rock from Montreal.
@RockPicard . Munro had a different type of voice than Sinatra but was obviously influenced by him. He never caught on in the US. To hear Sinatra at his clearest listen to his 40s recordings for the smooth but masculine Sinatra crooner turned balladeer. Beyond talent it is the power of his personality and conviction about his own original interpretation. The tough guy image bolstered his later rougher voice to create an authentic, legendary persona of a man's man who's loved, lost and comeback.
This is one of the most beautiful songs ever written. I have never understood for the life of me why the movie of "The King and I" cut the song. Beautiful recording by Matt Monro. Thank you for posting.
Quote;- "Sinatra or Matt Munro? Dumb comparison. Frank would have tried to swing this tune."
You obviously are not familiar with Sinatras early career,,,he was a crooner, he only "swung" when the musical fashion went that way, his career was dead until that change.
@tonywsmith2 Listen to Sinatra's version; he doesn't swing it at all. It was recorded in 1963 with the arrangement by Nelson Riddle. It was every bit as symphonic as this one.
@vidnut67 Thanks for pointing that out. I hate the way people need to "protect" great singers by slamming their peers. There's room for Munro AND Sinatra. At least, in my music collection. It's like saying Bach is "better" than Beethoven. You CAN have them both, after all.
I am shocked Matt Monro thought of himself as a second rate singer. I am from the United States, and I have always felt Matt was one of the finest singers ever. How I wish he would have been with us longer. I was so sad to hear he passed away. To think of all the great songs he would have continued to record.
Fantastic song / voice / arrangement. Can't split this and Sinatra's version--on all counts.

He sang great, but in my opinion its not fair too say he was better than Nat King Cole.Just listen too his songs Mona Lisa, Unforgettable etc

Matts only problem was his inherent English shyness perhaps...a little more emotion would have made him into a Tony Bennett or Sinatra...

He actually died a relatively young man.
Just couldn't seem to get past Mr. Booze.
Still, all in all, one of the great crooners of all time. Up there with Como, Martin & Sinatra.
