I have holidayed al over Spain and never saw so many strays and cats as in the places I have stayed on Greek islands. I spent a fortune paying local animal protectors to help these poor animals, dumped by selfish, ignorant Greeks who don't know the 1st thing about caring for a companion animal. The Greeks that do care are persecuted and often can only go out at night to feed the hungry strays. I have many Greek friends who care so I know. I will NEVER go to Greece again.

We are in constant communication with the shelter in Skiathos and know exactly what is it like on the island and this video is not just about Skiathos. I acctually just cried my eyes out, I go to Greece every year , but I had no idea animals were poisoned. I have friends in Greece who have pets, what if they got accidently poisoned!
You are not alone, and the first and last time I went to Greece was October time which is the recognised start of the end of tourist season poisoning. In the summer it is crowded and tourists, it seems, are too busy to notice the hundreds of chained barrel dogs left a lot of the time without food or water, outside these main resorts; the skinny cats manage to survive on tourists scraps but come winter, they are doomed.
I realize that the problem of strays, especially on an island, requires some hard decisions. However, there are humane ways of reducing the stray population without resorting to such cruelty. Turkey, for example, sterilizes strays, gives them shots and tags them. This practice is dangerous for children and the environment..
Maybe the greeks would stop this cruel way of dealing with strays if we stopped going there on our holidays ? Ive just returned from Rhodes last week it will be the last time i visit any of the greek resorts until there is any improvement !!

A man I met 18 years ago lived in Greece for 4 years. He's a Canadian who loved that country and used to feed the "roof rabbits" from the windows of his rental home. One day 80 cats who trusted and loved him came to his apartment and died in his home, poisoned. He is forever altered and had to come back to Canada. HOW do we begin? It's a long-standing deficiency in the mindset of these "people."
Thats dreadful & I wonder if this is ever going to stop,probably not in my lifetime. 80 animals is horrific Last month a lady in Salamina(island close to Athens)was confronted with 24 dying dogs from poison and she was only able to save 6 with atropine injections&they are still under vet care,they were all in one back yard, cared for.Salamina is notorious for being a dumping ground of unwanted pets(see the slideshow giving info about the 4000 strays there & email addresses to complain).Thanks.

So many people dont know this goes on because they visit in the summer when there are crowds of tourists, perhaps a few cats around living on scraps. It is when you drive outside of towns you see the many dogs chained to barrels left with hardly enough food /water, sometimes nothing, recent example Lardos,Rhodes dogs who died still chained(shown in"Greek Tragedy"slideshow).Poisoning starts Oct/Nov after the tourists have gone up until early May. Some use poison in the summer.
The mayors are known to give instructions for poison to be laid as well (example Ioannina) & council workers are told to go around before 5 am to collect bodies before they are noticed. Those sub-humans who abuse, sometimes use crushed glass hidden in meat or fish instead of poison, so then there is no hope of them surviving.

I am very sorry to hear that. I hope it didnt die. Some Greek friends I have always carry an antidote with them when they take their dogs for walks and one girl carries it in her bag anyway in case she comes across a stray that has eaten poison.

I have holidayed al over Spain and never saw so many strays and cats as in the places I have stayed on Greek islands. I spent a fortune paying local animal protectors to help these poor animals, dumped by selfish, ignorant Greeks who don't know the 1st thing about caring for a companion animal. The Greeks that do care are persecuted and often can only go out at night to feed the hungry strays. I have many Greek friends who care so I know. I will NEVER go to Greece again.

It happens that i am from skiathos, i adore the animals as most of Skiathians and Greeks, and also in skiathos there is a very organised dog settler for the dogs that dont have an owner. It is easy to show the above cruel photos and to try to characterise a whole nation but dont you think that you should use another way to do your propaganda?

I am sorry to say that it is you that is not in touch with reality. We are in constant communication with the shelter in Skiathos and know exactly what is it like on the island and this video is not just about Skiathos. The abuse and poisoning is ALL over Greece and we are now in the midst of the "end of tourist season poisoning". You only need to Google "greek animal abuse" or look here on youtube. You may be animal lover but you certainly sound like a typical greek, ie in denial!

It is not easy, as you say, to show cruel photos and you suggest "another way to do your propaganda". So, bearing in mind that Greece has the worst animal abuse record, per capita, in the EU, how else would you suggest that we inform people. The previous Greek Govt were not interested and the new Pasok, so far havent shown much concern either.

Dear all, please think, the animals you see and adore every summer are the ones we love and taking care the whole year. Are the animals we feed, inject, protect so they will survive the cold, rainy and some times snowing winter so they will be healthy and playful in the summer.

You are not alone, and the first and last time I went to Greece was October time which is the recognised start of the end of tourist season poisoning. In the summer it is crowded and tourists, it seems, are too busy to notice the hundreds of chained barrel dogs left a lot of the time without food or water, outside these main resorts; the skinny cats manage to survive on tourists scraps but come winter, they are doomed.

I realize that the problem of strays, especially on an island, requires some hard decisions. However, there are humane ways of reducing the stray population without resorting to such cruelty. Turkey, for example, sterilizes strays, gives them shots and tags them. This practice is dangerous for children and the environment..

A man I met 18 years ago lived in Greece for 4 years. He's a Canadian who loved that country and used to feed the "roof rabbits" from the windows of his rental home. One day 80 cats who trusted and loved him came to his apartment and died in his home, poisoned. He is forever altered and had to come back to Canada. HOW do we begin? It's a long-standing deficiency in the mindset of these "people."

Thats dreadful & I wonder if this is ever going to stop,probably not in my lifetime. 80 animals is horrific Last month a lady in Salamina(island close to Athens)was confronted with 24 dying dogs from poison and she was only able to save 6 with atropine injections&they are still under vet care,they were all in one back yard, cared for.Salamina is notorious for being a dumping ground of unwanted pets(see the slideshow giving info about the 4000 strays there & email addresses to complain).Thanks.

I knew that nonhuman animals in general are not treated very well, as part of the culture there, but I didn't know about the poisonings.
If I ever go back I will certainly look into it first, and do a LOT of research before going.

So many people dont know this goes on because they visit in the summer when there are crowds of tourists, perhaps a few cats around living on scraps. It is when you drive outside of towns you see the many dogs chained to barrels left with hardly enough food /water, sometimes nothing, recent example Lardos,Rhodes dogs who died still chained(shown in"Greek Tragedy"slideshow).Poisoning starts Oct/Nov after the tourists have gone up until early May. Some use poison in the summer.

The mayors are known to give instructions for poison to be laid as well (example Ioannina) & council workers are told to go around before 5 am to collect bodies before they are noticed. Those sub-humans who abuse, sometimes use crushed glass hidden in meat or fish instead of poison, so then there is no hope of them surviving.
