If "um" always takes the accusative case, I would think that: "sie blieben stehen, um ein Taxi zu winken" was correct, but I'm sitting with a book that says "sie blieben stehen, um einem Taxi zu winken" is the right answer. Does "zu" way stronger than "um" here, or is my wrong?..
@Icominghome: entlang is not a two-way preposition my friend.
But: on the other hand wider rules the dativ, not the accusative. The exhaustive list of prepositions ruling the accusative is: durch, fuer, bis, gegen, ohne, um, entlang, pro, per und je.
Herr Wallace, Entlang is a two way preposition. it can take both dative and accusative. Have u heard of "entlang der Linie"? that is dative right there!
@lcominghome I am sorry my friend, but as a Dutch teacher of the German language I can assure you that entlang rules the accusative (like in Latin all directions take the fourth declination). In any case, he forgot about wider, that rules the dativ...
@fravatel I think you should look for entlang on dict.tu-chemnitz(dot)de , I don't blame with the other cases for entlang is rarely used that even the Native Germans also don't know it.
That's difficult, because Women's lib changed a lot. I am a man myself, so may I suggest you ask a German woman about that. - My personal opinion is that a woman should be called "Frau" at all times, and not just by her last name, like "Merkel held a press conference" (our lady chancellor). I would prefer "Frau Merkel held a press conference", and also "I am Frau Merkel" and not "My name is Merkel", but some women disagree.
@chargonchar Einige bayrische Wörter sind eingedeutscht worden. Dazu gehört auch der Schmarrn. Wegezoll = Maut, Busserl usw. Sie stehen auch im Duden! Das Wort pingelig gibt es auch, welches dem fälischen Dialekt entlehnt wurde.
yes, the accusitive is the "direct object" dative case is the "indirect object" nominative is the "subject of the sentence" and the genitive case are the "possesives"
@23gman567 Not always (in dativ/e accusative). There are vercbs with dativ and bverbs with accusative, for example: "gratulieren" goes with dativ always. You say: "Ich gratuliere dir."
"dir" (you in English, te in Spanish) is the direct object but is in dative.

you dont say "Guten Tag, Herr Wall ist hier" its a mixture and doesnt fit
"Guten Tag, Ich bin Herr Wall" is more serious/ sounds not that wierd
if you want to say it more "funky" you can say
"Hallo, Ich bins Herr Wall" (i think that is what you intended to say)
Fazzil 3 years ago
I think his name is Herr Wallace.
So he's saying "Guten Tag, Herr Wallace hier"
purplemenace 2 years ago 4
@purplemenace
Problem is, in German you don't say "Herr" to yourself! Only to other people.
"I am Herr Wallace" is wrong. "My name is Wallace" is right.
"Ich bin Herr Wallace" ist falsch, denn "Herr" sagt man nur zu anderen. Niemals zu sich selbst.

This list is not complete.
"in" for example stands also with a noun in accusative form in some case
(in das Haus - into the house (accusative), BUT in dem Haus - in the house (dative))
